Not that I think it's impossible, but I think it's much more likely that Pouliot starts the season in the top-6 than he does rotating in and out of the lineup.

I agree. I honestly didn't mean to include him in that group, but for whatever reason I did. Multi-tasking mishap.

Hey Rangers fans,

I know some Canucks fans have probably already asked you this but I've been inactive here during the summer so I personally haven't read any discussion about it. Just wanted to ask what you think of Vigneault so far. How is his training camp? Are there any players you think he'll have a positive impact on? Any players he might not be so good for?

Thanks, and good luck to you and your team in this coming season!

That's hard to answer. We haven't seen enough yet to really judge the impact he'll have on the team. Boyle, Zucc, and Kreider have looked solid during training camp. If he can get all 3 of them going, it'll be a huge improvement for us. I like that he's a players coach, he'll let a lot of the players do the talking without singling out any players who may not be playing at 100% expected.

He might not be the best coach for somebody like Girardi. (although that really could go either way) Pinching and trying to provide more offense may hurt his overall performance.

So far, he's been able to endear himself to the players with his "clean slate" campaign. Everyone seems pretty upbeat, and he's handled the media extremely well. Lots of positive signs for different players at camp, but it's too early to say who is benefiting from AV as a coach and who isn't.

First day of camp, he handed out shirts that said 'Clean slate. grab it.' and has also been preaching that 'talent has no age.
Both of which have garnered a very positive reaction from fans and players.
He's giving a lot of young guys a chance (especially Kreider, playing him with Nash), and trying to get Richards back to being Richards (putting him with Nash and Kreider).

Thanks for the responses.

The man is a darn good coach. He just got stale here in Vancouver. I imagine you guys feel the same about Torts.

Some of us do.

:naughty:

But, to answer the question, I'm pretty happy with him so far, though it's still very early to make any real judgement. He reminds me of Torts in a way, though on the opposite end of the spectrum. Torts knew who would react to his tough love approach well and who to back off and let do their own thing. Similarly, it seems like AV knows who will react to his buddy/coach approach and who may not. For example, it looks like he's committed to seeing if Kreider can lose a top 6 spot rather than gain one, which is the complete opposite of Torts' approach. Frankly, I like the idea of a skater, any skater, starting at the bottom and working to get to the top 6, but CK is a big prospect for the club, and I'll gladly accept any approach that gets him going without hurting the rest of the team. I also like the statement that "talent has no age," but it's one thing to say it and it's another to act that way. We'll see how that plays out.

Torts is a pretty good coach but I imagine much easier to deal with when things are going well. He's very intense and it may seem like he's being too hard on his players, but he genuinely wants them to succeed and play their best and wants to help them do that. He's just very demanding.

The test in Vancouver will be whether he can move beyond the defensively oriented system he had in place with the Rangers and find a way to let his offensive players play. I think he got too many of the Rangers players worried about making mistakes or going against the plan and they would often play too tentative

As far as addressing the nucks fan, the moment of truth as to whether Torts is a product of Henrik Lundqvist will be revealed soon, unless Luongo puts up top 5 numbers.

Kevin's not the kind of guy to tease bull**** news. Could be a Stepan re-sign?

In all reality, it's probably bull**** news that only has to do with BSB, but still worth bringing up I'd say.

Lundqvist extension?

Is there ever an example in the history league where a coach wasn't a product of his best player?

I'm confused.

The man is a darn good coach. He just got stale here in Vancouver. I imagine you guys feel the same about Torts.

To summerize this, many felt that Torts had an overrated roster to work with and basically as many felt that Torts had failed to adopt to the post-lockout game meaning that he especially put to much focus on getting the puck safely through the neutral zone and behind the hash marks, before he let his players be creative wtih the puck. Its safe to say that during his stint here we were slaughtered by good teams playing well while we could eat up any team that failed to get the job done. Its a fact that we fundamentally played a diffrent style than any of the successful teams in this league.

One big problem was that when we faced teams that did the right things, we got nothing -- and nothing is definitey the right word -- going. We didn't get out of our end. Got three shots on net for a period. Etc. In this perspective, coaching a team with at least one self supportive line, the Sedins, that is among the best in the world, will definitely help him. Torts will more or less be a 2nd - 4th line coach in Van, while the 1st takes care of it self and I would be much more comfortable with him in that role than I was with him in NY.

