What’s the difference between these two teams? What could it be…

Disclaimer: not saying the meter is the end all be all, just making a goaltending point ;)
Meh. Maybe they scratch out a point (which doing that more often would have them in a more comfortable position).

But it is important to remember Boston had the the Devils hanging by a thread after they went up 2-0 to the point the Bruins tied it at 2. Then VV shit the bed to make it 4-2 quickly.

After that score effects kicked in. So if VV makes a few stops then that pressure from Boston likely continues until the they eventually tie it anyways IMO. That third period which probably tilted the meter a bit doesn’t happen.

I don't think the meter is that off tonight though. We were good in the 1st and mostly in the 3rd.

It was the stretch in the middle of the 2nd that cost them the game.

They most likely deserved an OTL in this but Vitek couldn't save an extra goal or two
Goals 1 and 4 were bad.

He caused goal 1 with the turnover and goal 4 was definitely stoppable.

Goal 5 was in garbage time after we were pressing.

I will say the Luke goal on Ullmark wasn't a good one on him either.

The Capitals have scored 81 goals, only San Jose has scored fewer. Charlie Lindgren having the season of his life is the only thing they have going for them, they aren't a threat.

So no one else was saying to themselves in the second period when the Devils were hemmed in their own end almost the whole time "it's only a matter of time before the Bruins score at least a couple of goals if not more"? Most people on here were thinking "this is fine, an average goalie should be able to get us out of this."?

Really? OK.

I must say I like Ryan's work but this tweet is a bit confusing lol

The back-to-backs and lack of preparations at the start of most games is a coaching issue.. so we need a goalie change? Lmao

Dont get me wrong, I do think Vitek needs to go soon or at the end of the year; but its funny that we point out coaching flaws then immediately say we need a new goalie.

Ive tried really really hard to give Ruff all of the benefit of the doubt.. but I dont think its working in my favor

They're a joke squad at this point. Too many old players, too many dying players. Even the guys that aren't that old are declining and not good anymore.

No real young talent that are any good either. It's nothing but a has-been team. Looks like a team that's a mixed of retired players and younger players that aren't good enough to play for good teams. That's all it is.

Did Pacioretty come back yet? Another 35 year old that we forget is still in the NHL. Probably because he's only played about 40 games in the last 2.5 seasons.

Most people here were aware we were getting hemmed in by the Bruins pressure. It'd be sweet if the goalie bailed us out once in a while though. 1 or 2 more saves would've kept us in the game. Guys had more jump in the 3rd.

We needed one more save in that sequence. Many teams sometimes get multiple more saves in sequences like that. Im watching the replay of Rags Lightning and Tampa are having many multiple minute sequences like this but rags are getting saves

So I was team bad d play and bad goaltending in October and November. Both needed to improve

I have seen vast improvements in the Dzone play. Its not perfect, but its much better.

I am at the end of my leash with Vitek. We need to move on. I hope to god he makes me eat crow, but this cant continue
And no one is asking for stellar play from Vitek. League average like .903 or something. Give me like .895-.900 from someone and we should still make the playoffs if healthy.

One of Ruff's problems that he CAN control is he's excessively hitched his wagon to Vitek. Vitek's November was absolutely abhorrent, while Schmid's was solid and yet Vitek played more games than not.

He throws Vitek in there for games that we thought maybe he wouldn't even play, like the Detroit game (the November one I mean) and then the Rangers game, where he was literally the difference in a close game.

Doesn't he know he doesn't have Hasek anymore?

Every single team has points in a game where they get hemmed in.

That's when you goalie has to do his f***ing job. It's not complicated.

Yup. We were skating loads around Boston in their zone many times this game but we couldn't either get a good puck on net or when we did Ullmark made the save he needed to make.

I think we all knew our defensive play was going to be a little worse this year with the loss of Severson and Graves, but overall Nemec and Luke have been more than serviceable out there.

I just find it hilarious that some fans of this franchise want to put more of the blame on the D than goalie when our so-called #1 has a S% of around .880. League-wide S% is .903, basically Jake Allen and tied for 26th in S%. Vitek has played in 23 games so far and all the guys below him in S% have played a lot less. There is no reason to be giving him the bulk of the starts, especially when Schmid had a S% 15 points higher.

League average goaltending and we are in 2nd in the Metro. If we had .910 or above (top 18 in the NHL) we would be competing for 1st.

We don't need elite goaltending, just slightly above average and someone that isn't a rebound machine and always out of position.

And for the love of al things hockey, can we fix the complicated play in our own zone?

Vitek should be on his way to the ECHL it's not just this game its his play since last years playoffs. Instead of blaming the team for Viteks losses you should be praising the team for his wins ...IMO of course

So what is that the 3rd or 4th game already where we get blown up in a matter of minutes? Edmonton, Boston and Washington game 1?

Don’t remember any of these kinds of game from last year

The problem is Vitek making his move way too early which is giving the shooter ample time. He is guessing out there. That’s not good folks

This season is making me sad maaaaannnn.

They should be better than this. They have 2 major things holding them back as far as I'm concerned. Coaching/System and goaltending.
