Player Discussion Zach Hyman

Strudwick made a good point about Hyman on the got your back podcast. You might see some easy tap ins for Hyman on the highlight reels but that's only because he works his ass off to put himself in that spot. Those arent tap ins for most guys because they dont go to those hard areas.

He is an all-star for sure... Just needs to clean up on untimely goalie interferences, offsides, interference picks on PPs etc... I guess all of the above is part of what makes him Zach the plow Hyman...
You make him sound like he’s Milan Lucic.

He’s just fine doing his thing his way. First star this week, must be doing something right.

That's just it. We've heard this many time as Connor and Leon get pucks to the net for what is an easy tap in, but if it was that simple why aren't others on this team able to take advantage of that?

It's a perfect storm. You have a guy willing to go to the net for the tap in and you have guys that can actually get it there for him to tap it in.

Really feels like he’s the team’s MVP nowadays (honourable mention to Nuge, particularly earlier in the season).

Remember when we signed him and the majority of the fan base hated the deal? Now it's one of the best value contracts in the league.

Lots of posters with egg on their face.
To be fair, the majority of people who hated the deal hated it because of its length. Which is still a legitimate concern. Some players certainly age well into their mid 30s, but most don't.

Maybe I remember things different. I recall that Hyman signing with Edmonton was the worst kept secret in the league. Obviously everyone liked Hyman because come on it's hard not to. Fans liked the player but hated on Holland for overpaying on both AAV and length. Hyman never scored more than 41 points with Toronto and had some serious injury concerns. I dont even think even the most optimistic fans would have thought he would put up 60 points in 49 games.

Also maybe it's just me but when fans say "the AAV is fine but the length is too long" or "the length is fine but the AAV is too high" its beyond frustrating. You usually have to overpay UFAs and the price/term are correlated. It's the same type of fans that want to give up peanuts in a trade but get back a stud.

Hyman was an absolute steal. Like their was a time where he was being compared to blake coleman ffs. It's easy to look back and think that it was an easy move and everyone supported the move but that was simply not the case. Luckily people were actually able to watch him play and he won over a lot of fans very quickly into his Oilers career.

Some people here were comparing Hyman to Kassian.

I’m not even kidding.

I'm imaging a world in which we didn't sign Hyman. It's 2026, Draisaitl and McDavid have both left Edmonton because the Oilers couldn't build a competitive team around them. They didn't make the conference finals in 2022 and missed the playoffs in 2023. They've gained $20 million in cap space from McDrai walking.

Posters on HFOil are saying "at least we aren't spending $5.5 million on Hyman right now"

I don't remember that at all. Some people didn't like it, but there's always some people who don't like something.

I can totally accept that Bunting is a better bang for your buck on his >$1 million salary but anyone who thinks he is actually a better player than Hyman is kidding themselves.

Bunting is also a UFA at the end of this season and all of this tire pumping is going to make him demand a Hyman-like payday. This is the exact kind of situation that got the Leafs in trouble in their Marner/Matthews negotiations.

Seeing the whole fanbase turn on him when he Nylander's them is gonna be hilarious.