Lastly, and here I only speak for my self, I had a huge problem with how he coached our transition game, but in NY a lot was also made about how he handled players and how he threated media. I think he is an excellent motivator and knows what it takes to win. He takes pressure from the players, he creates that special atmosphere that history has proven can be succesful in this league. I think he did a great job bringing kids in at the right pace etc. There is alot of things to like about Torts too.

As far as addressing the nucks fan, the moment of truth as to whether Torts is a product of Henrik Lundqvist will be revealed soon, unless Luongo puts up top 5 numbers.

Hank or no Hank, we were sub-par offensively, had no PP, had regular massive breakdowns defensively, our players sacrifized themselves tremendously with shorter career as a direct result and we still lacked in several other areas in NY under Torts.

We put the best goalie we can get our hands on between the pipes. We ice the best D's we possibly can on a nightly basis. We litterary travel the world and turn every stone to ice the best forwards, the best team. The bottom line is that it got to a point where it was hard to argue just why exactly Torts should be the person coaching his team. I mean, look at any of the games we played against say -- just for example -- Ottawa or the Islanders last season, and review what each team were doing well and the areas each teams were struggling in etc. Its not like you go Ott/NYI are really good at 1-3 and NYR are really good at 1-3. Instead you would go OTT/NYI are really good at 1-3 while NYR really are sacrifizing themselves to get into shooting lanes and Hank is playing well, but they are still struggling in almost every area.

Of course, but speaking strictly to Torts's defensive style, if he had a lesser goalie, his system might have collapsed without Henrik's ability to keep us in the game time and time again and win those "grinding games"

A cup is a cup. Coach Q has some of the best players in the world on his team.. doesn't mean you discredit him for his two cups.

I was joking when I said that I think.

No one is discrediting Stanley Cups. PIM has a tendency to be dramatic and over infer. How in the world does it make sense that I was implying Torts's cup in Tampa should be discredited because of Henrik who wasn't even in the league then? I was clearly referencing his tenure in New York where he slowly adapted to become a very different coach.

Truth is though, playing his "safe" style of game, with a goalie like Henrik who's not prone to mistakes, our game can be as good as our defense. Without Henrik, even a really strong night of defense and offense can be in vain. With Henrik in net and playing Torts's hockey, our only goal and worry is to score goals. It would be a lot different if we had an average goalie in net. The amount of close games under Torts style can easily go the other way. The way we collapsed and got hemmed in at stretches and during the playoffs was like signing a death warrant except Henrik was great. Realistically, Torts's philosophy and style of hockey would not have been able to receive a passing grade with an inferior goalie. Granted, he would have adjusted if he didn't have a strong goaltender. Given the lack of offensive talent during his first few years and the depth of defense that stepped up, he made the best out of our team. But as far as the style he's bringing to the Canucks (the second team in the post lockout era and the first team he will be implementing his current style of hockey that doesn't have a goalie who blows only a game out of 25-30 he plays), it'll be interesting to see if his style of play will have similar success with a great but not elite goalie.

ALong the lines of what Ola said, we have two things going for us then: our defense and our goalie. In fact, we had the best goalie (in the past two and most reflective seasons of Torts hockey), and a top 5 or top 3 defense. The way our forwards played helped and the way our defense played was key. Those are to Torts's credit. Without Henrik though, I think we would have been a 1st round exit in both of the past seasons.

Thus, rounding back to my point that the success and effectiveness of Tortorella hockey as deemed and recognized by a lot of fans and hockey people might be given a second glance as the year in Vancouver unfolds.

It never ceases to amaze me how reality gets lost in Torts conversations. The Rangers just simply do not have many players, especially forwards, capable of making creative plays in critical areas of the ice. Mr. Safe is Death transformed into a safe style leaning on his all-world goalie. Tortorella didn't place his imprint on the roster - it was actually the other way around.

Vigneault got a cold dose of reality last night.

I wouldn't go that far after one pre-season game, but I'm sure that dose is right around the corner.
