4-5 seasons is not an insignificant amount if time

If your is the position say that the Flyers are in, ya sure, but us, right here and now, no way in heck.

Even with Lou as we are now, we are not a real cup contender, and yes, i fully understand you can only add 1 piece at a time, but Lou is in a unique situation, the clock is ticking on him and i just don't see the value in say, we get our act together in 2 or 3 years just to have 1 or 2 honest shots at it after that.

Now if we hit big in this coming UFA, then i revisit the Lou issue, and if he is off the market by then, so be it.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
We got waivers! Ha. Here you go: ANA: J Hendry, P Maroom, N Guenin, M Smaby. BUF: J Finley, D Leggio, D Schliestel. CBJ: C Bass, A Joudrey

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
CBJ: R Russell, N Drazenovic. MTL: C Desjardins. Alain Berger on $125 waivers presumably for purposes of mutual contract termination.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
NSH: M Moore. WPG: Ben Maxwell. PIT: S McIntyre, J Zatkoff, B Thiessen. That is all.

Wouldn't mind grabbing Patrick Maroon

I really think we have other guys that can step up soon. Not only that, this is a great draft year. We can use him in the start of the season but when Gardiner comes back from injury, we can trade him.

"Every year is a great draft year. We need to move out every quality NHL player for picks every year."

I'm not understanding the Liles hate..... dude was great pre-concussion, when coincidentally we were still in a PO race.

Why not take a flyer on Brad Thiessen? Former Hobey-Baker finalist. Would give us depth to trade one of our young goalies. Free wallet?

I disagree. He's extremely mobile with the puck and a great skater; the two most important traits for D-men in today's NHL. He's also a great veteran presence in our locker room.

If we didn't have Phaneuf I would name Liles captain, partially because we don't have many great options, but he seems to be taking on a good leadership role with the younger players. He seems genuinely happy to be playing in Toronto, and by all accounts is a stand up guy. Speaks well in interviews and does a lot in the community.

Hell, he even made Komisarek into a useful player in the first 20 games or so last season. That in itself is an amazing accomplishment. He'll be great as a mentor for guys like Gardiner and Rielly. I really hope he plays out his contract in Toronto.

Agree with this, he's well spoken and does seem to enjoy it here (see: extension) from interviews I've heard.

I swear the Leafs fans motto should be "what have you done for me lately".

Liles plays fantastic for the first third of the season and Leafs fans are singing his praises. Then his production drops after he comes back from injury and suddenly he's an overpaid bum.

Having Liles for 4 years at under 4 million dollars is an amazing deal. Look at the money Carle and Wideman got on the free agent market, the Leafs got a huge discount for a useful defenseman.

Liles is a decent player, and a useful contributor. It is most certainly a reality that one of our organizational strengths are PMD, Offensive D guys. I don't see a lineup that has Liles in our future, 2-4 years from now. Reilly, Gardiner and one of Finn, Blacker, Percy, Franson... are likely to be our Offensive guys by then. If we can flip him to help the team in other ways, it should be considered... more assets to move up in the draft if necessary, a good stay at home guy, or part of a package for a #1C or Goalie... I have nothing against him at all, I just see that he isn't around still when the team achieves success.

what a crap waiver list

Yes no one you'd waste a contract position on.

I'm guessing the limit is still 50?

And as far as Liles goes, will people stop with the "hate" bit???!!!!

Just because someone isn't a fan of a player doesn't mean they HATE the guy.

Liles has 66 games and 27 points with the Leafs. Hardly the sign he's going to be a key player after two consecutive seasons with concussions.

Let's hope he remains healthy, and continues his career pace and starts becoming a plus player.

Points while being a consistent minus player is like empty calories. They might taste good while consuming but they aren't doing the body a whole lot of good.

Exactly, never said I hated him. I just think he would be a good trading piece for our future.

Depending which Liles we get he will either be a steal or a overpaid bum.

At the time of the signing, I loved it. Now with our most recent draft, I wish we signed him to a shorter deal.

I don't regret the Liles signing really. Rielly might not be ready for another 3 years, and Gards could majorly regress; you just don't know. So to regret signing him to the term he has because you are making the assumption that his replacements will take over too soon seems a bit foolish.

Kessel looks out of shape, good start.

If they resign this bum, I swear mayne...

Liles is important to the team. Gardiner had a great rookie season, but that's exactly all he had - one rookie season. We've seen year after year players go through a sophomore slump, and Gardiner is still in a developing stage so you can probably expect him to go through slumps and such. When that happens, it's extremely important to have a guy like Liles, who's more experienced and can take the load off of Gardiner since they're both puck moving defenseman. Likewise with Rielly.

There's nothing wrong with having more mobility on defense. In-fact, in today's NHL with how fast the game has gotten, I'd say it's a big benefit to have more than just one offensive defenseman who can distribute the puck. Last season Liles was one of our best players until he got injured, and yes I would say that he was pretty mediocre after he returned, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt considering he was returning from injury and the entire team was in a funk.

Like you said, he's capable of being a top 3 or 4 scorer; you give him what he wants.

I don't see why people think he won't resign....

EDIT: Also, why do people seem to think he's old? Even if we went full rebuild, he's still a young asset that'd be part of the solution.

The **** may hit the fan with Kessel if or when is more accurate when we are in 23rd or 30th at the deadline, and Nonis may go to Kessel and ask ok, we are in rebuild/retool. You in?

After 5 years of this, will Kessel say yep, sure I'm in for another 3-5 year plan or does he say, no boss, I'm 25, in my prime and I want to win now.

Thus why we don't want to get into a year when he is a UFA of whether he may or may not sign. The deadline is probably the best time to move him, if we want a solid return, any later and it gets iffy with the cap going down and with him being in a UFA year.

It's very clear what is coming down the pipe here.

The big decision for Nonis is Phil Kessel, he can't afford to get into a Bob Murray situation next year with Kessel having leverage in becoming a UFA after next season. If I am Kessel I would be probably weighing my options after seeing how the man that brought me to Toronto was let go. He's not Nonis's boy and there have already been whispers that Nonis balked at the Kessel trade but Burke pulled the trigger anyway.

My guess is Kessel will be traded by this summer rather than Leafs risk losing him for nothing, Nonis can't have Kessel not resign and have Hamilton, Knight, Seguin hanging over this organization's head the next decade. The million dollar question or answer is you bet Kessel is upset that Burke was let go.

thumbs up.
