yea idk about that one. I cant think of a team out there who drafted worse in the first round since we won in 2008.

Even Arizona drafted better in round 1. We only remember busts because when you have such high picks, in top 10-20, you need to hit on some of those once in a while. Larkin and Mantha in 15 years, cant tell me thats really acceptable.

dude, the 2017 draft makes me disgusted. Scouts and directors of scouting should lose jobs over that one. Unacceptable and outright horrendous. I mean there's a chance we only nail a bottom 6 forward out of that crop.
I never said the drafting in the 1st was great, I didn’t even say it was good, I said statistically it’s average. I imagine you haven’t broken down the drafting of all the other nhl teams, like I said before, someone on this board did that and we landed somewhere in the middle if my memory serves me right.

Damn.... Yzerman just laid down the law on that one...

"You wanted that contract and now that contract is keeping other teams from wanting to give you an opportunity"
Wasn't Zadina rumored to be the return for the JVR trade that didn't happen at the deadline, because there was a third team involved that f***ed it up? Or am I misremembering?

Yzerman, I'm sure, made that remark out of frustration that he's probably had a ton of conversations about this guy, but I'm sure he won't retain. Good riddance to this guy.

I can't remember. My only recollection was that Detroit was supposed to somehow be involved as a 3rd party to move JVR elsewhere?

Yea, I think Yzerman is kind of airing it out that he isn't going to take any sort of hit to accommodate Zadina's request.

I'm doubting teams simply said "no", it's probably more realistic that when he made some calls a week or so ago, the interest level was something like, "Sure, as long as you take Kassian or Nemeth in exchange".

I wouldn't be surprised if Zadina bounces between Detroit and GR for a year and then ends up being bought out, either by Detroit or some cap strapped team that wants the $450k buy out credit for 24/25.

The fact that Zadina has requested a trade, really changes the dynamics here.

Honestly, Yzerman probably really did try to get anything of value for Zadina, as long as we are not losing cap or getting significantly worse to do so. I know this is a fact because they just proved it. They waived him to say "ANY team want him for free... go ahead". They didn't do this to throw him away, they are doing this to tell the agent... "Look, if no one grabs him for free, no one wants him." So if Zadina clears... he goes to GR, and he has to work on his game there. No way he doesn't report, or Yzerman will just suspend him. He will keep him suspended, and to my knowledge, his contract doesn't move forward if he doesn't report.. That would mean the end of his career. So Zadina will report.

I fully expect someone to take Zadina for free. But if no one takes him, base case is he spends the year in GR. Waiting for a rash of injuries in the NHL, or another team to change their mind about Zadina.

That would be a monumentally dumb decision. He is going to show up wherever he gets sent. He's got $4.5M coming to him over the next couple years.
I was thinking he only had one year left, and didn't realize how backloaded his contract was. So yeah, definitely would.

Steve kind of inferred in the presser that not getting anything for Zadina or finding a taker may have been due to his 1.8 cap hit. He talked about liking Zadina but maybe he got the contract he wanted but maybe prevented a move.

Said he saw growth, likes Filip and still thinks he can become a good NHL player. If clears waivers he is hoping Filip comes to camp and earns his way back up.

Which is exactly what you say after you've pulled the lanyard on the trebuchet. "Wow. That was a good one - almost to the horizon. If he makes it back to us we'd definitely enroll him in kindergarten again, you know, since we're already paying for it."

Didn't Jake Debrusk ask for a trade before breaking out? Yzerman's comments do seem to point to a player who is still maturing. Kid is clearly frustrated, but has shown talent in short bursts before. I'm rooting for the Zadina comeback story.

Zadina is a strange case. Clearly he has potential, yet the Wings were unable to unlock that. How much of this can be blamed on Holland-holdover Ben Simon and his assistants? I really hope for the best for this guy on another team that can try coaching him from a new angle.

Guys like Zadina/Veleno need to be locked in a room for a weekend and forced to watch clips of Draper/Maltby and what they brought to the Red Wings.
I'm just confused with what it is that Cleary actually does. Turning a busting high draft pick into a useful middle 6 winger should be the one thing he knows how to do.

Hopefully he gets claimed..

Arizona
Chicago
Montreal(maybe)
SJ

Could all take a stab at home in hopes he becomes something with no negatives if he dosent

If I'm being honest I'd be annoyed if Zadina took off on some other team. It's not like he wasn't given plenty of opportunities to succeed here with the Wings and under two different coaches.

and here i was thinking finally Yzerman was filling out the depth to have a supporting cast around Zadina for his ascent to superstardom...

Finally this should have been done like a year and a half ago what a waste of one of the highest draft pick we had had in 18 years. Rasmussen and then Zadina the one two franchise KO punch.

Not to sound like a know it all, but I was not over the moon with him. Why? Because the Q is terrible.

It was horrible forward draft class in general. So many 1st round busts.

Look at those guys. Only Brady Tkachuck and this non-injuring Svechnikov are decent stars.

All others from that 2018 class 1st rounders are mediocre crap.

But hey, at least we have Jonathan Berggren, who is a nice pick as a 2nd rounder. One of the best picks of this draft. The silver lining.

He is gonna feed Daniel Sprong to 20 goals at next season, nothing that Zadina could ever dream about.
