Just a reminder of how much Duclair has grown up in the last few years, you know the kid that got suspended by his own teammates at 17.
Last weekend was the QMJHL draft. Unlike the WHL and OHL, the QMJHL draft is very similar to NHL's where players taken in first round get to walk to the stage and take a picture with their new jersey, while in the other rounds, they just go to their team's table. Duclair called Quebec's coach a few days before the draft asking him if he could be there at the Remparts' table to welcome the new prospects and talk with them. Of course, the coach said yes. Quebec already has last season's captain coming back but his spot on the roster isn't guaranteed. If he leaves, I believe Duclair will be captain. Considering his past and questions about his attitude before his draft, it would be quite an accomplishment. And yet, just being there and wanting to take the lead like that, is already a great feat.

There were rumours about Ryan Graves heading to Quebec during the draft but nothing happened. I wouldn't rule out a possible move sometime at the beginning of the season or at mid season.
A QMJHL reporter said that Graves lifted his no trade clause to go to Val D'Or but one of his demands before lifting it was to be traded the following season.

They usually don't list players on that page unless they're under contract, or are recently drafted prospects.

sorry but that's not true, Pashnin was there into this season
And until last summer Ilya Gorokhov ('95 draft with Savard, Dube, Purinton) was still there
Guys like Baranka, Psurny, Zeliska, Bahensky were still there for years after returning to Europe
Different draft periods have had different rights retention periods.
These days I believe only with NCAA, KHL and maybe one or 2 other euro league, are there rights agreements which extend beyond 2 years after draft.
Interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if we let the rights expire on either of those guys.
On Spelling, he signed an extension with SonderjyskE three days ago. I would assume that that was either in direct response to word from the Rangers that he wouldn't be offered a contract, or part of the reason that he wasn't offered a deal by the Rangers.
Pashnin was just never that good. He's an okay player in the KHL, nothing to write home about.

Are skilled right handed defensemen much rarer than skilled lefties? It seems like almost every puck moving defenseman we have aside from Stralman plays the left side: McDonagh, Moore (kinda), Skjei, Bodie, etc. Is Allen a good puck mover (in terms of breakout passing moreso than putting up points)? He's left handed too. Calle Andersson's really it for right handed puck movers in the system. I guess Diaz kind of fits the bill as a third pairing guy.
Allen already saw a little time this season. Depending on the moves we make, I suppose he could be in line for a role on next year's team. He was very good the first half or so of the season, but hit that "NCAA wall" towards the end of the year. Possibly Mat Bodie as well, though I don't know how ready he is.
Ryan Haggerty is a guy with nice tools that might earn a look. He hasn't played a professional game, though, so that might be a stretch.

The new guys all will need time in Hartford next year. Allen's probably ready.

Allen is the McDonagh of the AHL, but on the right side. He's a very good defenseman who makes the simple, but correct play every time. Even in the NHL, how many stupid mistakes did you see him make? I didn't have any particular hopes for him prior to the start of the season, but every time I'd see a McDonagh-esque play on the ice, there was #4.
Allen is already 24 years old, but this was only his first pro season, so obviously there is a lot more he can learn. Coaches don't just babysit players who grow all by themselves at a given age. Coaches help players grow. Look at Talbot. Granted he's a goalie, but whereas Allen immediately began as a first-pair AHL defenseman in his rookie season, Talbot was sent down to the ECHL, then was an AHL backup for 2 seasons, and only became a star AHL goalie in his 4th pro season, joining the Rangers in what is now his 5th pro season. And Talbot was only half a year younger than Allen when he turned pro. Why? Because he needed to learn all the little things that one needs to pick up to be a quality pro. I bet Talbot will continue to improve next season with Benoit Allaire as his full-time goalie coach.
Similarly, Allen has a couple more years to improve his game as he learns from the coaches and pro vets. He's already on the cusp of making it and if he improves his game just a little, he'll be an NHL. Honestly, a major reason why I think he didn't make the Rangers in the second half of the season is that the Rangers were afraid that a bubble player like him who's just out of college may hit the "NCAA Wall" that he eventually hit. Getting in better shape for next year and learning a few more tricks of the trade will make him an NHLer at some point in 2014-15.
I hope he can progress beyond that, however. Look at Stralman, who took until the age of 25 to establish himself as a quality NHL defenseman and continued to improve until this year at the age of 27. Actually, I think Allen as the next Stralman is not the worst comparison. Not exactly the same style, but Allen can, with a lot of hard work, develop into a similarly-valuable NHL defenseman.

Depends on what you call "ready". Is he ready to be a Corey Potter (former Rangers draftee) quality defenseman? Yes. Allen can serve as a #7, filling in when injuries hit, but otherwise watching from the stands. But he's only 24 and a rookie, so this is not a good career track for him. The Rangers will keep training him in the AHL until he's ready for top-6 duty.

actually Allen is lefty.
The NYR signed righty D prospects are McIlrath, Hughes, Noreau and Donnay.
Bodie is intense, smart and skilled, but small-ish, will need to adapt to playing against bigger physical guys every night.
Allen may well be the most rounded and NHL-ready of the young D.
IMHO, McIlrath should get a full season of AHL top pair ice time, he's still learning.

Brady is one of those players. Maybe he will make his decision after Rangers prospects camp which begins June 30. I think its the 30th. The draft is two days before.

Allen and Miller are the closest to being NHL'ers. After them it's Fast and Lindberg. McIlrath needs more time. Jeff Beukeboom was a 1st round pick and it took him several years in the minors to make it. Dylan is at least half a season away. Patience. Biggest thing he needs is poise with the puck. He'd be best suited as a guy you have riding shotgun with a PMD. Rangers could use more snarl--and any kind of nastiness from a blueliner would be very welcome.
Brought up Beukeboom. Rangers gave up waiting on Andre 'Moose' Dupont--another 1st rounder going back into the 70's. He became a very good d-man for the Flyers and was a seriously tough guy. He won two Stanley Cups. Rangers got the crap kicked out of them numerous times by the Flyers in the 70's and Dupont was right in the middle of it. He was a legit top 4 on a very good to excellent team. On some teams he would have been a top pairing guy.

I assume Allen will taker the space of Stralman next season because Anton is likely to get a huge offer from somebody.
Miller is likely to replace Brad at center.
I think they will find space for Fast one way or another.
Lindberg and McIlrath will start in Hartford. You can't start that many rookies at the same time. But both will get their chance when injuries hit.
Yea, I think we'll be giving space to some of the younger guys. That always happens after a cup run with several impending FA's.
Stralsy and Pouloit seem like guys we can't resign. Richards a guy we amnesty. Boyle and Moore resigned.
That leave us with:

XX-Brassard-Zucc
Boyle-Moore-Dorsett
Mcd-G
Staal-XX

I think Diaz will take the XX spot on the 2nd pair defense, but who knows. We have some spare parts right now that can get us some other players that fit AV's style. Edler could be a guy we look to obtain from the Canucks. If the organization is looking to move past McIlrath that could be a guy we look to deal for Edler.
Edler-Staal pairing would be pretty cool to watch. Edler adds more offense to our blue line.
The XX on the 3rd line could be Fast. Could be Lindberg. Could be Kristo. Could be another undervalued vet. Doubt it's Duke but could even be him. His wheels are serious gas burners.
Either way, i'm excited for these last few games we have here. We'll deal with next season when we get there.
Truth be told, Sather finds ways to add cap every year and it hasn't totally screwed us yet. Stastny could be a serious target, too. Never know with Sather and his magic rabbits in the hat.

Change is good.
Solid penalty killer and pesky speedy little guy who was constantly injured and never projected as anything more than a lower line forward in the AHL - but he took a step forward last year and showed a much more rounded game, including some surprising offense, while actually managing to stay healthy. I now think that he has a chance of eventually getting a cup of coffee and potentially even sticking in a 3rd line defensive specialist/PK role on some team in the NHL. I still think the odds are against it, but before last year I would've said that they were nonexistent.
