100%, story and characters over everything. Demon slayer you have to appreciate the animation but wow do they take a long time to really take the characters nowhere.Psh, I’m more story than animation. I watched the Entertainment District in 1.5x speed to get through it.
I hated Inosuke and Zenitsu sooooo much I nearly stopped reading the manga within the first couple chapters. I started with the manga before I dove into the animated series. I got to about the start of Entertainment District and then started the animation from the beginning. After a while I actually (finally) grew to like those two nitwits.

So basically it's like every other Shonen Jump cash-cow franchise (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Dragon Ball, etc)
I don't think I find subs too distracting because I can read fast enough, but I honestly tend to find that the dislike for dubs is overrated after about the early 2000s. For example, I MUCH prefer the english dub of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Mary McGlynn's Major is absolutely perfect. Meanwhile the original Japanese VA gets to the scenes where the Major is trying to fake seduce some guards to distract them and she sounds like someone's grandma trying to read a porn script (which I know is going to be somebody's fetish, just not mine.). Dragon Ball as well. I get the point of continuity of having Masako Nozawa continue to voice Goku all the way through the franchise after starting out in OG Dragon Ball, but there's something awkward and wrong with having his Z-era self still sound like a froggy-voiced kid.
Meanwhile fansubs especially can fall victim to a bunch of absolutely terrible "you must be this much of a weeaboo to watch." gatekeeping practices.
I'm watching all the Transformers series through in full (many for the first time) and right now I'm on the early 2000s anime ones (the "Unicron Trilogy" of Armada, Energon, and Cybertron. Or if you're a weeb: Micron Legend, SuperLink, and Galaxy Force). Two of the 3 series are subbed by a long-time group called TV-Nihon that also does a ton of Super Sentai (aka Power Rangers) and Kamen Rider shows and are kind of notorious for how stupid they are. In one episode I watched they had a subtitle that said "follow me-tachi!" and then a lengthy translator's note on screen to explain that the "-tachi" suffix means "and everyone" and is used to give group orders/directives by singling out one important person and then using the -tachi to refer to everyone else around them.
Meanwhile they could've just written "follow me!" or, at worst, "follow me, everyone!" and achieved the same thing entirely in English with no T/N and not wasting everyone's time with their insistence that all true weeb fans know these words for "flavor" purposes. It's some prime level "Keikaku means plan" BS. And it's not even the worst thing they do.
I once saw a screencap of a Kamen Rider sub they did where the episode title used an unusual proper noun that had its roots in feudal Japan and instead of explaining it, their translator note told the audience to go watch a specific Kurosawa film to understand the context. Like who the hell does that? "Oh yeah, I could explain what this means, but I'd rather give you hours of homework on a topic that might not even interest you instead."

I think dubs are better these days but in the past, the quality of the audio mixing and range and quality of VAs back then was pretty abysmal.
I read pretty quickly, but I get caught watching the animation and then miss the some bit of the subtitles, or they're going on and on in the middle of a fight I'm trying to watch, but can't understand what's going on unless I read a bunch of text at the bottom of the screen... I like it better when my ears are taking in the dialog while my eyes are taking in the animation. Feels more natural.
I should learn Japanese so I don't need the subs or dubs.
Lupin III is one of my favorites and the old dubbed seasons are pretty bad. The newest season is really good. It's like the history of that whole voice-actor-quality thing in one series.

Have you ever heard of the infamous Ghost Stories dub. When the English localization was happening, they were told to do whatever they could to sell the anime so they just threw out the original script and made their own shit up and they turned it from like a serious shonen series into a pure gag anime. It became a bit of a cult classic. Personally haven't watched it but it's a pretty wild story

It really was less the difficulty of the puzzles, in the end, as the irritation of having to put a new CD into the computer every time you moved to a different island.
The version I played is a single package, updated for 64-bit Windows, so I got to avoid that issue. I do still have the 5 disc game, though.

Not offensive at all or wacky quite to the same extent, but there was a series in the early 90s that did the same thing: Samurai Pizza Cats.
Legend has it that Saban or whoever were the licensors for the west bought the show (called Kyattou Ninden Teyandee in Japan, and was basically a generic cutesy action series set in a feudal Japan populated by half-robotic anthropomorphic animals) to capitalize on the success of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles since it was "similar" (ninja/samurai turtles/cats).
The original rumors were that the company opened the package full of video masters and were greeted with one of the following:
-Untranslated Japanese scripts
-terribly translated Japanese scripts
-No scripts whatsoever
-Blank scripts that were just cover pages and nothing inside
The reality was far more mundane: Tatsunoko Productions knew that the series was rife with very Japanese cultural gags and references, and aware that it wouldn't be received the same way by a western audience they just told Saban to do whatever they wanted to make it funny for English-speaking viewers.The end result was an incredibly self-aware show that routinely lampshaded its more ridiculous elements, gleefully acknowledge the fourth wall and its own nature as a cartoon, and features insanity such as taking the fox-based major villain and pretending he's a rat with the most camp interpretation possible, or having the theme song sung in a goofy Paul Lynde impression that sure as hell sounds like he's drunk for most of it.
It's still a G-rated show but it's got some good laughs in it for how insane it gets.

does anyone else think that UTI.edu could have maybe done a better job picking words to name themselves, or at least the order of those words? The commercials always get my attention. But, how much do you really need to know about Urinary Tract Infections? Is an entire school about it really necessary? The world ran out of unique three letter abbreviations a long time ago. New ones should at least be aware of the pre-existing.
