Could use one more year in college, but he's not far off to being an NHLer.

I think this is wrong, people are putting too much pressure on him. If he were close to the NHL, the Rangers would've made sure to convince him to go play in the AHL. If they are keeping him in college, chances are that the team doesn't believe he can be a top-4 AHL defenseman.

Skjei will play one season in college and 1-2 more seasons in the AHL. Look for him to make the NHL squad some time in the 2017 calendar year.

If we do trade Staal anywhere, I'd want a 2015 1st coming back. I don't care about the package unless that comes is a part of the return. That draft class is too sick!!

While drafting is exciting, then you have to sit and wait for 3-5 years for the player to make it and even then the odds aren't great for any pick not in the lottery.

Slats prefers (and he's right) to acquire young players or almost ready rookies like McDonagh, Boyle, Moore, Erixon, Prust, Bourret. It doesn't always work, but it certainly works more often than acquiring draft picks.

We haven't acquired a first or a second round pick since the clearing of 2003-04 season, and we did it then only because the team realized that rebuilding is a long-term process, so first you acquire picks and then in future years, you acquire young players and hopefully they all mature together.

It makes no sense for us to give up assets to get the 2015 first rounder. Even if that pick succeeds, by the time that kid reaches his prime, we are talking about the 2021-22 season. By then even Lundqvist's current contract is over and he either leaves/retires at the age of 39 or he's a shell of himself.

We need to go for it while Lundqvist is no older than his mid-30s. Getting first round picks is not part of the plan.

I thought the Rangers were giving him the option to play another year in college or jump to the AHL and are waiting on his decision? Regardless, his skill set should allow him to compete for an NHL job halfway through the 15-16 season or at the start of the 16-17 season at the latest.

When have the Rangers ever done that? Did they think McDonagh couldn't be a top 4 AHL dman when he went back for his junior year?

I'm sure the Rangers make recommendations to every player on where they feel they will best develop, but they don't push their prospects like some teams do. It's beyond ridiculous to assume that if Skjei doesn't play in the AHL next year, it's because the Rangers don't feel he's ready for it.

What the hell does this even mean? This isn't slavery. Brady Skjei is his own person. What if he wants to stay in college for one more season? The Rangers can't force him to do anything. Remember when they sent John Tortorella to Boston to convince Kreider to sign after his sophomore season? How'd that one work out? You're just making **** up for the sake of trying to sound informed.

Maybe I am too careful, but 'ready for the NHL' is not the same thing as 'ready for a season-long top-6 role'.
This season Falk/Diaz/Allen/McIlrath combined for a total of 37 NYR games.
That seems the role for McIlrath next year, a part-timer transitioning to a regular.
If he doesn't earn a spot out of camp, let him play first 6-8 weeks of top-4 minutes w HWP, then bring him up as depth D.
Huh? Teams usually carry 7 defenseman and one (Falk) is an obvious spare. McIlrath won't sit up here as a seventh defenseman. If he's NHL ready, he'll be a top six player. If not...hello Edmonton.

Harsh man. Ouch

There's no way Tortorella agreed to do that.

Skjei probably trusts them. Furthermore, various incentives like a little more money in the AHL and some butt-kissing can bring him over.

Huh? He's been developing nicely with Minnesota and came off a pretty good season. I'm pretty sure that the Rangers are giving him the option to stay an extra year at college or not. There really isn't any pressure on him at all.

Just like with Kreider, right?

Kreider was crap in NHL terms in 2011. He was placed in a perfect position to take advantage of his speed bursts in the 2012 playoffs when teams didn't expect his speed and size, but in 2012-13 he struggled even in Hartford. The first half a year, he was downright awful. He wasn't one of Hartford's top 12 forwards until February, but played only because of his potential.

In February, he began to show what he can do, but he'd have one good game, then two awful ones.

Had Kreider joined the Whale in 2011-12, he would've collapsed there. People who don't watch Hartford do not realize how bad he was there 1.5 years ago. The idea that he could've played AHL hockey in 2011 comes from people who didn't see him struggle in 2012.

This is all a great story that has literally NOTHING to do with the discussion at hand. You said, "If he were close to the NHL, the Rangers would've made sure to convince him to go play in the AHL." I then gave you the example of Chris Kreider, who, despite the best efforts of the Rangers to get him pro, chose to return for his junior season. Whether Kreider was NHL-ready or not at that time is besides the point. The Rangers wanted him to sign, but he didn't. Why the hell, therefore, would we assume that Skjei can't be close because he isn't signed? Or that the Rangers can just tell him to sign and he'll do it no questions asked despite recent history proving that it clearly doesn't work this way?

Is it possible that Boo Nieves is the most important of all of our boom or bust forward prospects? I'm not saying he's the best since Duclair and Buchnevich certainly look better right now, but Nieves panning out would fill the key hole on our roster. We desperately need a big, strong, fast center in our top six. He's probably three or four years away, but he could be that guy.

What do people who saw him a lot this year think? His assist rate stayed the same, but his goals dropped way off. Was he just snakebit or did his play decline? He definitely needs to take a big step forward next year.

No, MCI fillls the most important need. If he is clearing men in front of Hank, we will give up no goals the whole year. If Hank sees 'em, he stops 'em.

When did McIlrath become a forward? I specifically said "of all of our boom or bust forward prospects."

He was a bit snakebit, but as a whole, he didn't look as dangerous the entire year.

I'm a Michigan student and hockey STH, and last year, whenever he touched the puck, the crowd rose to their feet. He was always exciting.

This year, despite a lot of forwards taking the next step on the team, he did not. Boo was probably our best forward last year. He wasn't one of our 6 best this year, to be frank.

I hope he really turns it around next year.

EDIT: This year, if I wasn't always specifically watching him because of my Rangers' fandom, you would never hear about him. If you non die-hard Michigan hockey fans, they likely won't know who Boo is based off of last year's play. He was a passenger.

Sooooo....Zamorsky wears t-blades. Hoping that's an old picture. Otherwise.......

I watched U of M play a couple of times last year and was super impressed with Boo, especially as a rookie/freshman. Somebody (I thought it was BN, but he never followed up on the topic) mentioned that he got hurt towards the end of the season and it had an impact on how he played when he came back. Then he has this extremely disappointing season, which is quite disturbing. Do you (or anyone for that matter) remember anything about an injury late in his first year?

It would really stink if he stalls out. He was extremely promising in that first year...

For the record, I watched Skjei play in four or five games last year and thought he got noticeably (and dramatically) better as the year progressed. I think he would have a legitimate shot to make the big club out of camp if he chose to leave school and there were a spot available on the left side. It would be an interesting battle between him and Allen for sure.

As a freshman, he was phenomenal. Especially in the second half of the year. I'm not exaggerating when I say Boo was our best player for our team.

And I don't recall an injury at all. Again, this year, he just looked like a passenger. He wasn't noticeably bad, but wasn't noticeable at all. For a forward, that's obviously not good.

Yeah, I don't either. In any event, keep up the updates, Matt! Hopefully you're reporting on a dramatic bounce-back next year...
