I mean, tell yourself he was dealt a hell of a bad hand when he took over in 2012, they were dead last in the east in 2011-12.... From 2012-17 they were actual contenders for a few seasons under Therrien. The best Habs team we've seen since the early 90s.

agreed for Armia/Dvorak/Gallagher/Anderson as well as signing Hoffman. All awful moves, but unfortunately he wasnt going to just tank and leave, he was trying to save his job, as anybody would. You cant blame a GM for NOT tanking.
It's true that that were contenders one season. But it had nothing to do with Bergevin. It was all pieces who were there BEFORE him.
Price, Subban, Markov, Pacioretty were obviously the main pieces and they were with the team before.
Plekanec and Gallagher were nice supporting players. They were with the team before as well.
Only thing I would give him credit for is acquiring Vanek at the deadline.

After those 2-3 years in which he inherited the good roster he completed destroyed the team like few GMs in history have done with bad decision after bad decision. Which leads us to today and the 3 (soon to be 4) consecutive bottom 5 finishes. And almost 7 years of no playoffs (normal, non-Covid year).

Not mentioned enough by Leaf Fans:

The end of last season TOR already qualified for the playoffs. Keefe had Toronto playing Mega Shinny in order to get Matthews 70 goals, and Nylander 100 points. It was the worst kind of structure/system going into the playoffs.

Now that was embarrassing.

Agreed. It was a joke and they were playing extremely well until that.

I'm pretty sure most teams would take Adam Larsson over Taylor Hall. Hall had one great season after leaving Edmonton and that was it.

I was probably the only Devils fan that hated the Hall/Larsson trade because I knew it was gonna destabilize our defense for years to come and I was pretty much right on the money with that. Hall was a great Devil and undeniably a fantastic player his time here but a short term gain (which led to a 1st round exit) never really justified the trade.

In any event, getting scored on twice in the span of 90 seconds and blowing a playoff game seven against the Hurricanes in 2009 I think deserves to be in the conversation. One of the worst games in NJD history.

Calgary Flames, in no particular order:

Buying out Martin St. Louis
Trading Joe Mullen for a 2nd round pick because his "drop" in production meant he was washed up.
Proclaiming Mark Jankowski as one of the best players in his draft class.

Honourable mentions: 1990-1994 Seasons, drafting Trevor Kidd instead of Martin Brodeur
After Calgary won the Cup in 89 they made the playoffs 6 times in 7 years losing all 6 in the 1st round, 3 of them went to game 7 OT.

Why do I remember this? I was a Flames fan as a kid. I started following hockey just around the year after they won the Cup (so 89-90 or 90-91)..... All to say, I really chose the wrong team at that time. Those three game 7 OT losses were killer

1. Brendan Shanahan - new and learning on the job
2. Kyle Dubas - new and learning on the job
3. Sheldon Keefe - new and learning on the job

Multiple embarrassing moments to follow.

Lou and Babcock were more embarrassing than any of those people and the Matthews era is one of the least embarrassing in recent history...

1. Treating our first superstar Pavel Bure like crap and trying to pay him in Canadian funds when he was promised US funds. The franchise made Bure look like the bad guy.

2. Gretzky was considering playing for the Canucks and told Pat Quinn and management let me sleep on it. Apparently management couldn't wait and called the Great one in the middle of the night demanding a decision. Gretzky was turned off and left the Nucks in the dust.

3. Hiring Jim Benning and after a few years of incompetent general managing, Aqualini forces fans to go through 10 years of Bennings BS of missed draft picks and getting fleeced in trades.

HM

Blowing the lead in 2011 Cup finals against Boston.

Waiting to retire Bure's number only after he made the hockey hall of fame.
These are good. It's hard to pick just 3!

I agreed with the decision but the way the Boudreau firing went down.
The way they treated Larionov
Messier/Linden fiasco
Starting Lack over Luongo in Winter classic game
Losing after being up 3-1 vs Wild in playoffs
Bertuzzi/Moore => Crawford incident

gawd...so many...

1. Lots of tough playoff failures, but blowing 3-0 series lead to LA is clearly the worst
2. Sharkie gets stuck repelling from the ceiling causing a 15 minute delay
3. 10 goals given up in B2B games is pretty awful; also first team in NHL history to open B2B seasons with 9 straight losses.

Having your best team in decades not be able to make it any further than lesser Leafs teams of the past doesn't seem like a great point of pride.

Can you show me where I said I was proud? It seems weird to quote me to make up an argument.

The treatment of Guy Lafleur

I must say, the Chara/Pacioretty stuff with the phone calls is hilarious

I could list at least 4 involving Messier alone, and I'm not a Nucks fan.

This picture perfectly encompasses the question. In fact if the ask was top 10 most embarrassing moments, this picture alone would still be perfect.
A lot of Canuck fans wore paper bags on their heads during the Benning years.
