Cody left AEW to get over in WWE.
Cody is been booked better in WWE than in AEW. He is basically the same character, but he does not live in his own Codyverse anymore.

The stipulation against Jerciho really did him in. He was on fire before that. Biggest babyface in the business. Went back to that status in WWE.

He is clearly not for everybody and he won't get the love from the smart fans, but he has his niche and he knows how to make it work. That being said, it has a certain shelf life, I think. People get tired of the conquering hero after a while. They got tired of Hogan, they got tired of Cena and, well, they always were tired of babyface Roman

Could have very well happened with Sami last year, but they directed the heat towards Roman and the Bloodline and it worked.

Could happened this year if they move away from LA Knight to reignite the Cody/Roman program.

If happened to Reigns because they put him in front of Danielson. It happened to Cena after a few title wins. It will happen to Cody once he completed the story. In that sense, Dusty was right, the money is in the chase. Cody got a 2-3 years story out of the chase. It will go downhill after he won the title.
I think Sami's storyline was always with Jey.

Nah. The story was with the entire Bloodline and the logical end to the story would have been Jey helping Sami against Roman in Montreal.

They did not do that because they had the Cody thing lined up for WM... and they did not pull the trigger there either... which I think they should have. The Bloodline story has since gone pretty stale, IMO.

Well yes, I thought Sami would be the one to take down BLloodline, thought not by defeating Roman, but causing division. And for a while it seemed to be the case. Just the other Usos to go...

Cody also for some reason has a brown nose gimmick, lol.

Guy just openly admits to running around to authority figures backstage asking for favors/for them to pull some strings.

Close, but it feels different to me. He left the WWE to get over in the WWE. I give him a lot of credit for it though. He bet on and reinvented himself and he's 2x the talent he was before.

I still don't like him

I think if they pulled the trigger on a Cody heel run in AEW, right after his unborn baby became the soon to be living embodiment of patriotism, a lot of the hate he gets now could've been avoided. He might still be wrestling on TNT

That's actually a very good point. The "baby that ended racism" promo was a big turning point regarding how people perceived Cody. The entire program with Anthony Ogogo was utter crap and Cody indeed never really recovered.

Shit I forgot about that lol. That really was such a fast downward spiral for him. I still can't believe they let that gimmick carry on for so long. It was abundantly clear that crowds were souring on him, and a heel turn would've elevated him again. It felt very much super cena.

Literally everybody does this there. "I just talked with Adam Pierce..."is the most commonly heard phrase on Raw.

Cody was the one that didn't want to do it. There was no one to pull the trigger that would be able to make Cody do it.

And that my guy, is where you are wrong. AEW is 100% WCW/TNA creative control situation.
Poor choice of words on my part. It may or may not be, that I don't know.

It definitely shouldn't be, and if it turns out that it was Cody's outright refusal to pivot to a heel run during that time, then I say f*** 'em and let him sit on the shelf to pout. Nobody should have that sort of control.

Assuming most (if not all) of the posters on here are adult males, are we really surprised that very few here are digging Cody Rhodes as he's being presented in WWE?

He's being marketed to kids. Vince saw the look, the pedigree, the history, the branding with the red/white/blue, the theme music, etc. and saw his next super-hero character he could sell a ton of merchandise to children with. No different than he did with Hogan in the 80s, or Bret in the 90s, Cena in the 2000s, or what he tried with Reigns in the 2010s before realizing Reigns was a natural heel. I'd argue Cody's current gimmick is a complete copy of Bret's face gimmick when he was champ. All we need is a kid down at the end of a deserted hallway screaming "Cody".

That's not meant to be a knock. Pro Wrestling recycles gimmicks all the time. But let's be honest about who Cody Rhodes is meant to appeal to, and it's sure not the denizens of HF Boards - Wrestling Forum.

Why didn't he get over in AEW? Well AEW is marketed towards the exact opposite audience that a character like Cody Rhodes would appeal to. AEW couldn't even lean into growing a female fanbase with Rhodes, given you can probably count the number of females that watch AEW on two hands.

Happy US Thanksgiving!

There's a couple reasons this seems to have worked with Cody where it didn't with Cena and Roman. (By didn't work I mean Cena had heavy resistance, but also made a shit ton of money... By all accounts he was a success overall)

1. AEW seems to have removed a lot of the "Counter audience" from WWE. The people who wanted to rage against the WWE machine now have something else to watch, so they're not really present and vocal anymore.

2. Cena and Roman were perceived as "Golden Boys" who were just handed everything immediately. Cody's story is pretty well known in that WWE saddled him with a shit gimmick and put a ceiling on him to the point that he had to leave and reinvent himself. It's a little harder not to respect his ascent compared to a guy like Cena or Roman.

Sounds like solid reasoning but the average viewer of WWE by age is still ancient.
