Confirmed Trade: [WSH/STL] Jordan Kyrou for Connor McMichael, Milton Gastrin, 2026 1st round pick (16th overall)

The rebuild ended 2 years ago brother. Where are you, even without Ovi they have 30 goal scorers in Aleksei Protas, Tom Wilson, and Jordan Kyrou. They have borderline 1Cs (more like high end 2Cs in Strome and PLD). They have a possible 30 goal scorer and possible 1C/almost guaranteed top 6er in Ilya Protas.

They have offensive firepower on the blue line in Chychryn and Hutson. They have 2 bonafide top 4 stay at home defenseman in Fehervary and Roy. And their goalie in LT.

They may be missing a piece or 2 but uh yeah, the rebuild probably won't happen for a while. And if a few years down the line they manage their assets well and any prospect wingers (Cristall, Paracek, Lakovic) pan out to their potential, they'll at the very least be consistently competitive to enter the playoffs on a yearly basis.
Caps have done great job rebuilding on the fly. This was another smart deal for them. I like it for blues bc it was time for kyrou to move on, but this likely works out quite well for caps.

I don't think either are elite assets. Kyrou is a 1st line player. McMichael isn't, but he's still a good player. Not sure why people have to crap on players just because they aren't stars.
I think a lot of it has to do with the general consensus of this thread that the players are equal (or some even seem to think McMichael is the best player in the deal) and Washington gave up a 1st and a B prospect and got fleeced. They're both NHL players but one is a middle sixer with a lone productive year, two years ago, and one is a first liner with multiple 70 point seasons. The so called fleecing is because, like always, people of HF overvalue picks and prospects and outside of their own teams have no concept of where most players actually are in their stages of development. I think it's less tearing McMichael down and more arguing the side this this trade is actually a lot closer than people are making it out to be.

Reasonable return for Kyrou. CMM is a solid player and the first is useful.

And yeah, Kyrou is a good player. Seems like people are overlooking why the Caps made this move.

Caps top 9 forwards look a lot better than they did this morning. Kyrou's contract not a concern if he hits 30 goals and no reason he can't. No sense worrying about giving up a middle six forward and 2 prospects. Bring Carlsson back and off you go.

I think the bridge is shattered with Carlson unfortunately so we need to do something on RD still but we should easily be a playoff team. Should have easily been one last year but injuries really derailed them.

We nearly made it with our 1C out due to injury for 2/3rds of the season...
We'll be adding 20 y/o top 6 center in Ilya Protas and 20 y/o top 4 defenseman in Cole Hutson to the roster full-time next season too.

You are also losing a major main piece. Even at 40 he still led your team in scoring. Dubois is a #1 center now?

Don't have confirmation that we're losing Ovechkin just yet. His ice time was heavily sheltered and caused tilted deployments for the rest of the team, which won't be the case if he's not back. Dubois has been a high end 2C for the past 2 seasons, him and Strome run as 1A/1B for the Caps. Adding Kyrou and the 2 rookies will more than make up for Ovechkin's offence even if he's not back.

Do you though? You missed with Ovy.
Had the same or more wins than 4 of the 16 teams that made the playoffs. Had an abysmal time securing any extra points in OT. Especially in the shootouts and were plagued with injuries. Losing your #1C for most of the season is rough ask Florida about that.

How well will either of them be without Ovy though? Replacing by committee is not really an improvement, especially when you missed this year, and Florida will be back in the race this year, some of the others have also improved. Strome only got good when joining Wsh, which I think is largely in part because of Ovy, no?

Not saying you can't do better, but just saying replacing a main HOF fame piece for nothing is a super hard thing to do. You can't just replace those level guys when nothing even close to that level comes back. I know, having watched greats like many of the Wings players retire, and then seeing the pieces in their places.

I just think with Ovy either retiring or only maybe coming back, it is time to rebuild.

You have a weirdly high opinion of a 40 year old Ovie, who is the only old guy on our roster.

Again like I said earlier, lots of people have zero clue what's going on outside of their own teams.
