I was glad they extended Z, but also thought they gave him a bit more cash than he had earned up to that point - seemed like it was more about sticking it to Jones.

But, no question, he's earning that contract and then some.

doing some random stat analyzing because im bored, it’s not just this year Z has been stellar at home. when you combine last year’s home totals with this year’s….

he has 67 points in his last 56 home games. not to mention 206 (!!!) shots on goal. averaging nearly 4 shots on goal a game during this span.

He has a chance but he'd have to keep scoring at the recent bananas numbers. It would be harder than the Taylor Hall year - he really did "sneak in" in a way because all of Mackinnon, Draisaitl, Kucherov, McDavid, Matthews were just a little bit pre-prime. Werenski wouldn't be doing that, Mackinnon is pacing 128 pts!

Of course he's not going to win. He won't be over 100 points at this rate. Norris is much more within reach but Makar and Quinn Hughes have built up the bigger resume so far.

But in the same manner as Joe Burrow with the Bengals, he's clearly the most valuable player to his team if you consider his supporting cast and where the team projects as a whole.

It depends on what you mean by "at this rate". He can hit 100 pts if he keeps scoring like he has for the last month. That's what I meant by the recent "bananas" numbers.
He's not on pace for 100 and its not realistic to maintain this pace. He leads the NHL in ice time so he's going to start wearing down at some point because we have no other options on D.

If he does, great but we shouldn't expect it.

Reputation and previous resume work against him for major awards but I wouldn't be surprised to see him win the Norris or even the Hart. If season ended right now, Werenski would be the leading scorer of the team, would average most TOI of any player in the league and be tied for scoring lead of D-men with Makar, with higher P/GP and more goals. That might be Hart right there, a lot of the storylines would work in his favour - Columbus unexpectedly making the playoffs after an off-season tragedy, Werenski stepping up and taking his team to playoffs etc. Of course would depend on what other players and teams do and wether Werenski can maintain anything close to this crazy pace.

Guess he just does well in dead buildings :sarcasm:

Last spring I got the Jersey off Zach’s back on ice fan appreciation night. I was a little bummed because he always seemed so flat personality-wise to me. Was hoping for 13, 86, 10, or 24.
Kinda feeling now that I got a good pick after all in that random draw!

I feel like Z’s seemingly flat personality has majorly improved this year. he’s shown more personality this year than he has combined the past 8.

^^ For posterity, that's the January 24, 2025 podcast, here's a link. Interview starts around the 1:25:00 mark. It's advertised as a 4 Nations thing but lots of other stuff, Evason stories (well non-story but self-reflecting), Torts insight, Michigan/OSU for those who care (happy to see Zach stand his ground, I think it's good character), leadership (some actual details, like that we don't need a 70-goal Matthews if we can all pull in the same direction, a little story towards the end)... He even alludes that he might write a book or go on a podcast after his career is over and spill stories. Damn. Here's hoping! Surprisingly good long interview, it's 30 minutes. Touches on Marchand, McDavid, isn't coy. I think Zach gets going in a longer interview, he's a great talker here and fun to listen to. He gets more and more relaxed every year, more confident in himself.

Very much recommend the interview. For the things he talks about but also the confident way he goes about it.

Maybe I’m just being dumb, but where did this burst come from? Werenski has always been a pretty good skater, but his stride always kinda looked like Nash’s where he was skating hard and fast, but didn’t always look like it

He pokes the puck, disappears behind the crowd, and the next time you see him he’s blasted by everyone

He's done it a few times this year, looks like he's really been working on it this off-season.

He may not win the Norris but if he continues on this pace and this play the rest of the year, it would have to be the best single season of a player in CBJ history. Surpassing the Nash Rocket year, the Mason rookie year, and Bobrovsky vezina years (and any other season you want to put up here).

I feel like this is the first time he's had a full off-season without having to rehab something as well. I'm sure it's actually not but it sure feels like it.
It's been a mixed bag with him and injuries in the past but clearly he made some significant changes in his training this offseason. The diet will help the stamina but I'm curious how his training looked in terms of strength/explosiveness/etc compared to before.
