I think the Rangers may actually look to draft a goalie in the 2nd or 3rd round this year. The revolving door in Hartford is embarrassing.

You don't waste a high draft pick to help Hartford. There are plenty of goalies like Dov who would do a competent job in the AHL and can be signed to a slightly above middle class salary.
They may take a stab at someone like Stajcer in the late rounds, but they aren't wasting early picks to help Hartford.
I fully expect Lundqvist to play here another 7 seasons because top goalies go to the age 38 without a problem. Patrick Roy played 63 games with 2.18 GAA and .920%. Brodeur played 56 games 2.45 and .903%. Hasek in his early 40s was still getting very close to 2.00 GAA and a great save percentage.
Behind him we still have Talbot. I expect him to be ok being a backup for the next couple of years, then we'll see.

I'm not saying draft to help Hartford in the short term. The fact that the Rangers need to go out and scrape the bottom of the barrel speaks volumes about the lack of depth in the system. Lundqvist should play the next 8 years and do well without problem, but what if he gets hurt?
LA has Quick and drafted Martin Jones at the time they had Quick and Bernier. Montreal drafted Fucale even though they have Price. Ottawa traded Bishop because they have depth in Andersen and Lehner. It doesn't hurt to have goaltending depth, and to draft and develop goaltending talent in case of something catastrophic like Lundqvist blowing out a knee or having his hips go bad, isn't a bad idea.

Skapski has been getting peppered with shots in juniors, the GAA looks bad over 3, but he is facing like 50 shots a game, will be interesting to see how he develops.

Just put in for season tickets with the baby Flyers in the new arena next year. I'll get to see our world class prospects 5 times a year live.
look at the depth the Ducks have with Andersson, Hillier, Fasth along with their prospect depth. Rangers need depth in goal like that. not a bunch of maybes, that most likely wont reach higher than the AHL level..
im glad im not the only fan that thinks that this is a problem because at some point it can be.. rangers dont want their young AHL prospects in a losing environment

I agree another good AHL Goalie is a must...but on the flip side, look at the Scrivens trade. Bernier trade. Goalies just don't have a ton of trade value. For a number of reasons. It would be nice but it really is not the best investment in terms of high draft picks.

Hard to say. Rangers have a lot of holes to fill--not just goalie at the moment. Anyone they draft this summer is not likely to play in Hartford next year. Missiaen sucks--Stajcer has not proven to be much better. Malcolm might be okay with more time and experience. Skapski??????
The one thing about the AHL contract guys Grumet-Morris and LeNeveu is they've been around a long time and are legit at that level. If they get decent support they'll do okay.
Rangers can use another young NHL prospect in net at the AHL level. what if Talbot does not repeat this year? what if one of the goalies gets hurt long term?? not much depth in net can hurt this franchise, especially for the younger players in the AHL.. Wolfpack is the Bluejackets of AHL with their losing mentality this year..

Two of the three goaltenders you cited were undrafted. Anderson was picked up at the tail end of the third round, but even that was after re-entering the draft once the Canes failed to sign him after drafting him in the 7th round. Our two goaltenders were drafted in the 7th round and not at all. We need depth. That doesn't mean it has to be addressed with a high pick. If a guy the scouts are absolutely in love with is available then sure. Draft him. Drafting a goaltender high just because we need depth is a stupid idea, though.
Absolutely, either take one really talented in the first round or gamble on late round and undrafted euro and college prospects. Otherwise you are quick to waste a 2nd round pick on a guy like Anthony Lafleur...

You all realise that if Hank or Talbot get hurt, there is no NHL goalie on the AHL Wolfpack? Grumet-Morris and LeNeveu are signed to AHL deals, next in line would be Missiaen out of the ECHL... that is poor poor management.

i guess planning ahead does not happen for the Rangers management And drafting someone this summer fixes that how? Even if someone like Thatcher Demko fell into our lap he's not going to be ready for at least a few years. I'm sure that's going to be a priority for management in the summer, and that's something that can be addressed relatively easily. Pick up a third-stringer like a Richard Bachman or Michael Leighton on the cheap. Or move a late round pick for a decent young goaltender stuck in a numbers game elsewhere. Or sign one of the rising goaltenders in Europe like Anaheim did with Fasth or Vancouver did with Eriksson.

If either get hurt they sign either Grumet-Morris or LeNeveu to a 2-way deal. Sure they have to clear waivers, but don't think that would be much of an issue for either of them.

Planning ahead is exactly what NYR management did. They signed Missiaen and Talbot as FAs and used a 5th rounder on Stajcer. Talbot is the one that rose to the top, and was the goaltender in waiting in case something happened to Hank or Biron. Well, something happened to Biron, and Talbot was ready. Now they have that hole temporarily and I'm sure it's going to be filled in the summer. You're still not explaining how drafting a goaltender in one of the first few rounds in late June, when the season is over, would address the fact that this season they're a bit thin.
i never meant for this year alone. the Rangers also need depth for the future... that is the problem, not only this year in the AHL but also in a few years as well. and why not just draft a goalie from europe maybe that player can come right over to north america and play in the AHL.. finland and sweden has had developed some good goalies as of late. Rangers management should look overseas if they really need a goalie in the AHL in the near year or 2.

but they have been doing that for years and the only good one that they happened to get was Cam Talbot, all of the other FA or projects that became part of this organization has not done much at the NHL level. that shows lack of depth in the Rangers organization in net.. Canucks were able to deal Schneider because of the depth in goalie that they have, and they were able to get a 1st round pick. too bad Rangers dont have the goaltending depth to make such a trade.
What the hell are you talking about? They literally drafted the best goaltender of this decade with a 7th round pick. They traded a 5th for Chad Johnson, and he'd still be here if not for Biron and Lundqvist being such a concrete duo and Talbot rising. Talbot was an undrafted FA.
Schneider is one example. Congratulations. Good job on that. You can find one example of probably anything in the world. Want another example? Al Montoya. Drafted 6th overall, traded for Freddie Sjostrom and scraps. Or how about Dan Blackburn? They got nothing out of it because of injuries. How about the Islanders using a 2nd and 3rd on two goaltenders in 2009 who are pretty much worthless on the trade market now? Brygalov was drafted 44th overall and Anaheim let him go via waivers because there was no market for him. The Oilers drafted Dubnyk 14th overall and moved him for Matt ****ing Hendricks.
Or we can do the reverse. Halak was drafted in the 9th round. Montreal spun that into Lars Eller and Ian Schultz. Bobrovsky went undrafted and Philadelphia picked him up, then eventually shipped him off for a second and two fourth rounders.
You're going to have to come up with a better argument than, "well this one time it worked out!!!"
And finally, okay, let's say you're right and that the late picks/FAs haven't worked out. Dan Blackburn. Al Montoya. Antoine LaFleur. Neither have the high draft picks. Seems to me they've gotten similar value out of the FAs and late picks.
Kings drafted Quick who was a 3rd round in 2005... the goalies drafted before Quick were Price, Rask, Plante, Frazee, Pavelec, Pier-Olivier Pelletier, Westblom, in 2005..
