Comment From Matt
Jim, lots of Undrafted Free Agent Signings this off-season. Hughes, Allen, Dodero, Kantor, Donnay and Nicholls. Have you spoken with Clark or Gorton about these kids? (4) d-men out of the bunch. Any word on Tolchensky?

Jim Cerny: Matt and Guest: Most of these signed free agents are depth players in the organization, especially on defense where the brass was not happy with what they had in Hartford a year ago...they decided to go with a young group of signings with Conor Allen being the one that draws the most intrigue on the back end...Nicholls is an offensive player...giving him a chance like Kyle Jean got last year...and they love Kantor's make up and physical play...they hope he can grind his way into the NHL one day as a 3rd/4th liner...as for Tolchinsky, I do not believe he is receiving a contract

Re Tolchinsky, understanding is that he will play for NYR at Traverse City, and that NYR will not make an offer before that tournament completes.
IMHO. A good approach, let's them see him in game play with and against some guys older than OHL, all of whom are playing hard to make impressions for their own sakes.
He could just be a smaller Pavel Brendl, at least he doesn't cost a 1st-round pick.
It seems the only way situation changes is if Carolina were to sign him to NHL deal before he'd report to join the NYR T-City team.
If NYR sign him, his contract will slide for his age 19 and 20 years in Junior.

I didn't, but it sure as hell gave me a chuckle.

I think we're the only team that gets called our slang name casually.

We used to not care but I think we got nailed for calling out the "Debs" AFTER being called Rags and it was the inconsistent punishments that really drove us to start getting pissed off about it. And I don't include me in "us" because I couldn't give a rats ass what we're called by opposing fans who hate us.

I can't help but shake my head when it comes to the 'analysis' of drafting certain players in different parts of the draft. The draft is a crapshoot. Period. There's no rhyme or reason as to why certain players develop and others do not. Sure, there are commonalities, but none of this stuff is tangible. I could make an argument that you should always trade out of the 10th spot in the first round because from 1999-2007, it produced nothing but flakes and busts, with Luc Bourdon possibly being the lone exception.

Drafts really only mean that player X was valued at Y on some random day in June of some random year. Scouting, draft tendencies, individual bias, injuries, freak accidents, and dozens of other factors come into it. If it was really a "science" the draft would be 3 rounds long, because every viable talent would be taken in the first 90 picks.

McIlrath, despite his injury, has shown improvement in many areas of his game. He's bulking up considerably. He's handling himself very well when he fights against grown men. There's literally nothing to justify pegging him as a 'just a bottom pairing guy' at this point.

ODC's nagging and harping on it is annoying for sure but to be fair there is plenty of reason for any individual to form whatever opinion they want. Might hurt their credibility but losing HF credibility isn't even a small deal lol. BTW I was incensed we went with McI over Vlad and I actually also have a bad feeling he will prob only be 2nd/3rd pair while Vlad becomes a star at RW which we desperately need. On it's own I think McI will be a great Ranger though. Very glad we have him.

Can't wait to see him in some preseason games! :yo:

I assume that's the Jets facility, with the trainer wearing a Jets shirt and Ladds picture up there.

Do players normally train at other team facilities? That's pretty interesting. I know he's from Winnipeg, but kinda weird seeing a NYR pick inside a Jets building.

It's very common. This isn't a Jets sanctioned workout. Calvin Pickard tweeted the photo. He's an Avs prospect from Winnipeg.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had different sports atheletes there as well.

A lot of off season strength and conditioning workouts of young players from the same area brings together the best of the best of not just one sport.

I remember Matt Moulson, when he first signed with the Isles doing some S/C workouts with local football/baseball players and things of that sort.

Nash, Callahan, Zuc, Dorsett, Kristo, Miller, Fast - how is it that we need a RW "star". I think we need to take a look at the LW. And saying that a team needs a RW star is like saying that a goalie that can stop pucks is helpful for a team.

Lol, I'm sitting here saying why are all those white vacuum cleaners in the background? What are they working out in a storage facility...Then I realized they were exercise bikes.

Hehe, I am still tryinging to figure out how there can be a "steep incline", when it just don't look like it...

Does anybody know if Lindberg and Fast will be attending Traverse City? I noticed that Minny has some 1991 and older players. Lindberg and Fast are both 1991.

Does anyone know yet if traverse city tourney will be televised? I would expect it to be announced when the roster is presented, but that's an assumption.
