Messier only became about the money when he hit New York. The guy was massively underpaid in Edmonton. Massively. Conn Smythe, Hart, 1st/2nd AS teams, Cups. Messier was making peanuts the year he won the Hart (and should have won the CS) in 1990.

Revis saw Bailey and Asamugah and Samuel sign mega deals, and he wanted his money. Why not? He's better than all four were/are.

The money Messier demanded as a Ranger was a by product of Pocklington's penny pinching the dynasty.

The usual expectation (fair or not) is for a player to honor the deal they signed. That was the problem that many Jets fans had with Revis--he'd sign a huge deal and then would want to renegotiate before it was over.

I don't blame him for it. Fans want to get rid of guys in any way possible the second they begin to under-perform. It's hypocritical. Either you expect every contract to be honored for its full duration or you don't. Not just when it suits you/your team.

That said--while I don't blame him, it was tiring as a fan. I approved of the deal when it was made and love it now.

The one major difference between Messier and Revis was that Messier played in a league without a salary cap while Revis plays in a league with a salary cap. There's a huge difference. If there was no salary cap in the NFL, Revis probably would have been paid.

Yup, the Revis trade was a great trade for the Jets. There's no reasonable argument to the contrary.

Millner busts and Revis continues to be an all pro for years. In that case it's a reasonable arguement. Hope that doesn't happen. Seriously doubt it will. But any trade for picks is determined a success based largely on how the pick develops and the traded player winds up playing. I was never bothered by his money demands. I am aggravated that a team like the Pats can keep Tom Brady on the cheap and the Jets get an all world guy and he's all about the money. I hope as his endorsements dry up in TB he realizes he's a dumbass for taking himself out of the spotlight. If he gets hurt the team can cut him and they don't have to pay him bc there's no guaranteed money. In many ways it's just a dumb move by him imo.

Even so, it was a necessary trade. There was no way the Jets could keep Revis. If Milliner turns out to be even a average/good corner, it's still better than getting one more season out of Revis and then nothing.

The trade also will be determined based on what the Jets do with the cap space. There's a lot more than just picks being moved. The Jets couldn't afford to pay Revis what he want(s/ed).

For what the Jets were trying to do, it was a smart move getting rid of Revis. Game-changing defenders are rare. As great as LT was, look at his teammates on the DL and LB.

The cap prevented the Jets to build around Revis. And if you ask me, their defense looks great so far without him.

Unlike some Giant fans I have no ill will towards the Jets. I'd root for them 1000x over before rooting for the Eagles/Cowboys/Skins to even win a regular season game.

Geno looks legit. I hope he keeps it up for you guys.
Agreed, the only time I don't root for the Jets is when they're playing the Giants. I love watching their defense stomp teams out, wish the Giants could be like them

I was a bit disappointed regarding the Revis trade at first. However, I'm pleasantly surprised with how the season is turning out so far and I think the move was definitely for the best. Milliner won't be the next Revis, but we don't need him to be. The flexibility in the offseason allowed us to bring in a lot more talent. Idzik deserves a lot of credit for the success so far.

Walter's current mock has us taking Clowney at #3 and passing up on Matthews and Nix.

I've learned to stay away from mock drafts. Fans get too enchanted with the prospect of getting one specific player.

No one thought the Jets would draft Wilkshake, Coples, or Richardson... they've all turned out great. Coples still has a little bit of developing but that's because he's being progressed into an OLB position, he was a 4-3 lineman at UNC.

And then when you get enchanted with a specific player, and they don't take him, you end up hating the new pick. Don't go into it with an open mind.

Giants have way too many holes to fill. They can't afford to take JaDeveon. If they get the 1-3 pick they should trade it down to lets say the 8 and get another 1st and maybe even 2nd. A lot of talent in this draft. Take an OL and then go on to next deemed important position after that. Having 2 first and 2 seconds is a lot more important in my opinion than drafting Jadeveon Clowney.

The Jets have the potential to be scary good next year. I don't think we'll be bad enough to get an elite WR or Barr. I like the end of the 1st round OLBs more than the end of the first WRs, so I'd go Van Noy in the first and then a guy like Ebron or Lyerla. Wouldn't touch a 3rd round WR- we need elite talent there. If we could swap a 3rd for a guy like Gordon, I'd bite. Otherwise, draft a safety like Tre Boston or Craig Loston, (could draft both with our two 3rds) and sign a guy like Maclin in FA.

I think the Jets will have somewhere north of 50 million to spend this upcoming offseason.

All our tailbacks are still signed cheaply. Think they definitely like what they saw last night between all 3.

