He has been one of the premier playmakers in the nhl since being drafted. He's been a fan favourite for years. That being said... he's been trash this year. I'm not sure if it's just disinterest, or he's becoming stagnant playing the same role with the same players year after year, but its been noticeably bad.

One of the core 4 have to go. This team isn't winning any trophies they way its built. I'm a big fan of keeping Nylander over Marner.

This isn't intended as a mock or argument thread. I'm just genuinely interested what fans of individual teams would be willing to offer to take Marner at the trade deadline.

1.5 years remaining @ 10.903 cap hit.
Marner = NMC

Toronto will be disappointed.

he returns a 1st (24-32), a decent but not top 15 pick prospect, and a salary player of around 5M if team has cap space.

if cap neutral it prrobably is 2 players making 9M and a late 1st.

This is the part where a "99" point Selke finalist is worthless right HF?

Not worthless - if Toronto wanted to blow it all up and look for picks and prospects coming back then he’d fetch a solid return as a deadline rental next year. But the combination of his high cap hit, short but not expiring term, and the Leafs’ presumed desire to remain semi-competitive rather than do a proper rebuild make him difficult to move at the moment. The short term along with the inability to negotiate an extension means that only competitors looking to win now would be interested in him, while the high cap hit makes it difficult for any such team to fit him into their roster; combine that with the fact that no competitor is looking to kill their depth or downgrade from a more impactful player and you have a situation where it’s nearly impossible for Toronto to trade him without losing heavily in the deal.

Again, you’d get the best value moving him for picks and prospects, but that doesn’t make sense unless Toronto’s either going into a full rebuild or has a plan to flip those futures for some help now.

And all this assumes that Marner is the main piece in the deal. If Toronto wants to add to him in order to trade for an upgrade that might be possible, but again the cap hit and short term limit your options.

Problem is not the player, but rather the contract, term and NMC. Teams that would be interested in Marner would be contenders, but they probably don't have the cap. A team with cap, probably isn't contending until after his contract needs to be renewed.

Does a team like Nashville feel they are a Marner away from making a solid run in the playoffs? Are they confident they can do that without Saros?

Marner, Samsonov +
for
Saros, Barrie +

Not sure what the plus would be from either side.

I’ve always liked Marner. Heart and soul guy with tons of talent. With another franchise, he’ll become a winner.

This will go against the grain of our fan base wanting futures for our UFAs but let’s say Edwards mandate is still the present.

Marner for Lindholm/Hanifin and Dube

Would love to swap Huberdeau for Marner but that is never happening.

I think Zary-Kadri-Marner would be fire.

I think people are underestimating his value. There’s a number of teams without a top center who would be willing to pony up significant assets for a very good two way center despite his playoff struggles.
Have him center a line with two bigger physical players and I think he could really take that next step in the playoffs.
The only thing limiting his value somewhat is the NMC as he can dictate where he goes assuming he partially waives it.

No to trading Marner, no matter what we will be a worse team without him

I think they’ve got to be getting back a top young D if they’re trading Marner. Otherwise what’s the point?
Gotcha besides maybe Owen Pickering Pittsburgh lacks defensive prospects. Thought maybe a change of scenery trade for both teams for players that are both capable of hitting 40 goals. Guentzel is UFA but wasn’t sure if Toronto was looking to clear some cap space.

I disagree. I would assume they would want a player who can contribute right away rather than a young D that still needs to time to develop. Unless you're referring to a young, top 4D, to which I don't think Marner pulls that with his term.

I don't think so, Nylander is the guy you can flip for a D man if needed. To replace Marner we would need an elite PK player, elite PP QB and a 1st line winger

He's a very talented player, but as his price point, and with how soft he is, I'm not interested even as a free agent.

He's a great player, but I don't think he has what it takes to deliver in the playoffs without being heavily insulated physically and I'm just not interested.

This is the part where a "99" point Selke finalist is worthless right HF?

He's far from worthless, but his contract and his playoff track record complicate his value for sure.

There isn't really a way to guess the trade value of a player with a NMC. They are in total control of where they play and eliminate most buyers.

Alright I'll bite.

From a Vancouver point of view and with the assumption it's a hockey trade with moving parts both ways.

To Toronto: T. Myers, A. Kuzmenko and one of V Podkolzin or L Karlsson. Cap: 11.795 million or 12.4 ish million

To Vancouver: M.Marner, R Reaves and a toss between Lagesson or Lajoie on the blue line. Cap: $13.1 ish million

Similar contract lengths and cap structure. Literally ONLY predicated on a moving parts basis and with the belief that Toronto would actually want to shuffle roster spots.

No chance this happens though and is most likely not close to comparable value

For the record, I think Marner is one of the best play making wingers in the game and gets a bad rep. He may be slightly overpaid by a million ish but I think he's an amazing player and 100% a Lead for life and the org is lucky to have him.

Will be interesting to see how people will malign Marner though and then also say this isn't close to what he's worth
