Why is that?
I really think we have other guys that can step up soon. Not only that, this is a great draft year. We can use him in the start of the season but when Gardiner comes back from injury, we can trade him.
Why is that?
4-5 seasons is not an insignificant amount if time
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
We got waivers! Ha. Here you go: ANA: J Hendry, P Maroom, N Guenin, M Smaby. BUF: J Finley, D Leggio, D Schliestel. CBJ: C Bass, A Joudrey

CBJ: R Russell, N Drazenovic. MTL: C Desjardins. Alain Berger on $125 waivers presumably for purposes of mutual contract termination.

"Every year is a great draft year. We need to move out every quality NHL player for picks every year."

Liles isn't really that great. He's a decent player but not one I would care for if we lost him.
I disagree. He's extremely mobile with the puck and a great skater; the two most important traits for D-men in today's NHL. He's also a great veteran presence in our locker room.
If we didn't have Phaneuf I would name Liles captain, partially because we don't have many great options, but he seems to be taking on a good leadership role with the younger players. He seems genuinely happy to be playing in Toronto, and by all accounts is a stand up guy. Speaks well in interviews and does a lot in the community.
Hell, he even made Komisarek into a useful player in the first 20 games or so last season. That in itself is an amazing accomplishment. He'll be great as a mentor for guys like Gardiner and Rielly. I really hope he plays out his contract in Toronto.
Agree with this, he's well spoken and does seem to enjoy it here (see: extension) from interviews I've heard.
what a crap waiver list
what a crap waiver list
Exactly, never said I hated him. I just think he would be a good trading piece for our future.Yes no one you'd waste a contract position on.
I'm guessing the limit is still 50?
And as far as Liles goes, will people stop with the "hate" bit???!!!!
Just because someone isn't a fan of a player doesn't mean they HATE the guy.
Liles has 66 games and 27 points with the Leafs. Hardly the sign he's going to be a key player after two consecutive seasons with concussions.
Let's hope he remains healthy, and continues his career pace and starts becoming a plus player.
Points while being a consistent minus player is like empty calories. They might taste good while consuming but they aren't doing the body a whole lot of good.
Depending which Liles we get he will either be a steal or a overpaid bum.
At the time of the signing, I loved it. Now with our most recent draft, I wish we signed him to a shorter deal.
Like you said, he's capable of being a top 3 or 4 scorer; you give him what he wants.
I don't see why people think he won't resign....
EDIT: Also, why do people seem to think he's old? Even if we went full rebuild, he's still a young asset that'd be part of the solution.
The big decision for Nonis is Phil Kessel, he can't afford to get into a Bob Murray situation next year with Kessel having leverage in becoming a UFA after next season. If I am Kessel I would be probably weighing my options after seeing how the man that brought me to Toronto was let go. He's not Nonis's boy and there have already been whispers that Nonis balked at the Kessel trade but Burke pulled the trigger anyway.
My guess is Kessel will be traded by this summer rather than Leafs risk losing him for nothing, Nonis can't have Kessel not resign and have Hamilton, Knight, Seguin hanging over this organization's head the next decade. The million dollar question or answer is you bet Kessel is upset that Burke was let go.
