@AGrossRecord: Vigneault said he began internal conversations with #NYR brass this morning about a possible Hartford (AHL) call-up. Nothing decided yet.

Because of Cally, or another attempt to improve our play?

Gross also said Brassard is fine, will play tomorrow, AV told him.

well they have 13 F still with Cally out. Not sure if they need to call anyone up although they may realize Pyatt and Pouliott are piles

So Richards, Brassard, Nash?

You need to step outside of the small box that is just the last couple months of hockey. Look at the totality of his play. Is he having a bad season? Sure. I am not sure how you guys can jump ship on a guy like Callahan so damn fast. This guy is a warrior. Is it really frusterating to see him constantly injured this season? Yes it is...but have some perspective. For example, look at Richards, losing a training camp can completely alter a players season. IMO, he will not command more than $5m per season after what we have seen so far in 2013-2014. I would sign him at 5/25 all day.

Good post!

Has his season really been that bad? Not at all, he is playing below his normal but he still has the best GPG average next to Nash on the team, and still was in the top 5 before yesterday in points for forwards and while playing less games and receiving less offensive time due to injuries.

People need to focus their concerns to guys like Stepan and Hagelin who are playing worse than Callahan was, at least Cally has excuses with the multiple injuries.

Stepan has scored a goal in only 3 out of 32 games this season.
Hagelin has not had a point in over 6 games.

It's frustrating because I think Cally deserves a chance to prove himself and get an extension, for what he has done last couple of seasons. I have to agree that 5 and 5 sounds what he will get, and I know he wants to be on this team, so hopefully he does not get greedy like Stepan did.

I think from the way I have enjoyed Cally for his career, I do feel that he is having a very 'off' year. He is not running all over the ice hitting everything that moves. He isn't having those much needed energy shifts that set a tone and change the momentum of the game. I am not so worried about the scoring, with Cally it comes and it goes, and I am perfectly ok with that. With all that being said, he will eventually get back to form, I am pretty confident in that. I am also confident that in ANY system on ANY team in the NHL, you could use a Cally.

What has he done this year? The captain needs to show up every game and set the tone. Its obvious he cant fit in this system so why tie up 5-6 mil in a guy like Callahan? Intangibles only get you so far. Injuries are another concern.

Lol do you read posts or just skim for key words then respond to your demented version of what was said?

Excuse me? I asked you what has Callahan done THIS season to earn 5 mil? Seems like his body is breaking down and he seems like a shell of his former self. Do you think he fits in AVs system? I bet you love him because he wears the C right and you think it makes him untouchable?

Callahan has not had the same on-ice effect this season or the last that he has in the past.

Also, Stepan and Hagelin aren't in line for a new lengthy contract this off-season. Callahan has. You said it, Callahan has multiple injuries. That doesn't seem like a reason to extend him when it's an annual thing.

I think you need to consider the totality of someones career to make a true decision contract wise. I do not see how people find logic in judging this guy in the 24 games he has played in this injury riddled season, compared to his over 400 game NHL career. Is that logical? I also mentioned previously that missing a training camp can SEVERELY alter a players season(a la richards). Also, If you read my post before I said that ANY team in the NHL would take a guy like Callahan. Yes he fits, anywhere. No he is not a top line scoring forward, nor has he ever been. He is a guy who can change the entire momentum of a game with his energy and his grit. There are not many guys like Cally in the NHL...in fact you can count them on one hand. Winning in the NHL is not all about scoring, it is about remaining competitive throughout the course of a game. Callahan is the type of player that will help any team do that. All of this is his on ice presence and not even mentioning the off the ice and locker room stuff. He is 28 years old, a 5 year deal takes him to 33 and I think that is extremely reasonable.

Callahan had 154 hits and 31 points in 45 games last season. That is good for 10th in the NHL in hits and was on pace for about 55-60 points and 25-30 goals if it had been a normal 82 game season. Not the same on ice effect? If we are talking this season, sure, but last season he was his normal beast self.

