Detroit just fleeced Carolina and it only took a 3rd (Detroit traded for Nedeljkovic). Is Tom Dundon really this cheap? What is the reasoning behind giving up on your calder candidate this early? Did Ned want out? I'd really like the Carolina faithful to make sense out of this trade for non fans. Just seems absolutely dumb on Carolina's part to let him go for so little.

The only thing that makes sense from a Canes perspective is that they’re lining up another move. They had the cap space to sign Ned and he’s well liked by all accounts.

If you’re going to trade a Calder finalist on a modest contract, you do it to a team that’s unlikely to make it hurt in the foreseeable future. Yzerman may very well have just had this fall into his lap without a lot of negotiation.

The only thing I was able to find out after doing minimal digging was Ned was offered 1.5m and wanted closer to 3-3.5m. Not sure if this is accurate but it would make sense seeing as how Detroit signed him to a 3mx2 contract. I think most teams, that are not up against the cap, would take a chance on a 2 year 3m contract for a player like Ned.

That just screams cheap.... unless there is some crazy stuff going on in the background that no knows about.

But the Canes are a cap team. This isn’t about cutting costs.

As a Wings and Canes fan, I'm conflicted on this. Sad to see Ned leave Carolina, but also a little suspicious about how he'll perform with a garbage defense in front of him. We shall see.

Last time Yzerman was relevant was mid-late 90's...he couldn't even get TB over the hump, they are so much better without him.

Everything I have read about the Canes owner is that he is cheap. Maybe he just didn’t want to pay him. It’s a shame because I think if Carolina added a piece or two they could really content for the cup.

I wouldn't decide if a trade was fleece or not before 1 or 2 seasons. Nedel could really suck in Detroit, and Bernier could really thrive in Carolina.
Nobody knows whats going to happen yet.

He never went anywhere, last I checked. Having to clean up the God awful mess left behind by Ken Holland was going to take a little time, to say the least.

This 1000%

Stevie Y never left the game.
He will turn Detroit into a powerhouse once again....great track record as a player, an executive, and his wheels always turned on the ice.....and they are ALWAYS turning in the GM's chair.

This deal for Ned is fantastic.
Might he have found the Wings' version of Andrei Vasilevskiy?

Time will tell of course, but Yzerman understands that without, good long term goaltending, the team will amount to not very much.
He is hard at work addressing that, along with, I am pretty sure, trying to strengthen that defense with his patented large, good skating core types.

WTG, Mr. Yzerman and Wings fans should be excited for this move to see what Ned can really do when the onus is put on him completely to man that net!

You are absolutely right... at this stage it just has the potential to look really bad for Carolina in the future. If Ned doesn't thrive in Detroit though it was still a low risk, high reward gamble. I'll take those odds.

Fleeced?

Maybe let's wait to see how Nedelkjovic does playing for Detroit instead of playing behind a ridiculously good Carolina team before we call it getting "fleeced", no?

Nedelkjovic let in a bunch of softie stinkers in that Tampa Bay series. I'm not convinced he's going to be this great starter moving forward.
