Confirmed with Link: [WPG] Stastny (50% retained) for 2018 1st & Erik Foley

We better sign Foley. Getting a 1st and a 4th for Stastny isn't that appealing to me.
 
If we had decided that we aren't bringing Stastny back, then this deal does make sense. Particularly if we are going to make a move for someone like Hoffman today.

It just means that we're committed to going after Tavares in the summer, or making a trade if we don't get that done. If that is the thought process, I appreciate the aggressiveness from Armstrong. I means we're at least committed to going after being better rather than signing Stastny to continue plodding along.

We'll see how that works out.

Now if we could only ship out Berglund as well I'd be completely content. Lineup would be fine looking like this:

Steen - Parayko - Tarasenko
Schwartz - Schenn -Tage
Barbashev - Parayko - Jaskin/Sosh
Upshall - Brodz - Jaskin/ Sosh

Dreger just posted that he doesn't think Hoffman will be moved. Price too high.

Center depth just went from bad to worse. Getting a first this year is nice. If the plan really is to bank on Tavares that seems foolish at best.

I seen that tweet, and he might be right about Hoffman. If he is right about Smith then the Senators are insane. He is earning $3.25m for the next 3 seasons, has a partial NTC and is a 30 point player. He is a useful guy, but a rough start to next year and he's basically unmovable.
 
The 1st has a reasonable chance of being in the early 20s.

I'm not sure Foley has top 6 upside, but I like his overall game better than Sanford's. He could make for a strong 3rd liner. As far as prospects who get moved in these sorts of deals go, he's a pretty good one. We're benefiting from Winnipeg's drafting success and overall organizational depth.

Can't really ask for a better return for Stastny if you're going to trade him.

It'll be interesting to see how the Blues fill the hole they just created. Maybe there have already been preliminary talks about Stastny returning in the offseason, since it's hard to imagine that Winnipeg will be able to afford extending him. Maybe they have something else in mind. Either way, it's something to add to the to-do list.

I wonder if after the season is over if NYI knows they can't re-sign JT they would accept rights to Foley for the opportunity for us to talk to JT. That would be a great move imo. We can either save face and work back towards working on a deal with Stas or we can go full send on bringing JT in. Not sure if this is needed though as I don't understand how the rights to a UFA and talking to them works before the UFA signing period.
 
Foley has good stats with Providence College. Very good addition to our group of prospects. The 1st round pick is nice. I assume this trade will result in us keeping Sobotka since we need someone at center now.

Seems very strange at first glance, but I suppose it makes sense for the Jets to cover themselves for the 0.01% chance they miss the playoffs and win the lotto. :dunno:
