Quebec opened the scoring against juggernaut Baie-Comeau, Duclair with the primary assist on Olivier Archambault's goal.

Alexis Vanier of Baie-Comeau is a player I'd take a flier on in the 2nd round if we had multiple picks. Big guy at 6' 5", moves the puck well, solid player.

Ryan Graves scored his first goal as a Foreur.

The Drakkar are not a fun team to play against by any standard.

I'm happy with Graves being traded to Val-d'Or. Would rather him play on a good team already on the rise, than a bad team like Charlottetown. Him getting to play with the highest scoring team in the Q can definitely help him out there.

EDIT: Graves now has career highs in goals (4) and tied his career high in points (16) tonight.

I'm not advocating having "goons" to serve as peace keepers. I'm advocating MOAR FIGHTing, and retaliation when our guys get hit. The link above shows DZ initiating and Kopecky reacting... but I absolutely love the fact that both Prust and Rupp went after him after the fact.

Perhaps it's blood lust on my end, or perhaps I like having a team that isn't going to get pushed around. But I believe having guys step up for each other creates a sense of brotherhood, and bond that creates a strong sense of camaraderie that lends itself to team chemistry.

In the video above, DZ 2 hands Kopecky, Kopecky cheap shots DZ. Prust tackles him and then Rupp goes in, warns Kopecky to drop the the gloves, giving him the opportunity to square up. Kopecky doesn't and takes a beating. None of the FLA panthers do anything about it.

BTW that ice cream example is a classic example of cor-relational analysis. You're getting a good education, and it shows.

I totally agree with the more fighting thing. There have been times this year where I wondered if it was even still allowed, as the Rangers were in good spots for a fight and didn't even push anybody around. I don't think it's an issue of preventing bad hits as much as it's an issue of wearing the opponent down and boosting morale for your own team. That 11 - 12 team was very close, and I think they're toughness was due to that, or at least reinforced by that as you said.

Thanks for the education comment. It's always good to hear that my money was well spent to some degree.

I hope that getting McI up in NY will give the team a bit of a rougher profile all around, and hopefully inspire some of that toughness that they had back then.

Duclair had an excellent chance real early. Playing well since he moved to Kurt Etchegary's line.

Brady Skjei is huge. I'm watching Minnesota play Michigan right now. His stride is effortless. I watched McDonagh play at Wisconsin, he is so similar. Very calm with the puck, makes the smart play. You can tell he is stronger than most of his competition and he is able to skate his way out of trouble. His partner Holl is awful.

I have been watching for Nieves in this game. He isn't moving his feet like he was last year. He's playing wing in this game too. If I'm the Rangers, I seriously consider telling him to go pro after this year. He is barely getting any minutes, playing out of position. I know this opinion won't be a popular one but I'm watching him and he has the puck skills. Where is the speed he had? It didn't just go away. He needs to get minutes or this is not good for him.

Thanks for the update. Disappointing about Nieves. I was able to catch a game last season and he really excited me. Good size, skating, and vision. He scored a wicked wrister from the slot that game. Hopefully he can turn his sophomore slump around.

The problem is, Nieves isn't getting the minutes to work his way out of it. I understand you have to do something in order to get the minutes to work out of it but he's on the 3rd line and they are playing their top 2 a ton.

One major difference I'm seeing from Nieves is that he no longer is carrying the puck like he was last year. To me, that's a confidence thing. When he has space he has good wheels and he has good hands. He sees the ice well too.

Love what you're reporting about Skjei.

And, if what you're saying about Nieves is true (and I have no reason to doubt you), then I absolutely agree that he should leave as you suggest. He was SO good as a Freshman last year - and Red is motivated to play who will help him win year by year, whereas the Rangers make sure the prospects in their system (that they think have upside) get playing time at the right position in all situations.

I'm always assuming everyone here is a pro scout so I keep to myself when it comes to player evaluation. I am also 32 years old and have been a Ranger fan since I was 11.