What have you done for me lately?
Seriously, a five year deal somewhere below Dustin Brown money would be acceptable ImO.
I do not see that happening though
And that complicates matters Quite the lot

Obviously Callahan hasn't been the Callahan we've all known over the past few years, but he does have what, 7 goals already? He still does finish his checks every time I watch. He just doesn't seem to be having the energy this year. His blocks have gone down since coming back from his broken thumb injury, which is understandable. I also think he doesn't ever play well on a 3rd line role because he's not great at handling the puck.

He'll be fine, I have no worries there.

The thing that I believe is the biggest problem, like others have pointed out, is the lack of production from Stepan and Hagelin. Hags, too, is another player that just plays awesome on a top 2 line. Ever since he's been put on the 3rd line I feel like he's been very invisible.

Stepan...this kid has to step it up. I was worried after last years awesome season from Steps, that he was going to regress a bit, and he has. It's just not even the point totals, it's the scoring chances too. I'd like to see the Hags-Stepan-Nash line reunited. I think the Kreider-Stepan-Zucc line has run its course.

I nominate HFNYR. We can all collectively run the team. Can't be worse than we already are.

Even Bern can join in on the fun![/QUOTE]

:biglaugh: Bern would be like George Costanza in the episode of Seinfeld where George is going to be promoted to assistant GM and figures out a way to get Barry Bonds without giving up anything.
Bernie Williams and Jim Leyritz is hardly nothing....

Rangers will now pretend that Staal isn't a member of the organization. Shush Shush Shush keep it mum.

I'm not laughing at our injury situation.

George: "I think I got it. How 'bout this? How 'bout this? We trade Jim Leyritz and Bernie Williams, for Barry Bonds, huh? Whadda ya think? That way you have Griffey and Bonds, in the same outfield! Now you got a team! Ha ha ha."

He didn't state how they were going to get Griffey. I also think he overestimates how much of a sweetener San Fran would consider Jim Leyritz.

How the mighty have fallen.. Captain America becomes trade bait. 30 games into the season...

He has made contributions through out this season, and he has come into the season with off-season shoulder surgery, he had 3 Goals in 2 games including a highlight goal, before breaking his thumb from blocking shots. He then had 4 points in 5 games, and got hurt again finishing a check, so every time he gets heated up in offense he has bad luck. He has 7 goals, played less games then most of the forwards and is still 2nd in goal scoring. He has had much less offensive time because of AV putting him on less time because of those injuries.

He had been making his checks, 5 hits against the Devils, and 4 hits against Washington, he also had 2 primary assists in that Devils game. Tell ya, if he scored the OT game winner, and not take a high-stick penalty no one would even say a word about letting Callahan walk. My point is, a good game becomes forgotten when you take a rare careless penalty. Cally has been a top 3 star in a lot of these games this season, even if they did not win them. Remember against Winnipeg with that effort goal? Do you really want to give that away? He showed his leadership and sadly no one else followed and they lost that game, not his fault.

The Kreider-Stepan-Zucc line has looked decent, but Cally gets back he should be teamed up with Stepan.

As per Hagelin, he has gotten bumped up to one of the top two lines only to fail, and he has no points in 7 games, plus his speed is just not helping them to get scoring opportunities as often as they should. They need to create more odd man rushes and breakaways.

Out of this entire team there are two players I get real excited about when they have a breakaway because I know they have a good chance of scoring. One is Nash, and the other is a guy some people think should be traded or not extended.:shakehead

Signing Callahan for 6 or 7 years would be a massive mistake. Get what you can for him.

So he has a bunch of injuries and this is a reason to keep him and extend him? To me those are reasons to not do that.

We must be watching different games because I don't think Callahan has played very well at all. He definitely hasn't been a top 3 star constantly this season. He's been underwhelming for 2 straight seasons now and he's always injured.

Callahan should not be extended. I know everyone loves him because he's the captain and he works hard, etc. etc. but he's an average 2nd line player who's constantly injured. He's not going to be worth the money he gets and it'd be better for the Rangers not to handcuff themselves to him. I've found him to be overrated for a long time now. I also have little faith in Rangers' management to let him go, so they'll probably give him what they need to give him to re-sign him to some contract that everyone will hate in a few seasons instead of trading him (if he's even healthy for that).
