2007 Born for the 2023 Draft

How does Ivankovic compare to Ben Gaudreau at the same age?
elite prospects has him a 6'0, which still isn't all that big. Gaudreau seems to have been good, but not sure he lived up to the "best OHL goalie prospect in a decade" hype. To take this guy top 10, he'd have to be at least on that level to be worth a gamble.
I haven't seen the kid play once I'm just really curious to see how he does because he's only 5'10 according to the OHL video on him.

That's incredibly small for today's goalies. Obviously still could be in for a growth spurt, but taking a G RD1 is always scary let alone one that small.

Re: Ivankovic vs Gaudreau.

Ivankovic is the better goalie at the same age in my opinion. He sees the puck better and has some of the best athleticism and puck handling abilities from any goalie I have seen at this age in Ontario. His father who is a former OHL goalie stands at 6’4”, so this should alleviate any concerns about height moving forward- that 5’10” figure is from the beginning of the season. I’d wager he is around 6’ now. If he comes in around 6’3” and keeps the athleticism and mobility, I reckon he has the frame to be within the Goldilocks zone of the best goalies in todays NHL. He has shown up in big games at such a young age, kid has ice in his veins. One of the more projectable goalies we’ve seen enter the OHL in a while.

Curious....how many OHL teams hold a "Draft Party" for their fans to get together and watch the draft? Complete with GM visits to explain the picks?

Not aware of any Kitchener draft party, but after each selection, they do a pretty good job of doing some quick interview clips of McKenzie, or the scout that covers the area in which the draft pick was selected. These clips are usually up on the Ranger website within a short while after respective picks. As a Ranger fan that's about all you can ask for, since most have no idea what to expect from these kids.

I wish we did to be honest. Erie is for sure but thats to be expected with the first overall.
Their event tonight is private. Friday night they have a watch party set up downtown with a local brewery. While I don’t think their GM will be there, Stan Butler is supposed to make an appearance

Thanks for your contribution Liam.

About 25 years ago, I too had an interest in learning the ropes and the possibility of doing some scouting down the road. I had attended year-end tournaments a few years in a row to try to get a taste for it. I knew after awhile though that I wasn't cut out for it. So I am grateful that there are so many on this board that are generous with their time spent attending games and passing on their information.

still waiting for the hounds GM to explain some of his picks the last few drafts to be honest lol

If the Hounds manage to land Jacob Cloutier, then drafting Justin in the first was worth it. It's not that I don't like Justin or think he's a bad player, it's that I don't think he turned into a first rounder, but to be fair he was 2nd last pick in a draft that was done essentially blind. He's essentially a 2nd rounder.

But who else? Who would you have rather the Hounds pick there if you were to redraft?

The Brown selection is too early to say for sure. He could turn into something special still. I know he has strong skating and a unique style similar to Stranges but did not utilize it at all last year. I think a full year in the league despite not having a ton of stats was huge for Brown. Adjust to the size and speed and fix it over the summer.

Matier > Holmes

That was an epic ball drop and there's no excuse... the kid literally lived here! the entire 2019 draft was a disaster really.

in 2020 Connor Toms in the 3rd was a head scratcher. Rutger McGroarty was a waste of a pick in a year we didn't have a 2nd rounder.

Ethan Montroy was a swing and a miss.

I could go on! In my opinion our last solid draft was 2018.

I never liked Holmes at all but they aren't actually too far off in comparisons. Matier maybe possess more offensive threats but Holmes to everyone but Soo fans, was an exceptional defenseman. Hounds could have had Del Monte, Stillman, Arcuri, instead if Matier. They wanted a dman. All 3 of those players went in the 2nd round. When it comes to Holmes vs Matier though, meh. They're both NHL drafted players. 1 in 4th 1 on 5th so there isn't that big gap between them where Jack developed into a 1st or 2nd round pick or some elite Dman.

That's one small example but in the grand scheme of things they haven't done that bad drafting. They've just made poor choices when it comes to buying instead of selling.

I would say the biggest failure of a pick for the Hounds in the last 3 years was Marco Mignosa in the 2nd round. He managed to work his way off the NHL draft rankings. That 2021 draft is kind of a wash.

i disagree. matier was just voted top defensive D no? and was a member of team canada?
holmes never panned out and wasn't even a top pairing guy in the OHL.

take a quick peak at our 2018 draft compared to every draft since.

the change in scouting staff is obvious as night and day.

Feel free to comment

Couple good lists there. On the goalies, bump Gravelle and Medvedev up to possibly 3 and 4 imo. Gisuti Rebels is another good one, but size will be an issue. Donohue trending well after his first year in the OMHA.

Romano ahead of O'Brien given O'Brien's OHL Cup is a discussion point. I know this will generate some arguments, but so is McFadden vs Griffin. McFadden produced similar'ish numbers to Griffin and produced more against better competition than Griffin did.

Someone presented the Sam Gagner situation re Moore and Katzin and Gagner's involvement with the Marlies. Could be an interesting draft day twist. Play one year in the USHL and then come to the OHL.

Beauchesne ahead of Cameron imo due to offensive upside and skating.

There is a bit of OHL Cup bias in some, but I understand. Kostuch performed very well on the big stage.

Ya... Kostuch pretty much just made a huge jump from late 2-3 round to 1 round but I feel there is lots of potential. On the otherside could just be another big name at the ohl cup that fails at the next level. Well just have to wait and see

Ya most I watched of some of the GTHL players were from OHL Cup

Like we have all been speculating about for a while, shoutout to @OHL4Life for voicing this information on here first - even though it got taken down for “speculation“ even though he is probably the most connected guy on these boards.

I have been hearing Griffin to Oshawa at 6 also. but They do like a couple of names there - don’t believe that pick is set in stone, yet.
