The situation with Dougie/Smith and being a game night means they had to wait a day to juggle the roster. They have a few days to maneuver the roster and they have the cap space. Relax. Wee have to assume that Luke, Bahl, and maybe Nemec get better defensively with more experience. If not, you trade for defenders. We certainly have the horses on offense, especially after the Toffoli trade. And now with the cap space, we can even afford a trade for a Blake Coleman-esque defensive forward. Just take salary for this year only.

He also hasn’t been good in three years and is now regressing after a hot start. You can’t have that contract on the books. It kills you if it doesn’t work. They can take on a guy with a year because that is a minimal buyout, anymore than that is very very risky.
