#FireBabcock.

I jest, I jest.

But, really? Hunwick and Polak on the ice late in the 3rd? Holland as the #1 shooter in the shootout?

Like really?

hunwick played 22mins!! Gardiner and Carrick ~18mins switch thise numbers Gardiner has more chance to stick longer here than Hunwick let him try to defend last 5 mins if you have to pick 1 of the 2 Hunwick is not good enough.

Statistical recap.

Maybe change up the Holland and Kadri lines.

Bozak and Matthews lines seem to be fine, the other 2 lines need some attention.

Maybe Kapanen with Komarov and Kadri, something to bring some skill to that line.

Can't put Kapanen with Kadri because he's their 'shut-down' guy. I'd put Marner with him because he's been great defensively.

I think Bozak and Kadri's line needs changing up.
Komarov - Kadri - Marner
Hymen - Matthews - Nylander
JVR - Bozak - Michalek
Martin - Holland - Brown

You know that counts for literally nothing in professional sports right?

Are you upset your troll thread was closed?

For a young player, it shows a positive outlook when they're getting chances. More often than not, their luck will help out and they'll be finishing more of the those chances in future games.

Nylander and Matthews are gems. For sure. They both have the killer instinct.

I flip flop on Marner. People complaining about a fifth goal, if Marner actually shot the puck instead of trying to make the highlight reel, fifth goal would have been scored and the win sealed. That guy better learn that wins are important. That play pissed me off tonight. I hate when players lose sight of the main goal (win) and focus on being pretty. It's like they're not mentally where everyone else.

Maybe he still wants to play junior so he do all kinds of globe trotter garbage (while Nylander shoots from anywhere and Matthews will take any garbage goal).

It's fine to be pissed, believe me I know it's frustrating. But at the end of the day this is still a rebuilding team full of rookies. Defence is a huge concern right now that needs to be addressed. Most likely through the draft and development of defencmen through past draft. I'm happy as long as I see improvement and despite the blown leads it's very evident the talent on this team has increased 10 fold.

We might be blowing leads due to inexperience but what's being lost here is very good teams giving up 4 goals to us where we clearly look better. Once we strengthen the D and clean that up, we will be tough.

This is very true. The team, dare I say it, looks pretty good ridiculous meltdowns notwithstanding. Im especially impressed with Willy the Kid, he's been bringing it every night.

And on the 2nd goal one of Kadri/Gardiner blew their defensive assignments and let Motte stand in front of Andersen all by himself for the rebound.

And on the first goal, Zaitsev didn't take the passing lane from Panarin and Hunwick was out of position to take his man who scored.

Hunwick with (yet another) bad pinch, it was a poor read by Zaitsev but Leo is the real headscratcher, he's floating down the ice looking for something to do, with no thought of protecting the lane behind him. The guy who's part of our so-called "checking line".

Matthews tied for 2nd in league scoring and Nylander tied 3rd thats what makes me happy with these games our important future players are finding ways to score even with tip dmen playing against them. As said above we will fix the D when the time is right but the kids are playing great

Hunwick-Zaistev has been horrible all season long though. I thought Hunwick played his best game of the season tonight and it was still not good.

Marincin - Trouba
Rielly - Zaistev
Hunwick/Polak - Carrick

Play the **** out of the 1st and 2nd pairing. I'm all in for putting Rielly into a position to succeed, the kid needs easier minutes.

I think Hunwick-Zaitsev will work out eventually, it just needs time. Maybe just reduce the amount Hunwick has to do. He's only getting paid 1.2 mill., do you really expect him to play 23 minutes a night at a high level? That's what 4-6 million dollar players get paid to do.

Knock Hunwick off the PK as well. Rielly, Trouba, Polak and Marincin would be a pretty strong PK group. Zaitsev is pretty good in his own right as well. You could use Hunwick in case of emergencies really.

Hunwick with Zaitsev and playing not much more than 20 minutes would probably lead to him being a lot more successful. Zaitsev can still get his 23 minutes or whatever from all of the extra PP or PK time he'd get.

Right now, I just think Carrick needs some time out of the lineup. He makes quite a few risky pinches, and most of the time they don't work out. He's a wonderful puck handler and can shoot the puck and all of that, but we have Rielly, Gardiner (or Trouba can do it as well) and Zaitsev to do that. Heck even the other three guys in the lineup aren't terrible at it. He's not a dumpster fire in his own zone, but he's not exactly great there either. Also he has 65% offensive zone starts, so it's not like he has much time to look bad back there either. I think if the Leafs are going to improve, they need to have guys like Polak in the lineup more often. Yes don't use Polak in the crunch time situations, but when you need a strong PKer or a shutdown guy throughout the game, Polak is pretty damn effective. Carrick is not.

What?

This entire board has wanted Hunwick's head on a pike since halfway through preseason.
Compared to who? I'd argue that Gardiner is the one who gets hit the hardest despite being the best defenseman on the transition.

Hunwick, if anything, is viewed as a natural fixture on the top/mid-pairing. It's ridiculous.

did people really expect to go to Chicago and win? :s

Just lose the game from the drop of the puck. Stop teasing us with these late in the game leads.

It's frustrating being so close to a win, then, have the carpet pulled out from underneath us.

That was disappointing, but that was their best line tonight.

Bozak, Marner and van Riemsdyk are starting to build some chemistry.

2 lies ready, 2 lines struggling.

very disappointing. It's like his mind is else where. He should be afraid to lose and he's not. He wants to look picturesque. He's not in the same league as Matthews/Nylander. He has the skill but those guys wouldn't do ***** like that.

Leo's looked lost this year .. Before he was a pure heart and hustle guy who hit everything, and last year had a crazy good first half scoring .. Now it seems like he can't figure out if he wants to hit or be a scorer

Hope it's not the start of a decline for Uncle Leo - physical players can start declining around his age :(

He's just trying to keep up with the Mathews and Nylanders on this team. He just needs to play a simple game and stop looking for the fancy, picture perfect goals!

But yes to add some positivity, it appears Matthews and Nylander are future top tier players in the league for many years :) Both look dynamic out there
