Would you be fine with a World Cup Instead?

The tittle is world cup,no? Not euro/Scandinavian ect ect.

Great - so we can have it over in Europe with international ice, referees and rules? Why not then, lots fairer than the late Canada Cup. I'm not a fan of the country, but, boy how the Soviet Union was robbed back in 1987...

Olympics ainec.

Nothing in international sports compares to an Olympic gold medal. It is iconic.

When you are 80 years old would you rather tell your grandkids about the time you won an Olympic Medal or how you won the world cup? Without hockey the closest thing the Winter Olympics have to a premier event is the massively corrupt figure skating. Even though this tournament sucked, you can't argue with how great the 2010 Olympics were.

I think its fundamentally wrong that pros attend. Same applies to NBA players in the summer imo

Honestly, its about time the IIHF started to think more like the NHL.

Like the owners? That self-serving bunch of soulless money grabbers? As little as the IIHF does any actual thinking at least it hasn't started thinking like the NHL...

This is why unified rules should be a priority for everyone in the sport

2014: Winter Olympic

2016: World Cup
2017: All-Star Game
2018: Winter Olympics

etc.

The history of an Olympic medal or winning a World Cup trophy. It's only about winning as this Erik Karlsson comment will attest to.

Sorry if I'm late. Erik Karlsson, on what the silver medal is worth to him (via Olympic News): "You will see when I put it out on eBay."

You are kiddy with all this unfair crying ain't ya?

The other "world cup" has been played in North America how many times?

Yeah, "World Cup" changed from Canada Cup just to make it sound "fair" even though nothing changed. So if it is a "World" Cup - why should it be played by NHL-rules, NHL-refs and in NA with NA-size rinks?
What a big troll you are.

You do realize the WC of soccer is in their off season right? Do you think those guys show up there fat and out of shape?

You do realize that the WC in soccer is just 2 to 4 weaks after the season ends, depending on what league you are playing in? That means that the players are in top shape and most of them go straight to national training camp for a week or two.

Most teams in the big leagues end their season in the third week or last week in May. From that time they might be given a couple of days of and then it's off to the national teams and a couple of games before the World Cup starts in the second week of June.

World Cup is like Euro Hockey Tour played in Europe. Nice to watch but nobody gives a s***.

There are unified rules. To be honest, I don't think it's this NA vs Europe thing that is slowing down the growth of hockey. The competition is just so hard in both areas, we have soccer and scores of other sports, you have the big American sports leagues.

I don't want to start a flame war but this is a serious question for our Euro friends:

If the rules were to be unified what International rules would you adamant about keeping and why?

I want to keep the Olympics, but I also want The World Cup back!

Toss the World Championship instead, no fun to watch in april/may with the backup team of every country.

The World Cup would need years to establish itself properly just like the WC of Football needed. I would personally have no problem having it in Europe for the record.

NHL will be creating leagues in Europe soon any ways. I think they are about to take the fight to the IIHF who, in my opinion, have not done enough to foster the sport in winter countries.

In Olympic years, there should be no World Juniors and let them mingle with a set amount of over 20 aged players similar to how FIFA does it

Playing in World Cup doesn't mean as much as playing in the Olympic games. Olympic games are followed by much more people around the world than World Cup, which is followed only by people that care about ice hockey. Therefor it is also better for the future of ice hockey.

As a North American, the Euros can keep all of the international rules as long as the games are played on smaller ice.
This tournament was boring as ****.

Just rotate locations each time.
North America in 2016
Europe in 2020
etc.

I'd love to see a format where it would go like: 2014 Olympics, 2015 World Championships, 2016 World Cup, 2017 World Championships, 2018 Olympics and so on. Would give the world championships tournament a little more meaning only being every other year as a filler in between the best of the best tournaments.
