Prospect Info: 17OA: Axel Sandin Pellikka

I really like ASP. He has great offensive instincts and doesn't appear to be a total sieve defensively, which is quite often the case with offensive dman. With that said he is still a boom/bust type of prospect. He's either going to be an offensive dynamo at the NHL level or likely bust entirely.

Ed is a way safer prospect and his overall impact on the game will likely be equal to or greater than ASPs. 6'7 dman that can skate and have good if not great offensive instinct are usually 10+ year players. ASP would have to work his way into a Hughes, Makar, Fox level to be as equal impact and that's a huge ask of any player.

I think ASP is a better prospect than Edvinsson. It's also hard to compare them both, since they play different styles.

That definitely tracks...

Very much so. I'm not hiding the fact how amazing Hronek is at hockey and saving lives.

I also said "It's also hard to compare them both, since they play different styles."

I think ASP is a better prospect, right now. I don't know who will be the better player. I'm more excited by ASP, though.
You should be a lot more excited about a player with the size and tools of Edvinsson. It’s a very rare thing to have in your pipeline.

ASP will, hopefully, give this team a dimension it hasn't had since Lidstrom which is a defender on the point who can accurately and powerfully rip the puck without embarrassing themselves on the other end of the rink.

ASP doesn't have a single weakness in his game. His worst attributes are still above average for a defenseman, and his high vo2 scores point to a guy who is going to be able to consistently play 23 minutes a night. His skating is elite. He's a gym rat and a consummate athlete who's pastimes are all sports, in some form or another. His skating is elite. This isn't a guy who is going to leave the rink sitting around playing Fortnite. He's probably going to end up 6' and almost 200 pounds so knocking him for size is a reach.

From one report, and from what I've seen of him: "As a matter of fact, Tony Ferrari even made the claim that, 'He may be the best passer of any defenseman in this draft.'"

That's a recipe for a first pair quality defenseman.

Edvinsson is a guy with a ton of tools who is building his toolbox. ASP already has the toolbox and most of the tools. ASP has less chance of hitting his max potential but if he does he's going to incredible.

Having Seider on pair one and Edvinsson-ASP on pair two is going to be a nightmare for opposing teams. The only problem is they may all end up 10+ million dollar players.

Ok... so you weren't lying about your high expectations of ASP

Is his skating really "elite"? I don't see that in the SHL highlights. By elite, I mean Makar level, not "above average for a prospect" which seems to be a common use of that term here.

It's usually me that knocks prospects for size, but he's got the attributes to compensate for it, so I haven't gone there with ASP. If he's at least an above average NHL skater, he'll be a player to watch. For reference, Quinn is 180lbs, and Hronek is 190 (not 200 as someone said earlier)/

A little bit. I did watch youtube videos of him before the draft, watched more once we drafted himand have tuned into a few Skelleftea games and watched the World Juniors.

I guess I'll say I don't put that much stock in being a "PP QB" at lower levels. So as he's making decisions who to pass to on the PP and getting assists based on that, I don't particularly project to a high level NHL player.

Passing, vision, and IQ at 5 on 5 are much more important to me, and I haven't seen those as stand out traits in my mind. I guess I would describe it as getting a bit too tunnel visioned on his first option and might force it or be slow to move to option B or C.

Yep. Love his shot. Can do wrist shots, slap shots, and one-timers all effortlessly which leads to high accuracy on high velocity shots.

But no, I am not claiming to be an expert on him or telling anyone that they are wrong. I am not trying to say he'll be a bust. Just not as high on him as others and this is just my opinion in his very young career,
Agreed, only a few of us liked it at draft. Ioved it!!
A few pundits had him top 10.!!!??

Hronek is about the same as he was here before he got traded. Still a pretty good defender, but getting to play with Hughes has elevated his rep, not necessarily his play. Seen enough of the highlights from Van this season and I see the same player he was here. Lots of good nights and plays, and lots of times where you wonder who he is supposed to be covering. I was and still am a Hronek fan, but I don't believe he is playing a lot better than his final Detroit season.
I loved hronek, great player!!! His numbers aren't that much better(about the same) in Vancouver!! Steve just didn't want to pay him!!!!

It’s silly to say it’s hard to compare them. They are hockey players that play the position of defense. They are easy to compare. It’s like people saying you can’t compare apples to oranges…of course you can.

ASP has elite skating traits, particularly his 4 way mobility and edge work. His top speed is not quite yet elite but he picks up speed with little effort. With time in the gym and more development I believe he will get there.

Lol at saying ASP’s skating is elite. McDavid, MacKinnon, and Makar are elite skaters. ASP is not there.
lol, what was their skating like at 18 years old? You can't really compare established prime NHLers to D+1 kids.

Multiple scouts have described his skating as elite.

Cale Makar’s skating was always special, that’s the only way you go top 5 at his size while playing Junior A hockey.
