Remember that he and his front office are the ones who targeted Zetterlund in the first place when most people on this board wanted Alex Holtz in that trade.

I don't think it was either/or Zetts or Holtz but Holtz or Mukhamadullin and Zetterlund or Sharangovich.

The rumor at the time was a player, prospect, and a pick.

I specifically remember you saying Zetterlund was just as good if not a better pickup than Holtz which turned out to be dead on.

The funny thing is that if I'm looking at things correctly, he played his most minutes in the NHL this year with...Noah Gregor.

It seems like playing with not-Noah Gregor will help him, judging from the numbers. Maybe next year!

Seriously, though: Ostapchuk's Fenwick numbers with Gregor? 44%. Without? Nearly 55%. Get him away from that man, already.
Greer thinking ahead he wants Gregor on his hip the whole time so when contract time comes up he can use his lesser production created by pairing him with Gregor he can get him Cheap. LOL
:biglaugh:

Afterwards he can then have coach play him with good players and get better play and more points at a discount and really really piss off Ostap when he realizes who Greer cost him a payday. LOL

I know you guys aren't stoked on this trade but Sens fan here and I gotta come in and say that Ostapchuk is a very likeable, heart and soul, humble hard working player that you will grow to love. It will take patience but as you accumulate all kinds of talent through this rebuild and eventually progress toward contender status, Ostapchuk will prove to be the rock underpinning it all.

Paywall, but do yourself a favour and find a way to access this article:

The long and short of it is his dad died when he was 14 and him and his mom were suddenly on their own. He was always a good kid who kept his nose clean but after his dad died he became the rock for his mom. He worked hard and has been a coaches dream everywhere he has played. Doesn't want the spotlight, never asks for attention, just goes about his business and does what's asked of him, plays the right way and then some.

The Zack Ostapchuk type character is exactly what is missing from most young NHLers these days. This guy is a quiet, tough, responsible, hard working future fan favourite that will earn everything that is offered to him by his coach, teammates and fans. He needs time and he isn't flashy but I am convinced that he is destined for something that is way above his pay grade. This guy will wear a letter one day and is the type to be handed the cup second by whatever captain he plays alongside.

There is nobody in the NHL I am pulling harder for and I'm now a closet Sharks fan because he's wearing the jersey. Treat him well.

The issue is that Zett was a heart and soul, hardworking likeable guy too who actually has proven to be a solid 20g 25a a year guy. And someone who seemed like really gelled with Smith, Eklund and Celebrini. And at 25 years old, still young enough to be a part of the core.

Jettisioning him for someone who is younger and cheaper and maybe someday can make a Zett like impact just feels like spinning wheels. That being said, I definitely appreciate this article and the words about Ostapchuk. Zetterlund grew to be a fan favourite here. Maybe Ostapchuk will too. Lets see.

The one thing is that Zett has never been relied on to be a PKer, which is what you usually want from your third liners. If Ostapchuk can be a similar player but someone who can also contribute as a regular PKer, this trade might look better.

Initial emotional reaction is that this sucks and it’s a terrible trade. Zetterlund was the first player Grier brought in that I thought could be part of the long term future. He was part of the young/fun energy this group has displayed lately despite losing so many games.

Logically this could end up being a great move if the pro scouts are right. Scouting was one of the first areas Grier invested in when he took over, and this move will be the first major test of their vision for the team. It sounds like they think this kid will be a part of the cup winning team they are looking to build.

What sucks the most is only time will tell, and until then I will miss watching Zetterlund’s infectious energy and relentless effort.

Overall this might be the craziest trade deadline I have ever seen. Really shows how far off the Sharks are when you look at some of the teams that have been assembled.

For real. That Dallas team is insane.

I said that Ostapchuk was a great, high-character guy after the trade, but I don't think anyone was going to listen at that point because there was too much reflexive anger.

I'm quite happy to have him on the team. I'm a Vancouver Giants season ticket holder since like 2017 so I was there for his entire junior career except for those like 30 games he played in Winnipeg to cap off his WHL run. I was there for him as the Giants captain and I still see probably more Ostapchuk jerseys in the arena than any other single player.

I think he'll probably be graded harshly by the fans that are upset at losing Zetterlund, but he's the kind of guy who becomes extremely likeable extremely quickly if you're not on train of him being a "garbage 4th liner who will be out of the league in a few years"

So I know this is by no means important to how you build a team, but more than the actual deal itself, I’m mostly bitter about this deal feeling like it killed the good vibes. They had it basically torn down to the studs after the walman deal and I was still excited to watch the games.

I have no idea why this deal specifically punctured the optimism balloon haha

Two quick takes on this already lengthy thread:

1) No one can argue that Gregor didn’t have a noticeable impact on this team in just a matter of a few games. As painful as that was.

2). Even at my advanced age I’ve come to learn that there is always plenty to be learned. Jux completely updated a long held misconception I had on the term “nads”!

Actually cannot. CBA does not allow "retaining" team to re-acquire player.

Not true. Per the CBA, Article 50.5(c)(iii)(C)(3), there's only a one year limit from the date of the salary retention before the team that retained salary can reacquire the player, unless the player's contract expires before then.

Since the one year limit has passed, the Sharks could now (meaning this offseason since the trade deadline has passed) or in the future re-acquire EK65.

Really don't like this deal. It actually besmirches some of the good will and props i was giving Grier for the Meier deal, being that Fabian himself was just about keeping pace with Timo's goal scoring over in NJ.

you cannot convince me that Grier couldn't have just waited and found a better deal for Zetterlund in the summer. If he really wanted he could have used Fabian to sweeten a deal and move up in the first round. And here, he throws in a 4th, just cuz

Gregor not doing what he did is probably the difference between us getting
Bedard that draft and then missing out on Celebrini last year… and I’ll take Macklin 110 out of 100 times ha
