Prospect Info: #166 Overall, LW Josh Filmon, Swift Current WHL

Was looking at the Devils prospects and I must say for a guy that didn't get a lot of mentions around here this year Josh Filmon did pretty great this season and still doing great in the playoffs.

didn't his focus change to defensive game, or was that a diff prospect

I thought the issue was that he was moved to C for a while.

The brain fog won’t help here but I thought his skating was fine.

Unfortunately I’m out of town and won’t catch Development Camp this year.

I was happy to hear that he killed penalties and working on other aspects of his game last season.

Ugh, your development camp notes were always so helpful. Hopefully brain fog is transient and nothing serious. Stay well.

Filmon is doing exactly what everyone wanted him to do last season, didn't put up as much points as the season before but worked on becoming a more complete player. So more PK and better in the defensive zone. He's also trying to fill out his body. Really wants to have a good camp and make the team but is okay with getting some guidance and heading down to Utica. He's practicing in Winnipeg with Seth Jarvis and Cody Glass.

Posted this in the main discussion thread but seeing as people were questioning his last season I posted it here. I'm sure there is someway for people to check his defensive stats this year and compare it to the previous season but I aint doing that shit.

been a minute since we touched this thread lol

i dont really scout echl hockey (naturally...) but ive wondered what filmon has been up to. 32pt in 59gp in this league is straight garbage and his outlook seems to be collapsing as quickly as it spiked from DY to D+1, but i figured i should find out for myself. doing this one a little differently, i found a stream from 2/28 so im going off that game
  • skating not there at all, pace not doing much to compensate either. looks like hes skating in mud off his first couple steps. edges can be wonky. overall pretty weak on his skates, loses balance easily. no real urgency to get to pucks or make a play, lets things come to him. its not that hes outight coasting but he just stops moving his feet and glides to plays a lot. defensive zone presence was near stationary, though, almost like hes setting up for a shot on his own net. no recoverability if he misses on a poke or something
  • lacks one on one skill, both by virtue of his skating and handling. just talked about skating, in terms of hands no real ability to get pucks through defenders. pretty much just skates at them and gets it poked off him. defensive stick work was actually quite good, maybe one of the better elements of his game. good stickchecking, aggressively challenged possession, got touches in to keep pucks moving, etc. just didnt do him any favors with the puck
  • brutal awareness. caught him losing track of the puck numerous times. wasnt always seeing where rebounds went, would zone out while battling for position, etc. slow to react as well, even off simple passes. never felt on top of play
  • did compete physically. he has the build of a stick so it didnt really do much, but i appreciated him trying to power through traffic and fight for space outside the crease. should note that he wasnt trying to box out puck carriers or use the boards to pin guys or anything, so its not like it was the most cerebral application of it. did mix it up a little after the whistle
  • playmaking game was alright. could move pucks well on his forehand. nothing super imaginative outside of a couple behind the back passes off the rush, but what he did opt for was executed well enough. shanked most other attempts (ie most backhand passes). puck game was at its best when his linemate led in transition, sent it his way, and he had space off the entry to work with to either drive the net or send it back over
  • best aspect of his game in major junior was always his shot and outside of maybe one jab on a net front scramble i dont think i saw him use it. i dont even think i saw him really set up that well for an opportunity either. almost exclusively posted up in front of the net for a tip or something when he was in the offensive zone (and not actively on the puck)
liked next to nothing in this viewing. at the end of the day, its only a 6th rounder not tracking well, hardly worth losing sleep over, but i will say im a little disappointed. i always like aggressive trajectories and it was hard to ask for a better D+1. i know his D+2 was down but it still felt like the conversion to C and added emphasis on playmaking accounted for at least some of the drop off. evidently he might just be bad lol
