2013-2014 Schedule Released (Schedule/Divisions/Realignment Discussion)

The Rangers have the easiest schedule in the NHL

The cushiest schedule by far goes to the New York Rangers, who not only travel the least but also have very few (13) back-to-back sets of games. So quit your complaining, Larry Brooks, the Blueshirts actually traveled further in many previous seasons, thanks in part to those European openers in which the Rangers were regular participants.

Torts has 48,510 miles and 17 back to backs.
 
I would have gone with a Southern division.


South- Tampa, Florida, Dallas, Carolina, Nashville, St. Louis, Colorado.

Western- PHO, Anaheim, LA, San Jose, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Calgary, Oilers

North- Rangers, Devils, Isles, Sabres, Leafs, Habs, Senators, Bruins.

Great Lakes- Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington

Colorado with Florida? Winnipeg with Phoenix/California? That's even worse than the current proposals and would have simply shifted the horrible travel Dallas/Minny had to Colorado and Winnipeg.

When I draw it up, it looks the most reasonable travel-wise for most teams. Colorado has a bad go of it no matter what.
 
Maybe this has been asked already, but it appears that the home opener is being carried by NBCSN. Is it an exclusive of theirs? If so, the opening ceremonies may not be televised. That would be a real shame.
 
I think they did a fine job with the alignment of the divisions. I might have swapped Detroit and Columbus. CBJ and some of those "Atlantic" teams actually have a pretty decent rivalry going. Especially CBJ and Buffalo, those games always seem to be very intense for what was an inter-conference rivalry.

The main issue is with the names, and solely with the names.

I'll never get over it. Metropolitan? Really? We're going to be hanging banners that say "Metropolitan division champions?" What about the new fan that comes to the game and sees that the Rangers were the Atlantic Division champions in 2011-2012?

I don't know. I don't know what was happening in that board room when somebody said, "hey! Let's make Detroit part of the Atlantic division, and rename the other division Metropolitan!" And people in that room got behind it? Who are these people.

The truth is... it has been much (MUCH) worse in the past. http://www.nhl.com/history/fstand70s.html (with regard to team placement, that is.)

I know, which is why I think they did a pretty good job this time around :)

And when the NHL ultimately (and unfortunately) expands, it's a good setup to place a team in Seattle. Thing is, where do they put the 32nd team? Quebec? Who moves back to the West? Detroit?

OKC? Kansas City? Other places that don't make as much sense as Quebec? :naughty:

Portland, OR is looking like they might make a strong bid for a team pretty soon. Simultaneously expanding to Portland and Seattle would be great.

Also, as much as I'd hate losing the rivals and I don't think it's likely, the Devils moving to Quebec would be great for alignment. Swap them and Columbus for the two Florida teams.

I really like the name of our new division, but I really don't get why you would call the other division the Atlantic.

Not really. The 1, 2, 7, and 8 seeds still basically operate in the old system. It's really only if the Rangers/Flyers take 2nd/3rd.

And I don't care about the strength of the schedule. I care about good games being gutted so Arizonians can have Crosby come over to play.

You're wrong, but you're just being a fanboy so there's no point arguing with you. You only care about your entertainment and not the league as a whole.
 
I seriously need to reiterate this. The league renaming this "division" the Metropolitan Division is probably the worst thing I have seen from the NHL (besides the multiple lock-outs) since I started watching. I can't think of something more ridiculous.

You've got to think outside the box. The EPL is the "Barclays Premier League"

If they had named it the "Budweiser" Division, it would be more ridiculous, though not unprecedented.
