I loved Risto beating his chest after the winner. If Darcy were still in Buffalo, Risto would more than likely still be in Western NY and beating his head against a wall.

Great for the kid's development.

While great for Risto... Saying Darcy wouldn't have released him for WJC is a stretch and speculation at best.... As for his development playing against the best players in the world is never a bad thing unless you clearly don't belong.

bah.. whoever they said should've been drafted instead of Risto, maybe Wennberg or Nichushkin?

Lindholm would be the most relevant here. He was drafted 3 spots before Risto but we had the chance to trade up and get him. Played for Sweden but not particularly well. Nichushkin is definitely one as well. The jury's still out on him to be honest, as he's looking quite good in the NHL. I don't think anyone would have taken Wennberg at #8.

A little off topic, but I really don't think the jury is out on nich. He's going to be a stud and practically already is.

I'm glad we drafted the way we did though, IF we had done it differently I would have wanted nich and not bother moving up.

When I say the jury is still out, I mean as to whether we should have drafted him over Risto. Risto is the guy I wanted at #8 (assuming Lindholm didn't fall, in which case it'd have been a toss-up), and Nichushkin is the one guy I really didn't want. I can see I was wrong enough to the point where I'd certainly entertain taking Nichushkin at #8 if we did a do-over, though I think I'd still take Risto. Nichushkin is obviously a good NHLer, but the jury is still out if he's going to be an elite top line winger or just a good top 6 winger, imo. Since I believe Risto is gonna be a top-pairing guy, I'd still take him for the time being. If Nichushkin is definitely going to be an elite winger, that makes things more interesting.

Can risto play in Sochi?

Even if he can or can't, would he crack Finnish roster?

He certainly is eligible if that's what your first question is asking. As to whether he'd crack the roster or not, I think he'd have to have a hell of a run when he returns to the Amerks. I don't think he has much chance.

I like our draft this year. Potentially 2 huge 25 min per game d-men who play even PK and PP. Gotta have a solid Defense. Now we gotta get some snipers.

What impressed me was Ristolainen's willingness to take his team on his shoulders in overtime. Finland doesn't win without Soros' stellar goaltending in regulation, but Risto's rushes in OT were thrilling.

The Sabres have two stud defensemen coming up through the ranks in Risto and Zadorov.
