With Boyle, I think it's a similar situation to what Dubinsky dealt with last year: timing. Dubinsky couldn't afford to **** the bed offensively immediately after signing a big money contract with a team that was limited offensively.
Boyle couldn't afford to start out this slow during a lockout-shortened season (where the team also started off slow) when his role heading into the year may have been a little too big (undesirable 3C vs desirable 4C). If he started out average this year, but was poor from games 22-30, he probably doesn't get benched.
