Between the two real games and his preseason time, Smith has had an absolute nightmare.

He's been fighting the puck something awful. Losing it in his skates a lot, then he's trying to be too aggressive positionally, etc. Needs to settle down and stop trying to get ahead of himself

Lundqvist...man, he's gotta make some of those saves. I think his reflexes are going which is pretty bad

McDonagh-Skjei. That needs to be the top pairing.

Figure it out from there. Shattenkirk is money offensively, maybe pair him with Staal? I don't know, at least an attempt.

That can be pairing two, and then Smith-DeAngelo for pairing three.

After this game, get Holden back in there for DeAngelo, see how it goes. We need to be more solid defensively, not many options to take out.

I now the gaffes by the d-men are there but it seems the puck control is just awful by the Rangers.

oh yeah the forward to forward passes have been terrible and guys acting like they don't know where their teammates are, aren't expecting passes, bad puck support for the defense

can't really start the season and let yourself just slowly warm up...teams are hitting the ground running. Leafs aren't going to wait for the Rangers to just settle in. You gotta be ready from the start

And is it just me or is the linesman being a total dick tonight with the drops

Also like zero credit to the Leafs in here. They are going to do this to a lot of teams this year.

Yeah, they were all over us like a cheap suit, they forced turnovers with relentless forcheck pressure. We certainly helped them with some poor puck handling, but they had no problem pressuring us into mistakes.

I posted it towards the end of pre-season and earlier today about d-zone structure and this squad being tough to watch.

I know it's game 2, but.... if they don't make adjustments... this is going to be the product they put out there. Gonna be tough for JR to put a positive spin on the obvious.

On Ruffy. I like the fact that they got a guy to press AV from getting complacent.... but they put the worst defensive coach in the league for the last few years in charge of defense...

I mean seriously... why keep trying things that clearly don't work?

Damn, that was some period...

Defence was all over the place, just sloppy passing everywhere and no puck support. Smith continues to have the same questions marks over him that he had for most of last season.

The Leafs are fast; we are slow when it comes to moving the puck, both in terms of speed of the pass and decision making. We're also missing a lot of passes (not enough pre-season?).

Miller's goal was nice on about our only good O-zone shift.
It's so good seeing a PP point man who can get a shot through traffic

I don't get why you guys are getting all upset. Did you really expect a winning season with a 35 year old goalie and no first line center? The best thing that can happen to this franchise is tanking for picks. Haven't had any elite prospects in forever.

The Leafs are well coached and deep. Their players buy in, work hard, stick to their structure, funnel pucks and bodies to the net every time they get the chance.

Their D stays aligned in all zones, and their forwards backcheck and drive the net.

You can't say that about the Rangers.

Yep, everyone's fumbling the puck badly and we seem to have no communication, not only does the defense have to wake up but so does the offense

they really shouldn't be slow moving the puck but guys are playing like they don't know where their linemates are at all.