Think Tone and Cromartie will both be cut to free up more space. Need 1-2 veteran receivers to help out Geno. Need another veteran guard to solidify the damn o-line. Gonna need another CB if Cromartie is cut, unless Walls or Wilson step up (that's assuming Milliner progresses enough to be able to take the #1 WR). Gotta resign the safeties and look for another outside linebacker to replace production from Pace and/or Barnes. Kellen Winslow and Jeff Cumberland aren't the answers at TE either.

Look at Seattle, you'll get an understanding of how Idzik will construct this team. He'll likely solidify the o-line and get Geno some extra time. Kid has a cannon and is accurate as hell when he has time. When he gets a little jumpy, i.e the line begins to collapse, is when he makes errors in judgement or hasty and bad decisions. Look for another veteran lineman to be signed.

We lack a power back like Lynch but we've made up for it with our talent by committee. I don't think he's going to upgrade our RBs. Just our line so they can succeed more. In terms of receiver, I think he's going to do the same thing as RB's. Get some veteran route runners, stockpile them, let them compete - best ones make the roster.

Look for Rex to get his pick in first round again. Probable OLB. Think he's set with Harrison, Wilk, and Richardson on line. Coples Demario and Harris make up 3/4 of the LB crew. Look for another OLB, McIntire has been given every opportunity to succeed and hasn't ran with it. Not the answer.

Look for WR competitions all next training camp. 3-4 vet guys who are cut and willing to prove they still have it in the tank along with Hill and Kerley. Tone gone for salary cap purposes.

Maybe look for a 2nd round TE pick up. Maybe a guy that slips in the first round. This draft seems deep on WR's and linemen, a few will drop to 2nd round.

Another CB will be added via fa.

I like the direction of the team.

Revis was always complaining about money. I love Mark Messier the hockey player. He always complained about the money. Its gets very irritating to hear these guys complain about the money t3 years after they signed a contract which hasn't expired. Revis held out in 2007 to get his rookie deal. In 2010,he held out again. He was complaining about his contract in spring/summer of 2012 but he couldn't hold out because its would have taken away his ability to void his contract after 2013. Revis was a pain in the ass. Good riddance. Messier was a pain in the ass too. Revis wanted $16M. Not that many teams were interested in paying $16M to a corner. Besides TB,how many teams were willing to give up a #1 for Revis? The Jets did well getting a #1 and #4 which becomes a #3 if Revis is on the TB roster when the league year begins in March. Tampa isn't cutting Revis after one year. Revis would have voided his contract after this season and the Jets would have gotten a comp pick for the 2015 draft. Good riddance.
Revis is a top CB unfortunetly all he cares about is being the top moneymaker on his position which is a fact by his pwn admission. We really had no choice because we couldnt pay him 16 million per year coming off a ACL. We got Richardson and a Round 3 pick which so far looks good

Mark Messier had a contract in 1994. There was a clause which allowed Messier to request a contract renegotiation if the Rangers won a Stanley Cup. The Rangers weren't obligated to give him a new contract. It goes both ways. Sometimes the player outperforms the contract and the player is stuck in a bad contract. Many times the player doesn't perform at his previous or past level and the team is stuck. Thankfully the NHL CBA doesn't allow teams to renegotiate existing SPCs. Messier held out of camp in 1994. In 1994,the players had a camp and played preseason games with the CBA expiring at the end of camp. Lockout #1. Messier had a contract. His father Doug negotiated it. Blame him. Then in 1997,Messier said his time of being the highest paid player was over. Next thing you know Messier is holding a conference call ripping the Rangers over their offer. Its the same offer Gretzky accepted the previous summer. Wayne turned down the Canucks big offer to play with Messier only to see Messier take the Canucks offer one year later.

The Jets screwed up with Revis. He had a contract in 2010. The Jaguars told Maurice Jones Drew to stay home when he wanted a new deal in 2012 after signing a contract in 2009. Honor the current contract or stay home. Drew reported to camp right before the start of the game. No lost game checks.

In the end, the Jags are unlikely to move on Jones-Drew's requests. "There's no decision here,'' Jags owner Shad Khan told the Florida Times-Union in July. "It's his choice. There's been very little for us to do rather than wait on whatever he might choose to do ... There's more than 50 players [on the team] under contract. There are other people under contract in management, coaches. Does that mean if you do it for one, you do it for everybody.

"Where do you draw the line?''

Actually, a number of mocks had the Jets grabbing Wilk if he was still on the board. I know for a fact that Walter had them taking him if he was available (IIRC he had him going like 10 spots higher in the draft than he did).
