You wouldn't trade a #1D on a budget team with 3 years of control left before he commands $10M+ on the open market for a franchise #1C who has at least 7 years of control? I guess we'll have to disagree on that.

That's fine, not surprising with the way you constantly post about how Karlsson is overrated and terrible defensively. He's much more than a #1 defenseman, he's the best defenseman in the entire NHL and a top 3-5 player in the entire world. Despite the general idea that we allow talent to leave, it's not true whatsoever. Melnyk will shell out the money needed for Erik Karlsson as he did with Ryan, MacArthur and Hoffman. Matthews is not a franchise #1 C yet but he is trending to become one. Your input on Karlsson lacks insight.

How do we get stuck with Andersen AND lose Galchenyuk in the process?

Seriously, Price has more worth to a team wanting to win.

Ill say Pitt because thats the team caps fans hate the most but its not a rivalry as Pitt doesnt care about the caps lol.

Ovi to pitt for the HBK line:sarcasm:

Vrana Kuzy Oshie
Bura Back Williams
Hagelin Bonino Kessel
Eller Beagle Mojo

cut/trade other forwards. I know the last line is all centers

On a serious note has a team ever traded for an entire successful line.

Rolling four lines like that would be tough.

Karlsson is much more then just a #1D and Matthews is not a franchise C yet.

He's a top 3 defenceman in the NHL, obviously. But you can't ignore the realities of an internal cap for Ottawa. With the bloated contracts that Ottawa already has on the books, once they sign Karlsson it will seriously impact their ability to field a competitive roster with so much of their internal cap tied up with Karlsson, Phaneuf, and Ryan.

Auston Matthews could be signed for an 8 year, $6M per deal after his ELC. And I'd take a franchise C making 3 years of ELC and then 8 years of $6M vs. a franchise D who is making potentially $10M upon contract renewal

No he's not. He's a top 3 defenceman in the NHL, top 10 player in the NHL.

I think there's a real possibility that the money that he used to pay those 3 won't necessarily impact how much he has for Karlsson. But once he's paid those guys AND Karlsson (and Phaneuf and what he's going to have to dish out to pay Stone), he's going to have both internal and league salary cap issues to roster the rest of his team.

Matthews isn't a franchise #1C yet, but the writing is pretty much on the wall. Watching him play against Ottawa should have hinted at that for you. To me, the cost control for a team like Ottawa is extremely valuable

I would rather trade Ovechkin to a Western team with chance to win the Cup for future considerations than ever even thinking about trading him to the Penguins.

i agree but as someone pointed out that is the thread. Which west team tho? Chi has its issues. Ana chokes every year. Sharks/Nash seems like the same chance he will have with the caps. Dallas=no goaltending. Kings may miss with out quick. Blues could work but again seems like same shot he has in wash.

and if it ever did happen (trade only) id still root for him but not against the caps. Hes the only cap that could go there and Id root for.

The general consensus around here is that Karlsson is the best defenseman in the NHL whether you agree with it or not. I don't see 4-5 players better than he is so I think he is within the top 5 group. Your entitled to your opinion but Karlsson has consistently been considered the best defenseman since the 11-12 season.

Onto Melnyk, so many people think that we won't be able to manage our salary yet we've done a remarkably good job doing so over the years. The budget isn't the worst thing in the world since it's actually limited us from throwing money out the window with UFAs. We have a handful of very good prospects who could step into NHL positions within the next 1-2 years (Brown, White, Chabot, Englund and others). The general idea is that Methot will most likely get claimed in the expansion draft thus giving us ~5M more to work with. One of Brown/White should be able to step into the NHL within the next few years and we could potentially move Brassard down the line. There aren't many fans worried about being able to fit his salary in while keeping the team competitive. He has proven that we will pay to retain talent and work around our core.

That was one game, Mike Green also scored a hat-trick against us but not many people are calling him a franchise #1 D. Matthews is going to be a very good player and I think may become a Top 10 C in the NHL which is something that the Leafs have needed since Sundin left. Despite your belief that Ottawa would jump at the chance to exchange Karlsson for Matthews, it's simply not true. There's only one player in the NHL that I would move Karlsson for and that's McDavid. Sure, Matthews being cost-controlled for so many years is interesting but not a big enough advantage to move Karlsson. He's got 3 years on his contract, the team will be vastly different by then so I don't see any reason to worry about whether or not he's going to re-sign.

Nathan MacKinnon to Detroit for the right to retire Uwe Krupp's number

Colorado just says no, Minnesota has nothing we want lol.

Closest rival who has anything worthwhile has to be another Central team like DAL or STL. DET & MIN both have the nursing home road trip bus parked outside the rink before every game.

I'd say you are adding to Lemieux, and heavily, except that there is nothing of note in Pittsburgh to warrant the liberty bell or Independence hall, let alone both. Maybe Fallingwater? We'll give you the Betsy Ross House, if you can find a time machine to give us 1988 Mario. Maybe. :sarcasm:
