Prospect Info: 2013-2014 Rangers Prospects Thread (Player Stats in Post #1; Updated 12/17)

The US WJC camp roster will be cut today. Brady Skjei has played well while Boo Nieves has been quiet.

This is after Blue game against Finland on Sunday

Brady Skjei was a little inconsistent throughout the game, but I thought he showed great flashes defensively and was more engaged in the offensive zone as well. He’s big, strong and fast and looks like he’d be a great fit in the top four for this club if he can put everything together at Minnesota this year. The skills are there. As long as the decision-making matures a little, he’s going to be on this team.

After the games yesterday

Brady Skjei — D — I thought Skjei was pretty solid for the most part. His skating was especially evident as he did a good job closing gaps, using his feet to get pucks out of trouble and was really strong when he needed to recover. He is starting to jump up into plays a bit more, but is picking his spots a lot better than he has in previous years. He still looks pretty good to get on the final roster.

Jake Guentzel and Boo Nieves also were kind of in and out of visibility. I’m not sure there was a lot between the two to make any definitive calls. Both clearly have some skill and speed that would be helpful, but it’s not materializing enough consistently in camp.

Skjei has all of the tools. The Rangers are going to need him in the future. He was very good at the prospects camp in early July. Its a big year for him at Minnesota. All of the upperclassman have graduated or turned pro. Skjei and Mike Reilly will be the main guys for Minnesota.

I didn't see a second of Spelling last season, he played at obscure places. I of course don't "know", but to put it like this, if we look at what route a kid normally takes to make it Spelling is doing the complete opposite. And when it comes to a kid like Spelling, we are looking at maybe 1 of 15 making it. If even that. With Spelling going 180 in the wrong direction as the "1" who makes it normally goes.

The normal route would maybe be:
1 y after being drafted -- A very promising showing in the SEL, while maybe not putting a ton of pts on the board.
2-3 y after being drafetd -- Climbing up into a strong top 2 line role in the SEL.
3-5 y after being drafted -- Star in the SEL, or adopting very well to the NA game in the AHL. Getting his feet wet in the NHL.

There are examples of kids taking a long road to the NHL. Nobody heard of Johan Franzen when he was the age Spelling is now. Franzen played 5th tier hockey when he was 20 y/o. I played two divisions higher than him at that age. The 5 tier level in Sweden is a mix of a beer league + young kids that doesn't make it in the U20 league. Franzen in 10 games that year scored 23+2 (!) for 25 pts in 10 games which is pretty awsome and in a hurry went to the 2nd tier league and then the SEL. But it shows that nothing is never certain.

But its certainly a very bad sign...
 
Spelling was a 5th round pick. If he plays a game in the NHL,it will be a bonus. If you look at the hockeydb.com draft section of past drafts,so many players drafted don't see the NHL.
 
It's always a bad sign when a kid runs into a bad situation and then turns around and looks for the easy way out of it. Going back to Denmark is the easy way out. It's a shame as the kid does have some excellent scoring instincts, just doesn't seem to want to put in the work needed to make the jump.
 
nice to see Skjei make the team. He didnt last yr right? D men take some time to develop so this looks like a good step
 
Just realized its about 4 weeks or so to training camp. Its coming up quick - cant wait to see these kids in preseason.

Dog days for now though...

He made it this far last year. Just past the original cuts. Not out of the woods yet.

Agreed on his development though. Was never worried, just not happy about the program he chose. That's for another day though.
 
If Nieves has a good season this year he could be well on his way towards being the next successful NCAA prospect to join the Rangers.

I think Skjei will beat Boo to the Rangers. They are both on a very good track.

what player past or present does Boo play like???? i dont know much about his game...

Dodero inks contract with New York Rangers

Sudbury Wolves defenceman Charlie Dodero has signed a professional contract with the New York Rangers' organization.

The Chicago native joins fellow Wolves' graduate Michael Kantor who also signed a professional contract with the New York Rangers in April.

The Wolves' graduates are expected to start the season in Connecticut, the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers.

Dodero, 21, was acquired by the Wolves in a trade with the Kitchener Rangers in 2010. The free agent proceeded to work his way into a top defenceman role with the Wolves on the strength of his fluid skating, offensive skills and open-ice hits.

Dodero said he was proud to be a Sudbury Wolves defenceman and made an extra effort to thank and salute Wolves' fan at the conclusion of the Wolves' final playoff game in April.

"The Sudbury Wolves are very proud of Charlie and the way in which he completed his OHL career here in Sudbury" said Wolves' GM Blaine Smith.

"Charlie was always focused on working hard both on and off the ice and he led our young players by example. We are very happy for Charlie and Michael and pleased that the New York Rangers continue to show strong interest in our graduates."
