I'm developing a theory about this........ Some players are always getting better while others are getting worse. Somehow, more Sabres have regressed at the same time than anyone expected - including the GM and coach.
Most of the team has gone south at the same time and it's apparent we don't have the talent we thought we had.
It's time to have a fire sale.........
I'm not even sure it's regressing. The guys coming up from the AHL and that were drafted have simply not been able to replace the guys that either got old (you can go back to 05-06 Numminen here as well as Rivet...Regier was old when he started) or left in free agency/trades (Lydman/Talliner/Campbell)
Myers had a great 1st half of a season in 09/10 with a very fluid, mobile defenseman in Tallinder, but once the league figured out he could rush the puck, he hasn't been the same. That's not so much regressing as the league figuring you out.
Right now we have 4 established top 9 NHL wingers (Ott, Stafford, Pominville, Vanek), 0 established top 3 centers, and MAYBE 3 NHL established top 4 defensemen (and no #1). **** we've been using a career #7 in the top 4, and a guy who's clearly aged to the point of ideally being a #7 (Regher). It's awful back there.
That's just not good enough as a roster.
