Can you do a trial run using your phone and see if it can handle what she needs? Otherwise I have no idea about this stuff, but I've used my phone as hot spot for a laptop before.
Speaking of trial, she was looking into having the internet hotspot through the car and turns out she didn’t activate her six month trial that we got when we bought the car so we’re going to give that a trial along with phone hot spots tomorrow.

She has one a year and it starts tomorrow so she being stressed already doesn’t wanna add more stress by finding someone else.

I'm already on call this week. I'll do it.

But for serious, phone hotspot. We recently tested such a thing for our stuff, and from what you've described performance should be good. This was on years-old Samsung Galaxies. As is, 4G is gonna be more than enough bandwidth. The chief trick will be connection reliability, and since Buffalo is a 5th world country, good luck.

She’ll be “using a VPN that runs a bunch of programs at once like Word, Citrix, Teams, Jabber, etc” on a laptop.

No use of video streaming or anything like that. Voice calls will possibly be a thing but she can use her phone on that one if need be obviously.

Her job is that she “determines medical necessity of inpatient hospital stays.” So she basically is looking at charts and reaching out to hospitals.

Then just use the phone in hotspot mode or the free Comcast network. Even if she somehow goes over the data cap of your phone plan, it should be way less than buying a hotspot and then buying a prepaid chunk of data.

As always I appreciate you guys more than you know.

Gonna expound on this, since you are going to the Vanuatu of the East Coast. You people will be going through mountain country, and that can be hell for signals. Her connectivity may not be great; if she's working, there may be many packets vanishing into the ether or she may be without signal entirely. There is no avoiding this. If it happens, assume none of the choices involved would have solved it.

At my work, we found the only solution for such a thing was to have a phone and a hotspot on different carriers. It maxes the chance that at least one device can talk to a tower somewhere. But that's a ridiculous solution in her case.

I think we might need to wipe out all of the scientists working with genetics at this point.
It's insane. It's time travel to the future. And I didn't really do "waking up." I was already awake, I just wasn't lucid/aware, and the awareness snapped into place.
I met the robot before I went under, and was saying hello and the next thing I knew I was in a little room with all kinds of discomfort I hadn't had before.

Luckily that type of ridiculous solution may play a role in our adventure.

I believe Audi uses T-Mobile and our phones are Verizon so we got that going for us.

Life is cruel.

My brother and I have followed very similar paths in life, engaged months apart, married months apart, had kids months apart, and many others.

Well we got another kick in the dick similarity. His father-in-law just passed away up in Buffalo which comes just two months after HCette's dad passed away.

Our paternal grandfather died long before either of us were alive and our maternal grandfather died when I was like 3 or 4. So the long story short is that now our own kids won't have a grandfather on either side and it's a real shitty feeling. Now in the back of my head it's started my own clock of mortality which has never been there.

Very sorry for your loss, HC.

I missed, is she working on the drive?

In my experience I have not had much issue at least up through Binghamton on T-Mobile. It's north of Syracuse where I've run into issues. I haven't traveled west in a decade, but I think you'd have better coverage if you go north to Syracuse and then west on the Thruway rather than taking 17 west from Binghamton. I can reach out to some folks in my Buffalo office if you want a more solid route with good coverage.

Edit: I will caveat this by saying I'm not always looking at my phone's bars, so I might lose signal now and then through NEPA. But I just made a run to Scranton today and to and from Syracuse last week and didn't notice any problems.

More or less I agree with Beef.

Word/Citrix/Teams isn't going to use a lot of bandwidth.

Any cellular hot spot should suffice, heck if she has a work phone with unlimited data that should be fine.

I traveled from Portland, Maine to Boston using a hotspot through my phone and it was fine. (much shorter and not in the mountains.. i know)

I have a difficult time with empathy and processing emotions. Some may call me a high-functioning sociopath; however, I understand the emotions - I just struggle to feel them. It's one reason I can't get juiced about photos of animals or babies.

I say all of this because I truly wish you a much better road ahead and regret, for you and your family's sake, the recent road you've been forced to travel.

@Beef Invictus @JojoTheWhale Others

We're going to have to drive up to Buffalo for this funeral and this of course is HCette's one week out of the year where she's "on call" for her job so she needs internet access. I'm looking into mobile hotspots through Verizon but have absolutely no idea what i'm looking at.

I saw the best reviewed one (and most expensive) though Verizon is the Orbic Speed 5G UW. I just have absolutely no concept of what the plans are because it would be through a business plan and it only offers 5-10GB of data which seems rough.

Would a iPhone hotspot get the job done? Should we get the hotspot that comes in her car (Audi)?

She's super stressed about this and it's kind of above my mental capacity at the moment.
Let me know when you drive past the Rochester exits and I'll salute in your direction. Best of luck with everything and very sorry for your loss.

Any form of Hotspot you use is going to be dependant on cell towers/sats in the area. Doesn't make a difference if its in the car vs a Mifi/Mobile Hotspot vs the in car wifi, vs the personal hotspot on an unlimited cell plan.

We used to give our folks at work Verizon Jetpack/Mifi's and then when we went unlimited on our company phone verizon plan just switched to personal hotspot on iphones.

Ohio doesn’t exist

I’m just now realizing your avatar isn’t Arnold from total recall…
Nope it's Tammy Lauren in Wishmaster making that face NATURALLY. Which is an amazing accomplishment. After seeing that take she asked the director to not use it and he said "No, I wouldn't dream of it." then kept that comedy gold right where it was.

EDIT: THIS frame looks closer to Total Recall

Everyone knows the disparity between someone out of shape and a world class athlete. That's not fun, and the weird internet fad of "wanting a regular person in the Olympics" is not fun.

It should be how the amateur athlete would do against world class athletes. Your teammate who's actually good at hockey. Your friend who was pretty dominant at track but didn't win states. The guy at your gym who does dry land and actually is pretty fast. The girl at work who runs marathons. Those are the people who would REALLY put it in to perspective.
