Every decade has shit color-by-number popular music, good popular music, and more niche stuff. But we don’t consume music the same today, so you get more and more niche stuff at the expense of these universally agreed upon titans — and I don’t mean that only regarding popularity. But if you want music with soul, there’s always music with soul. (I don’t think the movie industry is any different.)
Not going to lie, I like some recent Taylor Swift a la carte. And I’m all over the place with my tastes. Her last album,
Midnights, has some bangers (“Lavender Haze” I think is the standout). I also think I’m an Antonoff fan as a producer. Probably not a coincidence Lana Del Rey and Lorde are two of my favorite contemporary artists, and he’s produced for both. Every Lana album since
Norman F-ing Rockwell (shoutout
@DancingPanther ) knocks me on my ass with its soul.
The majority of my listening is still in the 60s-90s decades, but for whatever reason pretty much all my newer favorite artists/singers today are female. Snail Mail, Wolf Alice, Phoebe Bridgers, along with the above. I have no idea if that’s just random personal taste or something in the industry at large.