But speaking of the topic of where a guy was drafted and what other talent was available and whether the drafting of this player was a failure or not is nonsense. If you get an NHL player that plays more than 5 years for your club he is a success. And this goes across any sport. Maybe in Hockey it is not like in football or even baseball where you can find all star talent in the 7th round of almost every draft. I guess the pool is more limited. That said I look at the Rangers squad and I compare it to how putrid their farm system was when I first started to really follow the Rangers which ironically was the year they won the cup. And in the last 7 years the Rangers have had a pretty steady income of homegrown players populating their rosters year in and year out. Callahan, Dubinsky, Anisimov, Girardi, Staal, Stepan, McDonagh, Sauer, Hagelin, Kreider, Talbot and the kids that are still to come that I am 99% are gonna make it, based on what I've seen with my own eyes and have seen reported. Guys like J.T., McIlrath, Allen, Fast, Lindberg. All of them the kinds of players that help your team win. Players of that mold, who are steady and fast and strong. And I keep seeing the trend of building solidly through the draft and one of these days... Maybe it's Buchnevich, hopefully it's Duclair... or maybe even St. Croix who some people already labeled a bust and don't even see him play. One of these days one of those guys is going to BOOM. And with the kind of money the Rangers throw around I know it's only a matter of time until we actually contend and for years. All the kids I mentioned above made the NHL and none of them are mediocre players but pretty damn good ones. I even count McDonagh and guys like MZA and Girardi as made in NY. Even Boyler and Pruster as they were developed primarily on the pro level as New York Rangers regardless of how they were obtained. McDonagh was a steal from the Canadians but he totally turned pro as a Ranger. And I don't care if Tarasenko goes on to score 20,000 goals for the Blues or whoever, if McIlrath can be that sandpaper defenseman who clears the crease and intimidates and destroys people and perhaps has a decent shot from the point that would be gravy. But I just want him for the sandpaper. You need that in a team. You need an Orpik and Beuk. Whether it stops a bully team like Boston from running down your players it doesn't matter. The fact that I have a guy who can destroy every single guy on a team like that is a pretty HUGE weapon both psychologically and tactically. And those are assets just as important as offensive wingers. How many times have teams run down Henrik or given him snow showers? I remember only Sauer ever stopped that kind of stuff. And he was pretty tough but is a Labrador compared to the Rottweiler that is McIlrath. And man I am by no means saying this guy will be an all-star or a great player. And I am not going to say he won't be either. But I do know he is going to make the Rangers and he is going to lay people out and people are gonna love him for it even if they are still complaining about Tarasenko. And by the way I can tell you for a damn fact that McIlrath is already light years better than Dale Purington for all those people who make those comparisons.

We heard the same exact things about Chris Kreider in his sophomore year. He's not getting enough minutes/opportunities. Jerry York is misusing him. He should jump ship to the CHL/turn pro at the end of the season. If Nieves were to sign then cool. I think Red Berenson knows a thing or two about utilizing players, though. Let's all take a chill pill.

Duclair had one assist, and was minus-one.

Graves had a goal and an assist, and was plus-two.

Skapski stopped 32 of 34 shots and picked up another win.

Tambellini was scoreless.

Kreider's worst season at BC was his sophomore season.

It's a pretty normal trajectory. Enter a circuit where little is known about you, play well as a rookie. Come into your second season overconfident, teams adapted to you, and you suffer a drop in production. By the third season, you've adapted to the opponents adaption, and you dominate.

Nieves has legit skills. Get him to the AHL. He's got an NHL build.

Nieves hasn't looked great in my viewings of him this year, but he hasn't looked as bad as his stat line would suggest. I think he's had some bad puck luck and is just frustrated.

Hah, Holl is horrendous. Such a bad DI player.

I don't get how he was a 2nd round pick. It still bewilders me.

It's incredible. He and Max Gardiner led Minnetonka to a MN state tourney win and they got hyped to all hell. I went to a bunch of their games that year and honestly never understood it.

Remarkably, the Gardiner pick was 10x worse. He stuck out for mediocre to poor skating at the high school level. Let alone beyond that. And the Blues used a 3rd rounder on him. Played one season with the Gophers...then a season in the USHL (0.5 ppg), then played a season of CLUB hockey at Penn State. Now he's back at D1 again and has 1 point in 19 games. Yeeesh.
