My fear with this situation is that it's going to become a huge distraction for a team that's rolling along smoothly. The longer this drags out towards the trade deadline the more noise and chatter there will be. Even if they don't plan on trading him it'll be a constant stream of speculation and media attention all the way through the end of the year wondering if Pasta will walk. In a year where they're looking like they could be serious contenders this kind of thing could really throw a wrench in an amazing season
It is a distraction....but also it isn't

We all know that he is a big part of the club. He won't be traded at the deadline.....zero chance if you ask me

IF Pasta walks... Sweeney probably should be fired lol. However my guess is that he has the backing of the Jacobs....because they would be the ones ultimately forking out the money

Yeah I had the same question. Dom will know.

Either we're good, or we're just shy.

Things gonna be annoying on the next injury that isn't LTIR.

What kind of creative solution is possible?

Since no buyer for Reilly or Smitty.... what about see what you can get for Nosek?

I'm a little surprised the Bruins weren't able to get a pick for Stralman. Guys like him usually net at least something at the deadline. I guess they preferred to roll the dice on him clearing (or possibly being able to re-claim him if he gets waived again down the line) over a mid/late round pick.

not anymore in these cap days and picks are precious.
the whole league knows Bruins must shed cap. Why give up anything if you desire him he can be had for free.

That's unfortunate. I feel like Stralman has been pretty solid this season. He's definitely been more reliable than Zboril but Bruins clearly preferred to risk losing a 36 year old over a 25 year old despite the on-ice performance. Fingers crossed he clears but I'd be surprised given the number of teams (Van, Tor, Ott to name a few) who have allegedly been looking for D.
While based on Capfriendly waiving Stralman gets us under the cap so we’re good
If he does clear waivers.... does that mean the Bruins are back to square 1?

Because there could very easily be multiple teams putting in a claim for him so giving up a late pick would skip the line. And it's not like his contract would be difficult for teams to fit under the cap.

Literally the first guy who is hurt for 1-2 weeks is going to cause this to keep going once we need to call money up.

This will keep being a thing till they make a bigger move. At least it allows them to buy time till other playoff teams have injuries and need healthy bodies.

I can't see how Craig Smith isn't attached to a draft pick at the deadline or before.

I think so..

but…I hope dom swings by. He knows better than me.
It's weird - others and especially Dom have been saying all along that they need to clear $1.3M-$1.4M (depending on timeframe). But now, if you do CF's armchair GM thing, waiving Stralman gets them there.

There's something off and I'm not sure where.

This cap situation is a disaster. I blame it all on the Reilly signing. Was an overpayment at the time when clearly he didn't have a lot of FA interest, and it looks even worse now. $4 mil salary vs. $3 mil cap hit next year too, so it's a nightmare contract for teams on tighter internal budgets.

me neither. I thought they were still ~ 300k or so short. But thats why I trust in dom. Could be one of those so many dollars per day thing with so many already gone.
Which, admittedly, gives me a headache.

If you use CapFriendly, go to the Bruins page.

The projected cap hit minus the cap upper limit is what has to be moved. In this case $84,435,581 minus $82,500,000.

You don't even have to do the math, they do it for you in the projected LTIR used which is $1,935,581.

For folks asking about the cap with the Stralman waiving, here is what Dom had said previously in a post to me^

Assuming Stralman clears/is claimed then $1 million would come off the Bruins Projected Cap Hit which today sits at $83,831,527. If I followed Dom's post right, then Boston would still need to clear roughly $330k in cap space to bring Forbort back.

I don’t think armchair gm takes into account the cap already spent, it just uses the total caphit for the season
They aren’t sending down Stralmans full 1 mil, they’re sending down however much caphit is left for the season.
I could be wrong but that’s the way I understand it.
Get well soon Dom! We’re lost without you haha

Which can be found by swapping Zboril for Ahcan. Which is probably what they'll do.

because you may be too far up the list of waiver claims. If a top 15 team wants a guy they probably figure a lower team will grab that player so move a later pick if nothing else for the player. I wonder if Sweeney even tried to move Stralman or just panicked and put him on waivers when he found out he couldn't move Smith or Reilly withour moving a pick with them.

numbers would work I think. But that means gotta waive Zboril. And he has to clear or be taken before game time. I think.
they really need to move Reilly and get some breathing room. This is why they and most teams shoot to stay a half to a million under. Its a tightrope.

yep, as I replied I understand the math and process. Doesnt change that it rarely ever happens anymore.
