This thread is ridiculous. Most of the posters haven't got a clue that the season was lost 20 games in and that the team has been improving since then.

It's simple arithmetic that anyone with a grade 6 education can prove to themselves.

Over the last 5 years you have needed to get 1.117 points per game on average to make the playoffs. In the first 20 games, the Oil was at 0.5 points per game - 12.4 points behind the pace after a mere 20 games (4-14-1-1 record).

It was over then. Done.

To make the playoffs after game 20, the Oilers then had to play at a 1.316 points per game rate for the remaining 62 games. That means for the remaining 62 games they had to play as well as Pittsburgh and Chicago and better than LA has this season just to make the playoffs.

There was no chance of that.

However, since Jan. 15th when the Hendricks/Dubnyk deal and the Scrivens deal was made, the Oilers have played at a 1.091 points/game pace which would have put them only 2 points out of the playoffs if they would have played that way all year.

Most people would have been satisfied with a year where the Oil had only missed the playoffs by 2 points. They have been playing at that pace since Jan. 15/14.

That's a big improvement since the first 20 games when they were on pace of finishing out of the playoffs by 50 points. That's a huge difference.

People who haven't seen improvement simply aren't paying attention, because if the Oilers play like they have been playing the last 2 months for a full season, they will be in a playoff race on the last game of the year. It's bad enough that this thread is full of whiners, but dumb and lazy whiners should be forced to be Canucks fans.

Well this speech didn't work. There goes the Alamo.

Our coach loses his sh&t cause he got water on his jacket, benches the player who accidentally did it. Changes his jacket. Our coach is embarrassing.

Half serious post - can we buy (veiled as a trade) Tippett from Phoenix during the off season? The Coyotes need money and we need a coach that will command respect and teach the players how to win. The Oilers have to take advantage of the assets the few they have and one of them is money.

I know, but the new owners do not have deep pockets and they bought the team using a loan from an organization that is basically a legal version of a loan shark (9% APR). They could use any revenue stream they can get their hands on at this moment (unless the goal all along for them has been to move the team after five years).

They want him there, he wants to be there, and if money becomes an issue(ie, they can't make a go of it anymore), the location agreement is up in a few years and they can move the team to a better market.

Well there were a few coaches that were traded for picks in the late '80s, but I believe trading team personal (coaches, GM's, etc.) has been since prohibited in the CBA.

Eakins needs to go. Some great goaltending coming off trades gave us a good stretch, but tonight exposed that the team is still rotten. Zero push back, zero "team".

And it's pretty clear from events and comments that Eakins has zero connection with the players, sounds like it's more coach VS players than coach AND players.

http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/2013/03/24/lightning_face_tough_decisions_after_firing_of_coach_guy_boucher_cox.html

I dislike Cox's work. However, looking into why Boucher got fired (because i have my suspicions on why Eakins system isn't working) i stumbled unto a few paragraphs i would like to share here.

While Roloson, then 41, stood on his head, coach Guy Boucher was acclaimed as the NHL’s newest genius. Steve Yzerman, a rookie GM, was heralded as a brilliant thinker who proved a quick fix was possible amidst a league filled with slow rebuilding projects. New owner Jeff Vinik, so it seemed, had the magic touch.

Really, however, it was a mirage built around Roloson somehow playing the best hockey of his career at age 41, which allowed Boucher to succeed with some gimmicky tactics — remember the regrettably negative 1-3-1 scheme? — that masked the absence of meaningful depth on the roster.

The fantasy that this was already a good team and not a team in need of careful rebuilding exploded last year and this season, when Roloson ran out of gas and Boucher couldn’t come close to replicating those results from the spring of 2011.
The former Hamilton Bulldog coach’s time as genius officially ended Saturday night after a loss against Ottawa, when he became the 20th NHL head coach cashiered in the past two years.

I find this very interesting.

Eakins is a Gremlin, when you get water on him he gets all pissy and annoying.

What do you mean when? :D

Is there another Dallas Eakins?

The jacket thing is just indescribable. This org is giving Flames fans material for years.

Payback for ripping the tongue out of Harvey the hound.

Mactavish and his small sample sizes that convinces him on things has got to change he only needed one shift of seeing Klefbom to figure he was ready, He hired Eakins because he was so impressed at how his team was prepared for a faceoff in a AHL game. This is the stupidity we are dealing with this management.

MacT was like 'OMG, none of his fwds ever play more than 3 shifts on the same line, they waited til the playoffs to put the two guys who are playing with casts on their hand on a line together, and they have a stay-at-home defenseman on right wing. This guy must be rockin' my blend-o-matic 2000 v2.0 line combo software. Pure genius.'

Fire him. I've been supportive in the past, but enough is enough. His 'systems' are a disaster, and he refuses to change them. We'd be fighting for a playoff spot right now if we had kept Krueger. I've liked MacTs moves but firing him was a big mistake.
