I would bet on him staying put. If they take the sign and trade route they’d want players back to help now including a decent center. A prospect/pick package wouldn’t be of interest imo.
matthews has never been or will ever be available. Leaf for life.Matthews has a NMC kicking in July 1st and then walks as a UFA one year after that.
Leafs are either :
- extending Matthews on July 1st
- sign and trading Matthews on July 1st (LAK or ANH or ARZ)
- trading Matthews before July 1st, he has 1 year left then UFA
So what is Matthews worth for one year to Colorado, Boston, Carolina, Seattle, Vegas? Or any team that would maybe be interesting in adding him for one year.
Toronto can't retain any salary, but I suppose theoretically some third team could if you involve them and the team adding Matthews compensates the third team.
I don't claim to know what a fair deal here is. You tell me.
My personal assumptions :
- All trades will include 1st round pick or one of the team's best prospects or both
- COL trade includes at least one of Girard, Lehkonen
- BOS trade includes at least one of Hall, Coyle, Carlo, Ullmark
- CAR trade involves Kotkaniemi
- SEA trade involves at least one of Gourde, McCann, Schwartz, Wennberg, Burakovsky
- VGK trade involves at least one of Martinez, Marchessault, Karlsson, Smith
Why? Bob and the Cats ushered your team to early retirement, he played up to his contract, unlike Matthews.Seems ironic considering Bobrovsky.
Congrats on also not winning the Cup!Why? Bob and the Cats ushered your team to early retirement, he played up to his contract, unlike Matthews.

That would be something. I suppose they could retain on RyJo and throw him in for MatthewsCongrats on also not winning the Cup!
As for OP - imagine AM with the Avs. That would be wild.
22yr old defensively solid 3C, who is slowly progressing. 18g + 25a 43p +10. Has a FO% of 51.4. Thats pretty good for a young player. Kotkaniemi had a CF% 63.7. It`s among the leagues best. If you dont follow a player you shouldnt make comments about something you have no clue about...CAR trade involves Kotkaniemi!!!
Used lost all hockey credibility in one foul swoop
Absolutely horrible names mentioned as required players in Matthews trade horrible!
I dont think so the guy doesnt seem like the loyal type.Matthews is staying with Toronto.
Definitely not a #1 C any more. We believe he will be moved to the wing for the remainder of his contract. They should keep Matthews and move Nylander and Marner. Who plays 1C with Matthews gone? Tavares?
It won’t be Tavares. Quite certain he will now be a fixture on the wing.Tavares yeah.
If Toronto got Coyle or Kotkaniemi or Gourde or Karlsson back in the Matthews trade, you might see a first line of "Knies - (new guy) - (Marner/Nylander)" if those guys have really good chemistry with each other, with Tavares leading the second line. It's probably Tavares at 1C though.
If he wants more than $12.7 million ($100,000 more than MacKinnon, I believe), then I say trade him. I don’t even believe he’s worth that much.matthews has never been or will ever be available. Leaf for life.
This and every thread ever on the subject/
Yup, I agree. Both Matthews and Marner have continuously disappeared in the playoffs when it mattered the most! Why? Bob and the Cats ushered your team to early retirement, he played up to his contract, unlike Matthews.
We seem to believe that a deal has already been put in place to resign him on July 1st. My biggest fear is what the dollar amount is going to be. Most fans have always thought it was Dubas who had the undying faith in this core (which he may have), but it’s beginning to look more and more like it was Shanahan. And it appears they are willing to give him what he wants, unfortunately!will the Leafs wait until his NMC kicks in before trying to trade him? What if he says he will not waive his NMC except for 1 team? What happens if AM decides not to talk contract until then? Would the Leafs preempt and trade him anyways? This could turn sour real quick.
Agreed, that has to be the main reason Doan was brought in.They literally brought Captain Coyote Doan himself to keep him in Toronto. There's no way they deal him as a rental
Yup, I agree. I remember when we had Kessel and Phaneuf, and the country club atmosphere that was in the dressing room. Unfortunately, it seems to still be here now with this group.Meh, I don’t think it works like that. A team trading for him is going to want to know he’s willing to sign. That really doesn’t matter if it’s now or after July 1. I don’t think anyone is going to trade for him just for the year.
The Leafs would get a Karlsson package. I doubt that GM will misread his team like SJ did so that the Leafs get a top draft pick more like a 20 OA or later.
But I’d still be shocked if he doesn’t sign with the Leafs. That’s where he will get the most money and they don’t seem to put much pressure on him about his less than elite playoff performances.
Unfortunately, that seems to be the way it’s unfolding. We Leaf fans are waiting to see if these three are all about winning (taking a hometown discount to help put a much better supporting cast around them), or all about squeezing every last penny out that they can. Because they certainly were squeezers on their last contract.OMG we're going to get to watch this again aren't we?
And the Leaf fans belief that this is all going to work out, that he's going to resign there long term ... its genuine. Its almost beautiful
Either scenario would not be good for our Leafs. My hope, although slim, is that he‘ll take a hometown discount to resign. If he won’t, then they have to trade him. Problem is, I think Shanahan is willing to pay him.yeah thats the problem. but only issue is no one will pay what Leafs would want and risk not getting him extended. Leafs are stuck between a rock and a hard place with that one. Matthews for sure will either take 14-15m to extend or he will walk and Leafs get nothing
I really like that they brought in Doan (has worked with Armstrong and Yzerman, that cannot hurt!), but helping with the Matthews’ talks had to play a part in it too. They didn't bring in Doan to keep Matthews in Toronto. If it helps, great, but he was hired based on his relationship with Treliving.
Yeah, it kinda does. The only way that Mathews gets a big haul in return is if he agrees to a deal beforehand.Matthews holds most of the cards, but that doesn't mean the return should be low.
He walks for nothingTreliving said that, but is he really going to risk Matthews walking for nothing after he went through the exact same thing with Gaudreau between 2021 and 2022? The fanbase would eat him alive and he would be fired as well.
The way I see it, GMs say a lot of things. Talk is cheap when push comes to shove. Or maybe he's just a huge idiot and he's gonna risk it and possibly get fired after he f__ks the franchise over.
At TDL they would. No team is trading for 1 year rental of this calibre a player. Cost would still be way too high if you don't intend on resigning the player.
I wish he signs 8, I'm thinking 5 is what we'll end up with. Anything 5+ and no complaints from me.He can pull a Dominik Hasek and really hamstring the Leafs.
However I believe he will sign a whopping 8 year extension with Toronto.
Why would Toronto want a couple of guys in their near mid-thirties making stupid money??
