I'm not sure that this validates anything. If a competent GM actually paid a 1st for Monahan, sure. But Cheveldayoff is not really the poster child of competence.

I'll give MTL credit for taking advantage of a terrible GM though.
Chevy is far from being a terrible GM. Your ignorance is beaming. This post just shows how clueless you actually are.

Unless, as he has done twice already (Dach, Newhook), Hughes uses it to get an under-control young player...

Prime examples could be Alex Turcotte or Samuel Poulin as both Pittsburgh and Los Angeles should be considering restocking on some picks at some point.

Why wouldn't Pitt rather just play Sam Poulin? Lol.
Sometimes teams just give up on players, and would rather give up early enough to re-coup an asset for them, rather than wait another 3 years and perhaps lose them for nothing (while having invested a lot of developmental effort in them in the meantime).

For the very same reason they traded Dach and Newhook.

Teams may have too much depth and have other needs. We are the prime example of having a pile of NHL ready or soon to be ready defenseman that we must trade out. Meanwhile we are thin on top 6 potential forwards.

I kind of wish Money had been traded at the deadline. I was afraid that his departure would signal to the rest of the team that management gave up on the rest of the season. I was expecting a progression but not the playoffs this year, but it was still good hockey. The media in Montreal picked up on it very fast too, so the reporting till the end of the season is bound to be very negative.

1) Jets got a good player

Monahan is better than what the fans of this site thinks he is (outside of Habs and some flames fans). He can still produce many points. Habs fans and players are sad to see him go.

2) Most of HF was wrong since October

There has been many threads on the value of Monahan and in everyone most of other fanbases didn't take Habs fans seriously when we said we'd get a 1st. And that was as early as october.

Let us have our small victory through this tough rebuild.

3) Hughes has to be considered a good GM now

HIs handling of Monahan from taking advantage of the Flames situation to re-signing him cheap to get a second 1st is great GMing. I also like the fact that he trades his late 1sts/2nds to get some young good players (Dach, Newhook).
The rebuilds seems to follow a trend where there is a fire sale that can span a few seasons, where teams also pick up picks through other creative means (taking on a big contract, etc). Laval is already seeing a progression, and we have a few players coming up that are very promising. Montreal is pretty much at the place where we have more assets than we can handle; more players than contracts and we have something like 23 picks in the next few drafts.

This is where it gets really exciting for me, when the team has to consolidate assets to fit under that contract limit, either by selling quantity for quality or by turning picks into prospects.

The Habs are tied for 13th in points in the Eastern Conference. Unless they can pull off a streak like the Oilers (and there's no reason to believe they could), Montreal will not make the playoffs. Why would management take a risk of possible injury waiting to trade Monahan when they had received an acceptable offer?

Well as stated, i have no delusions about the habs making the playoffs; my prediction sat at 82 points (.500), which i would see as a logical and positive progression from last season's 68pts.

My point is that they are playing like they believe in it, which is exactly what I want to see. They know the predictions and they wish to "prove everybody wrong".

A message like Money or later Savard being traded reads like "management doesnt believe in us, they gave up on the season already". I mean even without mentionning talent and leadership and all that Money brings, after the injufries Dvo, Dach and Newhook and now with Money being traded, the team sees Suzuki as 1C and then looks over at friggin Jake Evans as the #2. Newhook's imminent inspires a little more confidence, though.

Even the media in Montreal (RDS 5 à 7 yesterday at least) picked up on this aspect, which makes me wonder if even the coverage is going to go from "impatient optimism" to "downright negativity".

You must think the players on the roster are complete morons.

These guys are fully aware of where the Canadiens are in their rebuild and to a man, everyone on that roster knew the day Sean Monahan was signed that, unless he was injured, he was a guarantee to be traded.

All this trade did was open up another spot for another player to step up and prove themselves. That's exactly what the team should be doing at this stage. The notion that the players are going to have hurt feelings cause the team "doesn't believe in them" is absolutely absurd. These aren't children, they are professional athletes, They get it.

I would rather we kept Monahan. Play these last 33 games meaningful. Be better for player development than what we will get with late first. Monahan was good influence on Slaf and other young players.

If he signed i would absolutely ageee.

My hockey senses tells me that Monahan wants big money and big term to close his career so i expect that he will play lights out for the Jets.

My value and i suspect Hughes value was a 4x4 or 4x5 contract, which Monahan probably turned down.

The offer is probably available post season but if he's a big cobtributor to the Jets some dumb GM will give him much more and much longer.

Another thing...he took a low 1 year contract to play for us. It would ne part of the long term strategy that he gets trsded to a contender and prove his worth for the next contract. He's a smart man so this is not some random event.

Bottom line, a late first is not worth much but it's better then losing him for nothing post season. 33 games is not worth losing a late 1st for us....so the trade makes sense.

That late 1st may also mean we drop in the standings making our pick top 5 or lower. That's the other part of the deal that some overlook. Another young player will now get a chance at that player development you mentioned.

You hear what Slaf had to say about Monahan? Monahan preparing himself for a game helped Slaf a lot. Slaf will remember that rest of his career. Monahan a class act, hard to find at that level. Probably going to costs us couple good prospects not developed properly. The late first is weak and most we can move up is to 5.

Impressed with Monahan in my first viewing of him as a Jet

He appeared to resemble Habs fans opinion of him much more than my chart-watching, hand-wringing fellow Jets fans opinions

Could it be that Habs fans were right AGAIN? Twice in one week?

Tabarnak....
Was about to post here to ask how he was doing.

Glad to hear, keep us updated!

Typically fans who watch players play have more informed opinions. Most posters are lying when they say they watch players on other teams play regularly.

Nah, you gotta look at some red rectangles instead of watching him for his entire tenure as a Hab

If use Monahan right should be good player. Can play all 3 zones. Good on faceoffs, chip in 55 points. I think Montreal wanted to keep him but rumours were he wanted big career final contract.

What a ridiculous thing to say.

Why would "most posters" lie about watching other teams regularly?

What would the point be of that? Plenty of people pay for a package to get all the games and they watch a game or two every night. This is not a highly unusual thing, at all.
