Meanwhile Eakins actually does throw something at someone, and he's twice as old as Hall. So if Hall getting mad shows a character flaw, what does that say about Eakins throwing a fit about getting his suit wet?

I agree. I don't agree at all with what Eakins did in response. But Hall should have shown more character IMO.

I'm not so sure about that. Krueger had the special teams going and nothing else.
Short season, no training camp, and he had them playing okay defensively... something to build on. Continuity would have been very good at that point.

Where are we now?

Edit: Also Eakins has a far superior line up to what Krueger was given. MacT has made some good player personnel moves, all offset by his coaching move.

Honestly Renney should have been kept. He's a better coach than either of Krueger or Eakins and had real NHL experience.

The team went from 62 points to 74 points (a respectable improvement) with minimal/crap additions from Tambellini under Renney and we still canned him.

All three of Hall, RNH, and Eberle played great under him too (Eberle and RNH played their best hockey under him) and he has a good pedigree in working with European players too so there's a fair chance he would've handled Yakupov's development better too.

Does anyone think one of the great leaders of Edmonton Oiler history, Mark Messier, would resort to throwing inanimate objects at the floor? Nope. He would throw elbows at heads and fists at faces of the opposing team. Then he would nonchalantly pick up any teammate who wasn't giving it his all and use him as a wall hanging.

How old are you? Are you kidding? If there was ever a player who would throw a water bottle it was 11.

A 21-year-old Messier? After 3+ years of losing? Losing 8-1? I could see him throwing a water bottle. It's not a big deal, players throw things/smash their stick/kick the boards/punch a wall all the time.

This just happened to splash water on our style savvy head coach and the coach flipped.

This guy probably also thinks Hall is a baby for wearing Kevin Lowe's number 4.

Whatever. I watched Mess his entire career. If you want to split hairs...so be it. My point is that Hall shouldn't be throwing a tantrum on the bench when things do not go his way. Messier can be excused for doing that, because he brought it to the ice as well.

I completely disagree . I would be upset if he didn't. Good for him.

You like it when players throw fits on the bench? Hahahah alrighty then.

Where's this show of passion on the ice? CBC pointed out SEVERAL times where Hall glided back into the defensive zone. That is one of my biggest concerns.

It's one thing to be porous defensively, but you can't play defense if you aren't even in the right zone!

The problem is Eakins is so stupid he acknowledged the water on his suit. Should have acted like nothing happened an the media wouldnt have noticed.

Now the whole world noticed what a ***** storm Edmonton is and everyone is under the microscope even more.

A truely incompetent idiot coaching the Oilers. Oh dummy btw kudos on metaphorically throwing a towel right after.

If they didn't realize it after the first jersey toss, the "Lowe must go" signs, the fan rallies, the Yakupov ice time saga, etc...

Well, you get the idea.

Great job Eakins. Now that is 2 of our first overall picks you have embarrassed and marginalized in public. What's next? Gonna start calling RNH names? It is one thing if he is a stanley cup winning coach, but this guy didn't even prove himself in the minors.

Multiple players have shown their frustration and through emotional outbursts during the year and Eakins has been supportive of it everytime, this one was an exception cause he got wet. If he didn't get wet I don't think he would of said a word, his constant preening is getting a bit annoying. I'm genuinely curious if MacTavish said you can continue to be the head coach of the Oilers but only if you shave your head, if he actually would or if he would just quit on the spot.

Bottom line for me is he got into public altercations with 2 of our 3 1st overall picks. These are the players that are most capable of turning this franchise around for us, if he doesn't have a good working relationship with them he shouldn't be around.

Not to mention if people think Slats or Teddy would have just taken that without ripping into Mess right there on the bench you'd be very wrong.

My view on Eakins:

The bottom line is the results are not there. This is a better team than last year (on paper), but we've made no progress, and instead have fallen back to the basement. I can't see a reason to blame our top players when they have put up consistent points and effort. When guys who go to a new team (Dubnyk, Smid, Bryz) all say that the practices with their new teams are more intense, that says something about us. And that comes down on the coach. Get rid of Eakins please.

I wonder what would happen if a player simply punched a coach in the face. Would there be a brawl? Would other players jump in to save the player or the coach? The other coaches, what would they do? How would the media portray them?

Not saying it should happen, just a genuinely curious question that came to mind.
Latrell Sprewell punched or choked (I can't remember which) PJ Carlisemo years back. Many former players of the coach said he probably deserved it. I can't remember hearing anything about anybody rushing to help Carlisemo. Sprewell got a lengthy suspension and a big fine. He was never the same player again after that.

Am I the only one who thinks Eakins shouldn't be fired? How coaches do you have to go through before you realize it's the the players that are not working. You simply can't go through a new coach after every season.

Almost every player has changed since 2009/2010. I think Gagner and Jones are the only 2 from that season left. This team is worse than last years team, but better on paper. Eakins still maintains that his system is infallible and is merely being failed at by the players. He isn't the right coach for this team. It would be a bad decision to stick with a coach that they know isn't working just because of the optics of how changing coaches again would look.

Totally agree. The first step is acknowledging that there is a player problem. The next step is to solve it by trading the problems, while they still have value. My concern is that Klowe and company will not acknowledge the problem and so will not do what is necessary. Not holding my breath.

You can't go through 4 coaches in 4 seasons. What message is that sending to the players? If you don't like your coach you can play like a crap and you'll get a new one next year? It's time to have some accountability.

Wouldn't that be firing a coach which has produced lesser results across the board with a more talented roster and an easier schedule?
