Prospect Info: 17OA: Axel Sandin Pellikka

I have unreasonable expectations of ASP but he will likely require a full year in the AHL. I wouldn't be surprised to see him not play an NHL game until 25-26 and I'm ok with that.

With the way he plays, the adjustment to NA ice is going to be his biggest barrier to success and I could see that one aspect being make-or-break for him.

I actually have optimism about him translating his game to the NHL because a lot of the little things he does well are quick and in tight space. Some of his best skills are operated in tight pockets.

I do think he will need an adjustment period to acclimate his game and mainly handling AHL/NHL forecheck but I don't really have concern whether or not he will be successful.

2x years in GR is my guess unless he puts up ridiculous numbers

I wouldn't mind him being in the AHL next year but to be honest I actually kinda think ASP should play in Sweden another year first

as great a season as he had for his age I think it's a little easy to forget that he was actually 5th among Defensemen on his team in ice time per game, he wasn't far behind the #2-4 guys but still I think another year over there in a bigger role would be a good thing

Datsyuk and Zetterberg have never played in AHL,no need him to go there also. ASP has one more year in SHL. If he dominate next season , you could bring 20 years old straight to Detroit, if not, he could spend extra year in SHL.

Dats and Z came over to NHL as 22-23 year olds.

It's like the Gostisbehere role.

5th defenceman, easiest assignments. But 1st PP.

Top4 at next season, most probably.

I agree with him staying in the SEL again next season, then a full year in GR.

Simon moves up. Well he is already up. Next season, I can see the Wings giving either Wallinder or Johansson a shot.

Seider - Walman
Edvinsson - Chiarot
Maata - Wallinder
Petry

1st call up Johansson

Let Ghost go and buy out Holl.

I think you have to flip Wallinder and Johansson; the latter no longer being waiver exempt after this season, I believe.

What's the realistic expectation of him to hit the NHL? I'd be curious to see if he comes over to NA next year to play. If he did he would have a shot to crack the team..Why another year in the SHL? The kid was pretty unreal and what does he have left to prove or develop over there? At least bring him over to get use to the ice and game speed over here and who knows he could end up like Raymond and make it opening day and never look back. 5'11" and 181lbs could still sprout another inch or 2 and will probably pit on a few pounds when he turns pro.

2-3 years. ASP gets pushed away too easily and skating needs work, Europe is the best place for ASP next season. SHL, CHL, U20 Worlds and maybe even some men's national team games too, lot of games to play next season. There is no reason to rush him, during this season ASP was playing the second fiddle to Pudas. When ASP beats him for the job, then he is really ready.

Ray made the team because Vrana got injured, it would require at least 3 d-men to be injured at the start of next season in order to ASP be in opening day roster + dominant camp. And ASP is a pro already, SHL is a pro league.

This seems relatively out of character for us at this point. Seider was drafted and brought over to the AHL for his D+1. Raymond played SHL for D+1 and was brought over for his D+2, happened to stick in the NHL. Edvinsson played SHL for D+1 and was brought over for his D+2. Kasper played SHL for D+1 and was brought over for his D+2.

We have a bit of a evidence or a theme that the Wings like getting their European first round talent to America pretty quick. In Seider's case, he was playing in a lesser league with no ties to a SHL organization, so he came over immediately. All the other ones basically were given a year of development in a familiar environment with new developmental eyes on them from afar, and then make the jump and start the real ramp up to NHL caliber play.

ASP's season was every bit as good as any of the other SHL D+1 seasons, so I would find it hard to believe that he suddenly becomes the one we handle differently.

Two questions.. If ASP played in Detroit next season. Do you think he would be worse defensively then Gostisbehere? and this one is a little odd but do you think he would be better on the power play then Perron? I'm picturing ASP taking those little mini one timers Perron takes but having a lot more mustard behind them.

I suspect the local RW Swedish folks will say when it is time to bring him over, they both seem to know a thing or two about playing defense in the NHL, he is likely to be a great one, but I don't see a need to rush him as much as I want to see him suit up ASaP.

Exactly. I don't think he needs another year in the SHL like mentioned it is a pro league with adult players and he's exceeded expectations. That being said it's still unlikely but it has been done. Seider, Raymond, Ed have all been in similar situations no reason why he'd be any different..

Pretty sure ASP is an upgrade. Sign another veteran shut down dman a legit top 4 guy. You'd have Seider and a new vet to play and mentor Ed and ASP. All 3 of those guys can play big minutes as well.

Seider Ed ASP and a newcomer with Walman and Chairot would be a pretty nasty defense.. Still have some other good prospects to to either work in or dangle for a trade

Don't really get why you are pushing back on the quote you are posting here. Ultimately the development path for every player is going to be different, and I agree with Santos that I think there is 0 reason to rush ASP. Maybe he comes to America next year, and plays in Grand Rapids. I'm all for that. I don't think he would be ready for NHL ready until at least the following season though.

I don't think we should do that, so moot point as far as I'm concerned. (Unless he has a huge summer of development in the gym, or something like that.)

Yes. By a lot. Like, a lot a lot

Maybe. His skillset does seem specialized for the PP and if that was the sole concern and he never touched the ice otherwise, I think he could help upgrade the PP (obviously this would hurt his development in the other areas and we should not do this)

There's no need to rush ASP, but equally there's no need to slow roll him either. I'd be disappointed if he wasnt in Grand Rapids next season.

He could easily replace Gost , but why rush. We have AJo , Kasper , Mazur and of course Berggren ahead of him. It will be too many I'm experienced players for next year

Not saying rush him but if he proves he's ready why even consider slowing it down. Seider isn't a rookie anymore and can hold his own, he faces the toughest matchups of all defenseman. Ed is pretty technically gonna be a rookie but has played pro for going on what 3 years next year. The benefit of bringing him in would be having him and Ed on ELC's, Yzerman could then bring in another Vet dman to mentor then you have Seider and A new guy to mentor ASP and ED. We'd still have Walman and Chairot to move around if need be as well.

If he can play why not let him play and try to take advantage of as many ELC as they can?
