Every decade has shit color-by-number popular music, good popular music, and more niche stuff. But we don’t consume music the same today, so you get more and more niche stuff at the expense of these universally agreed upon titans — and I don’t mean that only regarding popularity. But if you want music with soul, there’s always music with soul. (I don’t think the movie industry is any different.)

Not going to lie, I like some recent Taylor Swift a la carte. And I’m all over the place with my tastes. Her last album, Midnights, has some bangers (“Lavender Haze” I think is the standout). I also think I’m an Antonoff fan as a producer. Probably not a coincidence Lana Del Rey and Lorde are two of my favorite contemporary artists, and he’s produced for both. Every Lana album since Norman F-ing Rockwell (shoutout @DancingPanther ) knocks me on my ass with its soul.

The majority of my listening is still in the 60s-90s decades, but for whatever reason pretty much all my newer favorite artists/singers today are female. Snail Mail, Wolf Alice, Phoebe Bridgers, along with the above. I have no idea if that’s just random personal taste or something in the industry at large.
Bridgers' collab with Kid Cudi called Loving Me is an absolute 10/10 song.

I respect the hell out of Taylor Swift. She's genuinely talented and an excellent roll model for young girls nowadays with her Eras Tour and how positive her message is around mental health, support of others, and overall kindness and empowerment. Hating Taylor is so old. Not to mention her bringing the predatory music industry into light while simultaneously sticking it to them with her "Taylor's Version" re-recordings, which are CRUSHING it. That is so huge. When you have an international icon whistleblowing that shit it could change the landscape. You don't have to like her music, but you really should respect her game and platform. Lady Gaga and my girl Alicia Keys too.

You and @JojoTheWhale mention not consuming music the same way as prior generations... I'd like to add the following: finding new music is easier than ever, ironically while being more daunting than ever. Yes, there are all kinds of catalogs to muddle through on different platforms, but you also have the ability to AI generate curated playlists exactly to your tastes. Welcome to the future. Anyone "refusing" to listen to new music just has their head in the sand and can't press play on "for you" playlists. I'm looking at my Spotify homepage and see 6 of them. All it takes is one song to find a new artist.

Fair. YouTube does it for free too.

This is pure speculation, but I think what has happened is that as we get older, we get disconnected from the social and cultural aspects of music. If you're not into it as a thing, it loses rhe ability to resonate. The problem is us.

I could link you a video from the last decade with 8 figures of YouTube plays that's the single best musical performance I've ever seen. It's in 14/4 with a sousaphone holding the bass line. The variety is wild. I know you know this. It's just worth repeating.

I'm going to give you full credit because Brooklyn + England does in fact equal Bulgaria.

I was dumbstruck the first time i heard this on a set of headphones with good separation. Everyone playing in this a monster. You might recognize Cory Henry (produced for Kanye) for example. He visibly shakes his head in disbelief at multiple points.

I'm a big fan of the Bleachers MTV Unplugged show. I'm okay with listening to their regular music, but I'm not generally a fan of the faster pace. I'll take this stripped down versions of most songs, but it is especially true with Bleachers.

Taylor Swift is garbage. Lizzo is a blob of rancid fat. Modern music is completely void without any soul. Oldies and stuff from the 2000s still hold up well. I'd rather listen to video game soundtracks than any of this random assortment of words and auto tune that is called music nowadays.
So explain to me the difference between 2000s JLo and Swift?

There is incredible music being made in every genre. It just takes more effort to find now. I don't blame anyone for not making the time to do that, but it is the difference between finding new artists you like and not having any.
Grace Potter, Ray Lamontange.....

There are good and bad reasons to dislike Taylor Swift. Like some people purely hate her for being a successful woman, which is obviously a bad reason. Though, she's a poor role model, I'd say. Feminism is just her brand. She's absolutely part of the predatory music industry.

Collier is just absurd... He probably should get more attention. His stuff is experimental but still very digestible. And how many Collier talents are alive right now who get no recognition? That's the state of music right now. It's an overwhelming, chaotic beast.

Did you hear his microtonal version of (I think) O holy night? Def a Christmas song, but it's goofy. Like how

He plays a G major and a G#maj while he's holding the microtonal note in some video and the note he's singing doesn't match either. Right in the middle

Also what
Well, she's practically a nepo baby. Her parents weren't in music but they significantly invested in her career. She seemed to go after Olivia Rodrigo to get credited on one of her tracks. And she's cozy with people who disproportionately profit off of the work of other artists, most notably Matty Healy.

I think she's committed to changing the industry as long as it benefits her brand, which is fine but not particularly laudable. Like I wouldn't praise a billionaire for their philanthropy. Giving back is the bare minimum effort in recompense for stepping on so many heads to amass such an egregious amount of wealth.
