Tell me about it.....I remember I was part of this language exchange group and sometimes we would just speak in English after tiring of trying to learn another language through small talk which is ok. But man a lot of them were younger and the inane small talk was unbearable. I literally just sat there like a Korean..lol

In other news....this is gonna bring nightmares.

Learn Linux and access web services. I think a Raspberry Pi or a mini would probably work, but I'm interested in something with more longevity and adaptability in case my needs change.

Ok, so you know what a Pi is and you want to go bigger but have no need to spend big money.

You can build something and make it as pretty as you want. If you want pure value for the money, the best you're going to do is eBay refurbished shops that buy out offices. No, I'm not joking. What you're describing is basically light office use. Rather than buying mass consumer crap, you can get enterprise desktops for pennies on the dollar and you'll get a warranty from the good sellers. You're not interested in speed for gaming. You want hardware reliability. Those are made for this purpose.

I can help you dig through some of the options when I have more time. I just saddled the dogs up to try to beat this storm.

Incidentally, if it is an enterprise PC and it comes with a server processor, slopping a GPU in will probably create a reliable gaming machine too.

I do not understand processors. They are voodoo, like most things in life. What I know is that putting a Pentium D into a desktop let me run games it shouldn't have been able to run based on raw speed due to how it went about its business, or something. I watched numerous AMD and Intel offerings come and go into useless obsolescence while that D just found a way.

If I build another PC any time soon I'm strongly considering going a similar route. They're something like half the price, too.

Goodnight HF. Yes, that's the moon with no filters. And the picture does it no justice.

This is another way to go that's perfectly fine. But when someone mentions a Pi, I skew towards pure value/$ and let them correct me if they want more. You'll see what I mean.

Cool, I'd appreciate that!

I know you said you wanted to keep your options open. If you think you might want to turn this into a gaming PC, these boxes WILL NOT work for that for various reasons. The idea behind them is that they're so cheap that it becomes absurd. However, they're extremely popular for turning into servers because they're cheap, reliable, and in Small Form Factors. The upgrades you would want for something like a media server are easily done.

Some people like the HPs. I do not like their products in general. If you want to look at those, they call them Mini Business Desktops. When an older member of my family wants a computer, I personally grab a Dell or Lenovo box like this. Both have a rep for ease of compatability with Linux.

I'll assume you can figure out which processor you might want given that you want to learn Linux. Sometimes these SFF boxes only come with DisplayPorts. No HDMI. You can of course fix this easily externally, but it costs extra money and you might have been better off just getting a more expensive model. Also pay extremely close attention to the storage. Many of these are dirt cheap because they only have an HDD. You can, however, add a dirt cheap SSD. The sales are absurd. Figure you can find a 500 GB SSD for $30 and a TB well under 100.

Before you or I actually dig into sellers, what I need to know is whether I'm on the right track or not here. Here are some examples:

SSD

HDD

More RAM and bigger SSD

From what I've seen from the brief encounters of Koreans dating my extended family and just hearing stories through the grapevines. Koreans are very difficult. Sometimes I swear they're pretty similar to the Chinese. Some of them are big on status and they want all the fance and luxury brands possible. Just a generalization and hopefully our boy has met an exception who is down to earth and genuine. Asian families in general are whackadoodle. It's a bit of the collectivist mentality from the east, your business is everyone's business sometimes.

TL;DR Godspeed

Yeah, the gossip and judgment in these countries is really overwhelming and shitty.

I remember an interview with M. Night on Howard Stern. He said his parents were devastated he went to film school at NYU vs medical or law school ,.....

My experiences with Indians hasn't been too different as far as the status thing.

Thanks!

I think I'd prefer to pay more for something with an internal SSD and HDMI port.

My friends either don't care at all or are not the target audience, so let me ask here. People understand the Linus Tech Tips channel is not a place to go for computer benchmarks or any form of rigorous testing of ANY product, right?

Be entertained by whatever you want. I'm just talking about the quality of specific work they do.

I've been baffled at how hard my phone has been wanting to push this at me. I have spent years aggressively begging my phone to block further LTT content.

I've never heard of this so I assume you are correct.

Sitting in the Denver airport right now reminiscing about the past few days in Colorado. Big fan of this state. Would recommend.

I did not live there nearly long enough.

This is because they put out more than 50 videos a week. They keep finding ways to get new triggers.

I think it's still the biggest computer channel on YouTube. It's what the algorithm suggests if you search in an Incognito browser for example.

I've assumed that my phone thinks "well since you hate it, here's some stuff bashing it!"
