Yep. That would give us one of the top prospect pools in the league. If we did that (Minnesota wouldnt IMO), our "rebuild" would be essentially done. No plans for tanking after this, just building on top of that core, and Mackinnon/Rielly/Granlund should all be having an impact as early as next season.

This is why I believe we have to include Gardiner, he's young and could be one of Minnesota's top 4 D instantly this year and beyond. Also a small cap hit, let's see how much Fletcher wants to win. Parise, Koivu, Backstrom, and Suter are all in their primes from 28-34. They are pretty much committed to win this year, if I were Fletcher, a Kessel and Gardiner package would make me think long and hard.

If we took on Heatley's salary, I think Minnesota would be dumb not to consider a move like that.

I really think giving up Gardiner would be a mistake. I understand that package is absolute quality - I would love Granlund on this team. He has so much skill. Dumba would also fit well on our defense with the absence of Schenn, but I really liked what I saw from Gardiner last season. I really think he's gonna be a special player. Seriously, anyone other than Gardiner.

Yeah, no reason to trade Gards. This is all hypothetical anyway, and he isn't going anywhere, so I'm not worried.

With Rielly and Gardiner in or top 2 pairings, there will hardly be a team in the league who can rush the puck out of their zone like we could.

I understand it is always hard to give up on a young player that showed so much last year, I felt that way when we dealt Wendel Clark. Sometimes being emotionally attached is the toughest thing being a fan. I just know if a deal came up like this, it would be wrong to turn it down, as much as it hurts to lose a kid like Jake Gardiner.

Gardiner is good. But from his draft alone, Doughty, Pietrangelo, Karlsson, Myers, MDZ, And Carlson are all definitely better than Gardiner at the present time. Schultz and Bogosian probably are, and then Voynov, Hamonic, etc aree pretty similar.

Look at all D aged 22 or younger, and consider where Gardiner realistically ranks among them. Then consider all other top D aged 23-30 who will also be around for a long time and include them in that ranking.

Considering this trade proposal even includes Dumba coming back in it, + Granlund (widely considered a top 5 or so prospect in the world), Coyle (better prospect than Kadri) + a 1st, i dont think you should get held up by Gardiner. Gardiner is a nice young player to have, but at the end of the day he gets overrated around here quite a bit.

lots of talk about this TOR-MIN trade.. is this a rumour, or just someone proposal? just curious

I see no reason to trade Gardiner right now. No reason whatsoever.

Not even if Chuck Fletcher insisted we include him in a package if he is to give up on Granund? Hypothetically.

This is not a 2nd tier prospect, we all agree on this. This is one of the best prospects heading into the NHL. We have to understand where we are with Kessel this year, or more importantly next year.

If this was next year, we may not even get 1/2 the package of a Dumba and Granlund with Kessel becoming a UFA the following summer.

What other defenseman from his draft are doing isn't relevant at all. I don't care how good Doughty is. What's important is how Gardiner is playing for the Leafs. And Doughty, Karlsson, Myers, Del Zotto, Carlson have all had a few years in the NHL. Gardiner was kept in the minors by the Anaheim organization and now with the Leafs he's been given a chance at what seems like the appropriate time of his career - and he's been great. Rankings and comparisons are bogus. How valuable Gardiner is to the Leafs is all that matters.

If we move Kessel, I doubt Lupul would want to re-sign.

Trading Kessel and Lupul could bring back a few high-end prospects and 1st round picks that could really help us do a proper full rebuild. There is a lot of risk involved though. Kessel and Lupul are proven top line players, while prospects are unproven. Trading them could certainly turn out great for us long-term or it could come back to bite us in the ass.

I'd be surprised if Nonis takes an approach like this. I expect he will try to keep the good young pieces we have now and just build on what we have.

Just take out gardiner an dumba from the deal.

If we were to trade Kessel I think St. Louis would be more realistic candidate. They have lots of depth on the NHL team and among their prospects but lack a real game-breaker.

More hypothetical, but the reality is Nonis will likely be doing the exact thought process as we are in this thread as we get closer to the deadline if we are out of it. The Kessel should he stay or should he go talk will heighten, and similar packages will be discussed.

Gardiner is a stud, and it has always much easier to draft a top end forward than it is to get a solid D-man. I like Granlund, and wouldn't be opposed to consider a trade after this season - but do that trade right now? No way. I want to see Granlund play in the NHL first, but that's just me.

Nonis would lose the leverage of the upcoming playoffs and trade deadline if he waits until the end of the season. Gardiner is a real good young player, he's not my definition of a stud, but he is a great piece to a team that is on the verge of bigger things. Leafs are not on that verge, but a team that is that needs a PMD will likely overpay to acquire him, and that's what makes a GM good, know when to be a seller and when to be a buyer.

Some canucks fan offered schneider kassian and first. Thats something I would consider (i would trade kassian though).

Anyway all this is moot point. I dont think granlund is on the table, hes slated to be their #2 Center for a long time...
I would rather try to pry away duchene+

You're the guy using his first name.

That was subtle on his part.

Too much so maybe?

He's a year too late, who's got the hand in this negotiation? 64M cap next year, Murray didn't make it easy for himself, hope we are not talking about this next year with Kessel.

I believe he had to wait until the end of last season because of a rule concerning extension of a player having a multi-year contract.

Section 50.5 (f) (ii) of the previous CBA:

"A Club that wishes to sign a Player to an "extension" of an existing
SPC, may do so only in the final year of such SPC."

What about...

Heatley + Granlund + Dumba

for

Kessel + Gardiner

I think Minny would have to add something small...
