Bottom line is we all knew he was on his last straw to try and become an NHL player.

Zadina just help us take the band aid off faster...

We signed Kostin and Fischer both projects... and they both have more promise than Zadina.

We have known for a couple years now, that Zadina would not reach even close to expectations from the draft.

Overall its annoying when someone says "I want out"
But bottom line is "who cares, he isn't very good, and everyone knows it" (see waivers results)

This has crossed my mind too... Entirely possible that he fell because of something between the ears that those and other teams detected.

Maybe Holland and co. figured they could get through it with Zadina because they had (or at least they thought they had) conquered those types of issues with Mantha and AA

Or maybe they just like making the same mistakes over and over, lol. Fact of the matter is, Mantha and AA were still good value for their draft position. Zadina was not. At least Mantha and AA were somewhat entertaining despite being extremely frustrating to watch. There has been almost no entertainment value in watching Zadina.

I mean, maybe show a little grace for a 19 year old foreign kid not speaking his native language? How comfortable would you be as a 19 year old with a camera in your face?
Probably wouldn't have said anything TBH, and I wasn't a quiet kid either. I didn't start giving my management shit until after I got out of grad school, lol. (I worked for 6 years in between undergrad and grad school, so I was close to 30)

Klim Kostin feels like a extra 1st round pick.

- 2017 1st round 31st overall.

At some point this guy could have been a fair trade for Zadina.

Now it kind of is. Zadina will walk out as free man and we got Kostin for free (just money).
Don't have to hang on these guys. Transfer the value on another positions and move on.

I do recall caveating at the time that it might be a bit of a language barrier thing. But, I can only grant so much leeway in my opinion. There have been a lot of interviews of non-native English speaking 19 year old's since this one, and there were a lot before this one. This one bothered me.

This is funny. Like the time my mother in law said "this soup is vegetarian.....except for the chicken"

Were they right after they were demoted from their dream job? Seems like you have an agenda so we will have to agree to disagree.

A kid not making the NHL 4 months after he was drafted viewing it as a demotion? That sounds kind of... entitled?

This is why I want to start a project that evaluates prospects based on their early, mid and end of season rankings. My hypothesis is that players that rise a lot during the draft year become better players than the players that fall a significant amount during their draft year.

I've actually been working on just such a project over this past draft year. David Reinbacher, Tom Willander, and Leo Carlsson were probably the biggest risers (depending on how you measure it). Will Smith, Ryan Leonard, and Axel Sandin-Pellikka were not too far behind though.

1st round wins by Holland as GM:
Fischer - 1998
Kronwall - 2000

This is where it gets bad...
Smith - 2007 (kind of)
Sheahan - 2010 (kind of)
Mantha - 2013
Larkin - 2014

2nd round or later wins by Holland as GM:
Datsyuk - 1998
Zetterberg - 1999
Kopecky - 2000
Ericsson, Hudler, Filppula, Fleischmann - 2002
Howard, Quincey - 2003
Franzen - 2004

This is where it starts to get bad...
Abdelkader, Helm - 2005
Matthias - 2006
Nyquist - 2008
Tatar, Jensen - 2009
Jarnkrok, Mrazek - 2010
Athanasiou - 2012
Bertuzzi, Janmark - 2013
Hronek - 2016

So Holland's tenure from 1997 to 2004 was pretty solid. After that (2005 to 2018) it's like they forgot how to scout and only picked 4 middle-6 guys (Bertuzzi, Tatar, Nyquist, AA) an unmotivated 2nd line winger (Mantha) a middle pair defenseman (Hronek) a top line center (Larkin) and a bunch of bottom 6 talent.

13 years of absolute trash from Holland. I'd say the blame is very easily dropped at Holland's feet for not making radical changes to the scouting staff in 2008 when it was abundantly clear our prospect pool was empty. We're lucky Detroit didn't pick Sonny Milano instead of Larkin or we'd really be f***ed.
This is a terrible post

I believe Zadina is thinking like Bertuzzi. Sign a one year deal, ball out. The cap is going up then cash out. The problem is A) he sucks B) he might not even get an opportunity to get meaningful mins let alone make the time.
I truly dislike this kid. Such high hopes. He might be the biggest bust in red wings history....

Huh? Every single one of those players would have been drafted higher in a re-draft. Both Helm and Abby would have been first rounders (talk about weak draft year).

The issue with Kenny was that he couldn't get high end talent with late first and second rounders. Guess who else seems to be having the same issue?

It’s ok. The zadina is gone now he won’t hurt you.
Show me on this doll where he touched you.

The argument isn't that they would or wouldn't go higher in a redraft. The argument is that even though they are/were NHLers, they weren't that great. Holland drafted 2 NHL caliber defenders between 2001 and 2018. That's pitiful by any team's standards.

The scouting staff did an OK job of finding guys that could play lower in the lineup but Larkin is the only guy that is a legit 1st line talent of the bunch.

I think you would've made a better point by just listing the first and early second round flops:
- Svech
- Cholo
- Zadina
- Veleno (maybe)
- McIsaac (probably)
- Lindstrom (soon)
- Givani

That's a lot of misses in just his last 4 years.

Probably. Maybe I wanted to take a less negative approach to Ken Holland's scouting department.

There weren't better players to find behind Nyquist. Or Jensen. Or Tatar. Or Helm. Or Larkin.

There's only two better than Hronek or Mrazek, and one better than Bertuzzi (two if you count Saros, and good luck predicting goalies). All of these picks are about as good as could be.

Just add him to the list of Holland draft picks I was 100% certain would be star players:

Jurco
Tvrdon
Sproul
Nedomlel
Oulette
Hat Trick Dick
Smith
McCollum

And I'm some others, which probably says more about my eye for talent than anything and is why you can ignore any opinion I offer up here.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I hope you think all our recent draft picks suck.

Ah Sproul. Had such incredibly high hopes lol

I would think that there’s enough information out there about some previous draft classes to start analyzing them. Just looking at Bob McKenzie’s ranks pre-, mid, and post- draft season rankings.

Maybe once I get freedom from modeling out the impacts of the impending UAW strike for work, I’ll see if I can’t look into this.

Ahh, you twisted my arm.

Sorry, don't see a shitty entitled attitude. Just a young kid disappointed he is in the minors. It is ok if you are annoyed that he busted, but don't make up or blow things out of proportion.

I mean, maybe show a little grace for a 19 year old foreign kid not speaking his native language? How comfortable would you be as a 19 year old with a camera in your face?

Exactly. He clearly isn't speaking great english even in this interview, he seems to be using the words he knows well enough. Too much reading into this in my view.

So as a pro athlete in front of interviewers/media, you would just stand there and say nothing, staring blankly at the cameras? You are also an english speaker. Tons of Euro kids come over and are just doing the best they can to speak coherently and then we are over-reacting to it.

A kid not making the NHL 4 months after he was drafted viewing it as a demotion? That sounds kind of... entitled?

Any kid demoted, would be disappointed. If you want entitled go back and watch how Jason Spezza reacted when he got cut more than once by the Sens and sent to juniors/AHL.
