You guys are getting Nic Petan wrong. He's been one of the best players in the tournament, he's just not been as flashy as Nylander or Domi or Ehlers while doing. Petan is the type of player that seems quiet but is strong in every facet of the game and who can produce points as well as anyone else.

He also goes for the higher risk plays. I think he probably has one of the highest turnover rates for Canada. They're not exactly risky plays in the sense that it puts his team in a bad position, it just is the type of play that's more prone to a turnover.

LOL no. Go venture to the Sabres WJC thread and read my rants about flashy players

My parents warned me against going there.

Yeah, I know. I'm have some Danish blood - I have a Danish last name and it ends with "sen." It makes for terrible mispronunciations all the time. Now whenever I see someone trying to read my name, I just tell them what it is so they don't botch the pronunciation.

Had always wondered by it was "sen" rather than "son" as I thought it meant "son of..." Thanks for clearing that up.

It does mean son of...or used to.

The good thing is terms of pronounciation is that its usually only when north americans write the name that the problem arrives. You basically pronounce it the same anyway. I can't tell the difference when NHL commentators pronounce the surname of Craig Anderson vs. Frederik Andersen, but there would be a clear difference if a dane said it.

Cool about your danish heritage!;-) I have a name that ends with sen too.

Hmm... didn't know that. I probably horribly mispronounce my own name (born and raised in Canada), but suffice to say, every non-Scandinavian/Dane seems to think it's a silent 'K' at the beginning.

Wow, I'm actually shocked at the Petan hate in this thread. I can't believe that you guys don't think he's done anything that stands out. You know, maybe you should start actually watching some of these games, then maybe you would have seen the roof job he did that will go down as one of the goals of the tournament.

And people talk about Sweden having bad defense..

1. Ehlers
2. Nylander
3. Sorensen
4. Domi
5. Larkin
6. Bjorkstrand
7. Pastrnak
8. Reway
9. Petan
10. Duclair
11. Butcher

Yeahhhh , hate Petan... we know you want him om your team :yo:
Petan does not flash you with blinding speed, but he can make those awesome passes..
in 2 years, it will be to the player who is first on this list :D......

Lots of hockey still to go, but here's my prelim list. Not just scoring leaders, but those with skill who have impressed me most:

1. Domi
2. Bjorkstrand
3. Ehlers
4. Eichel
5. Nylander
6. Fiala
7. Reinhart
8. Reway
9. Buchnevich
10. Pastrnak

HM: McDavid, Larkin

While I agree most of these have looked good...

But where on earth is Petan? I'm by no means a Jets fan and MAN... that guy is magic. I'll say Domi has played better, but Domi is clearly playing with better linemates most of the time.

Petan is almost as magical as Domi on every shift. Like Domi he's constantly creating quality scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates when it looks like there's not a whole lot of room to make anything happen.

Also: Nylander isn't impressed me a ton.

Aho is the best D in this tourney, so far.
Buchnevich is dominating.
Nylanders nifty passes and zone entries is magic.
Sörensen in goal for Denmark has impressed. He and Ehlers gave Denmark a chance for a QF spot.

Guilty as charged. I'm as regional as the next guy. Couldnt figure out a way to slide Compher and Hanifin in there.

When it comes to Petan you should notice that he have scored his poits against slovakia and germany. No points against finland.

My list from the Montreal group because that's where I've seen the most games. Going to the games makes it tough to catch the other group.

Canada: Max Domi, Anthony Duclair, Connor McDavid, Brayden Point
U.S.A.: Anthony DeAngelo, Sonny Milano, Hudson Fasching, Alex Tuch
Finland: Julius Honka, Artturi Lehkonen, Roope Hintz, Juuse Saros
Germany: Frederik Tiffels
Slovakia: Martin Reway, Denis Godla

Only from Montreal group as I've seen only highlights from the other group:

1. Domi
2. Reinhart
3. Réway
4. Eichel
5. Godla
6. Duclair
7. Petan
8. Tuch
9. Husso
10. Rantanen

You must be getting a very different perspective live because I'm scratching my head on a lot of these. Larkin has been head and shoulders the best American, and even if Eichel hasn't played up to his hype he's definitely been a top 4 player.

Also Brayden Point has been down right invisible. I can name a handful of Canadian players that have outplayed McDavid (understandable considering the injury).

Larkin's OK, I have nothing against him. His line was by far the best against Slovakia but I didn't find him terribly noticeable against Finland. Maybe he shone in the Germany game as I didn't see most of that one but on the other hand...it's Germany. I wouldn't call him the head and shoulders best by any means.

Eichel has been pretty disappointing to me so far and I'm shocked to see him on so many lists. TSN must be pumping his tires like crazy in anticipation of their draft specials. He and McDavid have similar point totals but I've found McDavid to be by far the better player all around. I'm not at all questioning Eichel's talent but I think he's gripping the stick too much or trying to do too much by himself. I'm not really sure what he's done to be considered a top 4 player in the tourney, you can pretty easily argue that he's been outplayed by (or at least on par with) all of Canada's, Sweden's and Finland's top players to me.

I think Point has done really well in the role he's been given. At the very least, he's impressed me. I guess technically I should have picked Petan over him but I'm not surprised by Petan racking up points against Germany and Slovakia whereas I have been pleasantly surprised with Point's game so that's why I gave him the nod.

Anyway, we're talking about 3 game sample sizes. It's not like I'm trying to say Point will be a better NHLer than Eichel just because I've liked his game enough over the past week to mention one and not the other.

Some interesting comments. But the tourney is really just getting interesting. Points against Germany etc are not as important as the games coming up. I'll be watching to see who steps up when it really counts.

McDavid on this list...but not Reinhart...

I mean...

I know you actually have to pay attention to Reinhart to see what he does all over the ice since he isn't zipping around taking your eyes with him...but for the love of all that is holy...come on. This joke that he's a passenger on his line...I mean...I don't even know what to do with people anymore.

I honestly think that Nic Petan has been the most dangerous non-Max-Domi player for Canada in the tournament. I'd probably say in no particular order,

Domi
Petan
Reinhart
Nylander
Puljujarvi (how many posts has this guy hit?)
Forsling
Bjorkstrand
Demko
Sorensen
Reway

Amazing how many lists are either leaving out Reway or have him near the bottom. He's been Slovakia's offense.

Reinhart has been amazing. The most steady and error-free player on the ice, always in the right place at the right time.

After watching him a bit in Buffalo earlier this season I was a bit underwhelmed, but this tournament has brought back confidence... he is going to be a fantastic center once he's given a real chance in Buffalo.
