Would YOU move Carlo for Landeskog?

My hope would be keep Carlo and hope he can be like a Hjalmarsson - a 2nd pairing anchor for a long time. Then hope that McAvoy becomes our top pairing stud, a lot riding on two players though.

Are we overvaluing Carlo? He's been a great surprise, but it's a small sample and he's faded off of late. He also has the Chara effect helping him.

I think there's a little of that going on, yes.

Not necessarily the Chara factor but the age factor. We tend to go ga-ga over kids who step in at a young age and expect that they'll get better every year until they're dominating. I see folks throwing out names like Pietrangelo and IMHO Carlo doesn't have that kind of upside.

Remember Kyle McLaren?

There are lots of players who can play effective at 19/20 but don't really evolve as the years go on. Marc-Edouard Vlasic is another one. He came into the NHL 10 years ago, at 19/20 and played top minutes and put up 26 points and all that was damn impressive. But those 26 points were his second best point total until last year. He is what he's always been, and that's a very, very solid defenseman, but not on Pietrangelo's level value wise. I think that's the better comp for Carlo.

There's also the Bruins defense situation- Carlo, whatever his ultimate upside turns out to be, made our defense significantly better over what we had coming out of last season. In a straight up player for player equation, I would take Landeskog every time, but Carlo's value to us has been more than what his potential talent may end up being.

Exactly. And his value to us is even bigger considering the big gaping hole that the (not too distant) retirement of Chara will create. Carlo is much less proven than Landy, so it's a risk to not make the trade, but a risk we have to make.

To me anyway I feel Carlo is already more valuable to the Bruins then Landeskog. Only player on the Avs I even think of dealing Carlo for would be McKinnon, other than that no way. McAvoy is simply not available.

That's it right there. He's the surprising band aid to the roster this year that they can't live without.

It's too bad that their inability to address the defense in a real way for the present now has them (or maybe us) unwilling to make a deal for a greater talent at forward.

I agree with this.

What you're forgetting though, is we have a draft every year to keep stocking the system. 7 months from now we could have another 1st round defender in the pipeline.

I really think we shoudl just stay the course and see what happens. Carlo won't be a UFA for 6(?) years and the rest of the 2015 draft will be vying for a spot on the roster in the next couple years.

I second this. I know Landy isn't necessarily a short term move, but I would still prefer to keep Carlo, McAvoy, Debrusk, JFK, Zboril, Lindgren etc. and see how a couple of them pan out, at least until next year to see which of these guys challenge for a spot.

Of course if we can get Landy without giving up Carlo or McAvoy, I say go for it.

Wait them out. Nobody is going to pay their asking price. If they do, then suffer the fools. I get that Colorado is not in a good spot, but why in heck would we want to take on a youngster that they apparently are giving up on.

Get the distinct feeling from SN Friedman's article they have closed that door. His quote below, which was also posted in the Bruins transitions thread, suggests so. Seems appropriate to also include it here.

11. Boston kiboshed a potential Landeskog deal when the Avalanche insisted on Brandon Carlo, who is from Colorado Springs. I don’t think it was a one-for-one, but part of a bigger deal. That is believed to be the second time this season the Bruins have said no to Carlo’s inclusion. The first was Winnipeg, in a package for Jacob Trouba. It’s clear he’s making a major impression in Beantown. Boston suddenly is flush with young defensive prospects.

I think the real question here is should the Bruins trade Carlo or Mcavoy for a Landeskog type player or a package and as much as I want to say no i think they have to do something.

Let's face it our "core" with the exception of Pastrnak is getting up there in age and is losing a step or two. So if we're not going for it in the next 2-3 years what are we doing?? Why did we sign Backes at 32 years of age to "rebuild". Why are we hanging on to Chara (provided he would waive) why are we paying a goalie 7 million to steal us games to get 9th seed in the conference (provided he'd waive to)

The reality is if you want to add a good NHL caliber player you have to give up a good young asset. Who knows what Mcavoy will be in 3-5 years or what Carlo will be in 2-3 years but if this team wants to compete soon assets have to be given up whether its right or wrong.

Obviously with our core players a lot of them hold their rights and have said they have no interest in waiving their NTC which makes re-building hard. So do we go for it?? I hate to burst a lot of bubbles here but Mcavoy is not coming in next year logging 25 minutes and taking us to the promise land.

This is where my confidence in Sweeney really drops. Can he make the right hockey trades to make this team much better in the next little bit... only time will tell and what is the plan here exactly?? It's seems to me like Boston has been stuck in Limbo for 2 years on the directions they want to go in

Carlo to Hjalmarsson comparisons are on point... Carlo plays with a little more edge in addition

No way I would do this trade. I can offer louzan, lindgren, debrusk instead

however what if Colorado offered Matt Duchene for a package including Carlo?

that would be a tough one

Yep. Fair point.

Keep the bun in the oven. This kid has more hockey IQ than McLaren had. That was McLarens downfall. 10 cent head...You watch Carlo last night with no panic, cover/protect the puck along the boards, absorb a hit and then fire the puck out on the PK. There was no rookie jitters there. Just an intelligent play. Could this be his ceiling? Possible, but I rather find that out with him here than watch him turn into something special somewhere else.

Z was played pretty good at the world event...

has played well this season in general.. no confidence in him? Or feel good that we have enough young D resources to make a trade like this?

I like McLaren but this kid is much better skater, decision maker, and looks overall more polished

Vlasic is a heck of a player to get that would be a homerun

Just to add

Carlo is going to be an elite defender- like when Seidenberg was at the top of his game

He will be a second pair monster who can play final minutes of periods and close out games while killing penalties

A Krug-Carlo second pair as early as next season could be the start of an elite duo
