Think about it. After the first shot the shooter either scores or doesn't score.
So:
1. Score! The opposing team now has to score at least two goals to win the game.
2. Didn't score. The opposing team has to score at least one goal to win the game.
Now although it is true, that if the team doesn't score the slight edge the team had by going first is transferred to the opposing team. However it is still the same edge they would have had if they were allowed to go first.

You are forgetting about variable change. The variables change after every shot. This is probably the best and most basic explanation of what variable change is.Still not seeing it. I mean each team gets, ostensibly, 3 equal chances to score, then an equal chance each after that. The only time they are unequal is when the game cannot be won by scoring on the last chances, but that is not denying the other team the same chance to win the game.
