Greene will leave over Summer and hopefully so will Mitchell.

Although Greene has pretty much been inactive over the past two seasons, that's still a couple of big holes to fill on the blueline.

That would also leave Doughty, Muzzin, Voynov, Regehr and Martinez as the returning dmen, that's two righty and three lefty dmen. It seems likely that McNabb may be with the Kings next season but I think they'll ease him in as the #7 guy and that the team may look to sign a veteran guy to play in the top 4.

I'm not convinced that Muzzin is a good fit for Doughty and if Muzzin isn't playing with Doughty, where does he fit on the blueline?

I'd like to see Alec Martinez get a chance along side Doughty next season. I mean the Kings would spend no time in their own zone with those two on the back end.

Also, what's the future for Bodnarchuk? Lots of talk about Gravel, McNabb, and Forbort, but nothing about Bodnarchuk.

I don't think Bods sticks around. He's getting older and is going to want a crack at the NHL and it's well-deserved but it's a numbers game. He's just had the 'misfortune' of playing under two NHL clubs with defensive depth in us and the Bruins. He'll be solid somewhere else imo but I'm sure he gets a long look at training camp again.

I agree that Muzzin doesn't seem to work (or at least fit without being redundant) anywhere else. That's why I think there's minimal change next year unless he's going with someone else in a package for a guy like Giordano.

Orpik-Doughty
Regher-Voynov
Martinez-Muzzin
McCnabb

Has Mitchell been that bad? No. Not even close.

I think he's been getting better/stronger as the year goes on and I bet he has a big bounce-back year next year. I know I'm in the minority but I want at least another year of Mitchell, maybe two (two would be stretching it).

The guy's game is smarts and positioning not speed and skill. I just can't see DL losing Greene and Mitchell at the same time and certainly not Scuderi, Greene, Mitchell, and Regehr over a couple of years for nothing and with no vets in return.

I really don't get the Mitchell hate. Sure, he's a step slower, but he's solid defensively for a guy that missed an entire season due to a knee injury. Yes, sometimes he takes stupid penalties, but who doesn't in the NHL?

It isn't about Mitchell being bad. He just isn't a top pairing D man, can't log the minutes to keep up with Doughty. So with Regehr at number 2 Mitchell's 3.5M for a 3rd pairing can be better spent elsewhere.

Either Mitchell or Greene should leave. They are playing average hockey. But with the pool one maybe could stay. But with that pool I think it's time the Kings give one of the young kids a shot at a spot.

Who said anything about Mitchell being a top pairing d-man with Doughty? He's on the 3rd pairing right where he should be, and nobody said they expect him to get $3.5 mill.

I thought it was because of a knee on knee by Brown?

Those are pretty tough servers. Must have been a knee followed up by an elbow.

Which one has been a healthy scratch for a good chunk of the last 20 games? That should answer your question.

Well sure if WM will take a discount in pay to play on a 3rd pairing. He may just retire or get another offer.

I believe WM will take a pay cut and stay. This organization stood behind him twice and he's made it very public how much he loves playing for the Kings.

I'm with you, but at the same time if someone offers him an extra million that could be pretty tempting for a guy in the twilight of his career. I don't know how much Willie's got in the bank but if you figure he takes home 400-500k out of every million after taxes and put that extra mil solely toward retirement he's essentially adding an extra 20k a year for the rest of his life. Probably something a lot of players don't think about until they realize their careers are coming to a close.

Yeah, I always wonder about that. I just don't see a contender offering him a ton of cash. However, he has a ring already so only he knows his priorities.

CAPGEEK.COM IS TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE.

Way to go Doty, you broke it!

I'm not kidding. I really thought it was me because it broke while I was mashing buttons  I give myself three of five classless Browns minus one because I apologized to you guys but not to doug Wilson.

I think the criticisms of Mitchell were valid early in the year but not anymore. I also think that there is a market for stay at home vet d which is why someone will give Greene 4 million for at least two years and I wouldn't be surprised to see someone sling Mitchell a contract but he will give us a shot to match it. Like I said above I do t see DL let us lose all these vet dmen leave year after year for nothing.

Pretty sure Mitchell would stay here for another championship run with the kings than to sign a final contract with a team he may only be with a year. It really isn't about the money, but rather enjoying your final season (assuming of course) in the national hockey league and have a shot at the cup.

All about the lasting memories, if I'm Willie Mitchell.

A good gm is always looking a couple of years ahead. And while he MAY only end up making minimal moves, he's constantly thinking about improving his team.

My proposal has nothing to do with VV's so-called off year. I'm a firm believer in buying low and selling high. Having said that I would consider moving VV, because Martinez can take his spot for a smaller cap hit.

Believe it or not, I'm perfectly fine with Muzzin as DD's linemate as long as he doesn't suck.

Just to clarify...one post after you mention a "good GM" (which I assume you think DL is) looks years ahead.

You suggest trading a 24 yo defense men who's worst pt totals ever are still better than the best season ever of the defensemen you suggest replace him. Who mind you is 2.5 yo older...

But if we are gonna sell high and buy low...lets line up that Quick for Reimer trade!!!!:D;) (maybe Leafs throw in Ryder and a 2nd)
