Prospect Info: 17OA: Axel Sandin Pellikka

to be fair not playing Edvinsson probably does make ASP a better prospect so it's pretty related

maybe once the Wings see him go do well on some other team they'll actually be willing to play ASP down the line

But than again, when Edvinsson starts playing he will not be a prospect anymore.

Sorry, not sure if this is the right thread for this...
Skelleftea lost 2-0 today. ASP had 3 shots and was -1

I thought the Mazur thread was about the squirrel.
any thread can be about a squirrel with the right looks

Post season games do not count against the count (example, Ken Dryden) but unless we absolutely have too, I cannot see playing him in the Wings playoff games, but never say never! :)

Win the Calder Cup, get the call, play in the Stanley Cup Finals. Wonder if that has ever been done before?

#5 – Three AHL Teams Have Won the Calder Cup the Same Year Their NHL Affiliate Won the Stanley Cup

The Calder Cup playoffs aren’t the only thing hockey fans have to look forward to. Many people tune into the Stanley Cup playoffs each year. Playoffs have been especially exciting for some fans for a handful of years. There have been three times in Calder Cup history that the AHL champion won the Calder Cup at the same time their NHL affiliate team won the Stanley Cup. The Nova Scotia Voyageurs won the Calder Cup in 1976 and 1977, coinciding with the Montreal Canadiens winning the Stanley Cup. The Albany River Rats then won the Calder Cup in 1995, while the New Jersey Devils won the Stanley Cup the same year.

the wording here is hilarious

No, squirrels were mentioned in the Danielson thread if you care to check, lol.

Also, I'm pretty sure the Mazur thread is about rats, because every undersized prospect will eventually turn into Rat Face. Apparently the logic is that if a scum like Marchand can become a NHLer, then any undersized prospect can do the same.

I'll do my best to drag the discussion back to the topic. I'll fail, but it's this or work.

2. Axel Sandin Pellikka, RHD, 18 (Skelleftea AIK)

Sandin Pellikka was utterly dominant at the J20 level last season, played big minutes when things mattered most as an underager at the world juniors (including in three overtimes), looked himself in the SHL, and was in the conversation as the best defenseman in the tournament at U18 worlds in Switzerland for my money. This season, he followed that up with a goal-scoring rate into the Christmas in the SHL that was on pace to put together one of the league’s best-ever offensive seasons from an under-19 defenseman. And while he didn’t dominate his second world juniors, he got better as the tournament went on and became a real go-to guy for the silver medal-winning hosts while still being their youngest D for the second year in a row (hard to believe) with another year of tournament eligibility for the 2025 world juniors in Ottawa. He missed four weeks after the world juniors due to injury and his minutes have been more in the 14-17 minute range in the SHL since he returned instead of the 19-21 minutes he was regularly playing prior to getting hurt, but he has been coming and had a three-point night last week.

Sandin Pellikka is an individually talented, competitive 5-foot-11 defenseman with natural scoring instincts and the tools to execute. He’s got really good edges and mobility and has shown improved speed in straight lines to pull away from chasers (with more room for growth there still). He walks the line to get shots through at a high level, wants the puck in the offensive zone and has the skill and shot to make things happen when teammates find him off the point or as the trailer off the rush (which he often activates into). He keeps his head up in the neutral and defensive zones and is a confident puck carrier on exits and entries. Though he’s not big, he’s athletic and he plays hard and physical and engages in battles in the defensive zone with some sneaky strength. He’s got a good stick. He does a good job maintaining gaps and matching opposing forwards step for step skating backward, and times his close-outs and pinches effectively. He can really shoot it with a pinpoint accurate shot, a wrister that comes off hard — and an eagerness to pucks on net from the point. There are times when he can wait too long to make his decisions and I wouldn’t call him super creative, but he makes good choices more often than he’s careless and he has progressed really rapidly. He’s got a chance to be an impactful, maybe even high-end offensive defenseman and defensively-capable second-pairing one.

When he’s on, he can control the game in all three zones.

Axel Sandin Pellikka a ‘big, big talent’ for Skellefteå, Sweden, and soon the Red Wings

Ask Skellefteå general manager Erik Forssell and he’ll go straight to the point, too.

“Axel is very good,” Forssell will say. “His ceiling is really high. His ceiling is basically like he could be one of the best players in the world. There’s a long way to go to become that but he has all of those tools.”

The Daily: Red Wings Have Two on Top Prospect List; Trade Talk

Grand Rapids Griffins defenseman Simon Edvinsson, generally considered Detroit’s top prospect, was ranked 25th. Defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka was listed at No. 8. Sandin Pellerin was drafted with the 17th pick last summer and has played remarkably well.

Skelleftea player Sandin Pellikka received an “A” grade from Button, meaning he projects to be a top pairing defenseman, while Edvinsson has a B grade. His projection would be as a top 4 defenseman. Edvinsson has been as high as No 3 on a previous year’s Button list.

Edvinsson is closer to the NHL than Sandin Pellikka, but Button undoubtedly sees a higher ceiling for Sandin Pellikka.

I know it's off topic, but something to watch - since he's came back from injury his ice time is down and it doesn't look like he's getting PP time. Not shockingly, his production has suffered -3 points in 10 games (1 goal).

Not sure if he's still not 100%?

It's crunch time in the SHL and he's 18 years old. The SHL is a hard league to get ice time in if you are under 25, it seems, no matter how skilled you are.

He lost his PP job while injured and Skellefteå has the best PP in the world so they’ve had no reason to change anything and put ASP back there.

Also 3+2 = 5 points at his 10 Champions Hockey League games. Think you can count those to his pro league total...

49 games, 13 goals, 10 assists = 23 points.

U20 WJC, 7 games 2+4 = 6 points.
U20 other, 15 games, 5+5=10 points
